The suffocating tension between us shattered as the shrill, deafening blare of the packhouse alarm echoed down the subterranean corridors. The heavy iron bell, reserved only for a full-scale invasion, clanged with a frantic urgency that made my teeth ache. Following the alarm, the unmistakable thunder of dozens of heavy combat boots reverberated against the stone floor. Silas’s elite guards—the very men who took perverse pleasure in kicking me into the dirt when they passed me in the halls—were swarming the dungeon. "They're coming," I choked out, pure panic finally breaking through his mesmerizing Alpha aura. "They have silver nets. They have concentrated wolfsbane dart guns. You have to run—" I didn't even get to finish the sentence. Kaelen didn't look toward the corridor where the shouts were multiplying. He didn't tense, nor did a single flicker of fear cross his chaotic, glowing eyes. Instead, his gaze remained fixed solely on me, his irises burning with a dark, territorial possessiveness that defied logic. "Let them come," he murmured, his voice a dark, velvety rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. Before my exhausted brain could process his words, the world tilted violently. Kaelen’s massive left arm swept around my waist, lifting me off the ground as easily as if I weighed nothing more than a handful of feathers. He pulled me flush against his hard, burning side, tucking my head securely beneath his chin. "Bury your face in my chest, little wolf," he commanded softly, his breath fanning my ear. "And do not look back." The heavy oak door at the end of the hall exploded inward. A dozen of Silvermane's most lethal warriors flooded the corridor, armed to the teeth with silver-tipped spears and heavy crossbows. For a fraction of a second, they froze, their eyes widening in absolute horror as they took in the sight of the Mad King—fully healed, fully unbound, and radiating a catastrophic killing intent that made the air itself crackle with static electricity. "Fire!" the captain shrieked, his voice pitching high with terror. "Bring him down!" A volley of silver-tipped bolts hissed through the air. I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the agonizing sting of silver tearing through my flesh. I was a slave; in any other situation, I would have been used as a convenient meat shield. But the pain never came. Kaelen didn't dodge. He simply shifted his stance, turning his massive torso to completely shield my small frame from the barrage. The bolts struck his back and shoulders, but without the wolfsbane poisoning his system, the silver barely penetrated his incredibly dense Alpha muscle. He barely even registered the impact. A low, vibrating snarl ripped from his throat—a sound of pure, ancient violence. Holding me securely against his side with one arm, Kaelen lunged forward into the sea of heavily armed warriors. What followed was not a battle. It was a massacre. With his free right hand, the Mad King unleashed absolute devastation. I kept my face pressed against the warmth of his chest, but I couldn't block out the sounds. The sickening crunch of shattering bone, the metallic shriek of steel weapons being snapped in half by bare hands, and the desperate, gurgling cries of the men who had tormented me for years. A guard lunged at us with a jagged silver sword, aiming directly for me. Kaelen’s arm tightened around my waist, pulling me a millimeter out of harm's way while his right hand shot out like a striking viper. He caught the guard by the throat, hoisting the fully grown man off the floor with effortless, terrifying strength. With a flick of his wrist, he threw the guard into the opposite stone wall. The wall cracked. The man did not get up. Blood splattered across the stone, painting the dungeon in a macabre display of violence. Yet, miraculously, not a single drop touched me. Kaelen moved with the terrifying, fluid grace of a lethal apex predator, a whirlwind of death and destruction. But the space I occupied within his arm was the eye of the storm—perfectly still, perfectly untouched, and flawlessly protected. It was a jarring, mind-bending paradox. The most ruthless, bloodthirsty Alpha in the continent was currently massacring my pack, yet as he held me, his grip was so careful, so profoundly gentle, as if he were carrying a fragile glass sculpture through a hurricane. A strange, foreign warmth bloomed in the center of my chest, completely eclipsing my terror. *Safety.* For the first time in nineteen years, surrounded by absolute carnage, I felt entirely untouchable. "Stop him!" a familiar, arrogant voice roared from the top of the dungeon stairs. Silas. My brother stood at the landing, flanked by twenty more guards, his handsome face contorted in disbelief and rage as he surveyed his decimated elite squad. His eyes darted from the mountain of bodies to Kaelen, and finally, to the small, dirt-streaked girl tucked fiercely against the Mad King's side. "The slave?" Silas spat, his face flushing crimson with insult. "You tore through my dungeon for a useless, wolf-less spare? Kill them both! Don't let him reach the surface!" At the sound of Silas’s voice calling me a slave, a terrifying stillness fell over Kaelen. The slaughter momentarily ceased. The Mad King slowly lifted his head, locking eyes with my brother. The temperature in the corridor instantly dropped to freezing. Kaelen’s eyes flared to a blinding, demonic red. The sheer weight of his killing intent was so heavy it actually made the stone walls groan under the pressure. "She is mine," Kaelen’s voice boomed, a demonic, dual-toned roar that shook the dust from the ceiling. "And if you ever speak of my mate with that filthy mouth again, I will tear your spine from your body." *Mate?* My heart stopped. My breath hitched. Did he just say... *mate?* Before Silas or I could process the apocalyptic revelation, Kaelen moved. He didn't bother fighting through the reinforcements on the stairs. Instead, he tightened his hold on me, bent his knees, and launched himself directly upward. With a deafening explosion of stone and mortar, Kaelen punched straight through the reinforced ceiling of the dungeon. Debris rained down around us as we burst through the floor of the packhouse courtyard, directly under the light of the silvery moon. The night air hit my lungs, sharp and freezing, but the furnace-like heat of his body kept me warm. Alarms wailed across the entire Silvermane territory. Hundreds of warriors were shifting, their howls tearing through the night as they converged on the courtyard. But Kaelen didn't hesitate. Without a backward glance at the chaos he had wrought, the Mad King bounded into the dense, dark forest, carrying me away from the only hell I had ever known, and straight into the terrifying unknown of his absolute, unyielding obsession.
