📖 The Sovereign’s Ledger
Chapter 1: Blood in the Abyss
Three days.
That was all that stood between me and freedom. Three days until the full moon, when the pack's elite warriors would be completely consumed by the shifting frenzy, leaving the southern borders unguarded. I had the map memorized. I had a stolen dagger hidden in the sole of my left boot.
But right now, my reality was the freezing, damp stone of the Silvermane Pack’s subterranean dungeon.
The air down here was thick, suffocatingly heavy with the metallic tang of dried blood, festering wounds, and the sharp, acidic sting of wolfsbane. I knelt on the unforgiving jagged floor, my knees long since bruised a mottled purple and black. My trembling hands gripped a coarse brush, furiously scrubbing at the dark stains that coated the cobblestones.
I was Elara. To the outside world, I was a ghost. To the Silvermane pack, I was the ultimate disgrace—a pureblood daughter born without a wolf, a "trash" omega who couldn't even summon a single fang.
My brother, Silas, the golden boy and "perfect heir" to the Alpha title, made sure I never forgot my place. He was the one who had demoted me to a slave. He was the one who left the crisscrossing silver scars on my back whenever he felt the pressure of leadership. Everyone praised Silas’s miraculous, overwhelming strength, blind to the fact that I was the one paying the price for it. Lately, just being near him made me feel as though my very life force was being siphoned away from my veins.
*Just three more days,* I chanted internally, burying the agonizing pain in my ribs as I dragged the heavy wooden bucket of murky water to the next bloodstain.
But this cell was different from the others.
I paused, my breath catching in my throat as I dared to lift my gaze. Suspended in the center of the cavernous room was a nightmare made flesh.
He was the Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack. The Mad King. Our deadliest, most ruthless enemy.
Silas had dragged him in three nights ago after a coward's ambush, utilizing a hundred warriors and traps laced with enough concentrated wolfsbane to kill a small army. For three days, Silas had tortured him, trying to break the rival Alpha and force a submission that would grant our pack ultimate dominance.
Yet, the Mad King had not uttered a single scream.
He hung by massive, rune-carved silver chains that bound his wrists and ankles, pulling his massive frame taut. His chest was a canvas of deep, gruesome lacerations that refused to heal—a testament to the lethal dosage of poison in his system. Thick black veins spider-webbed up his neck, a clear sign that the wolfsbane had reached his heart. His head hung low, a curtain of matted, sweat-drenched obsidian hair obscuring his face.
He was dying. Anyone could see that. The sheer, overwhelming dominance that usually radiated from him had dwindled to a faint, erratic pulse.
"Scrub faster, you useless bitch!" a guard snarled from the other side of the iron bars, slamming his baton against the metal. "The Alpha Heir wants this cell pristine before he comes down for the final execution tonight."
I flinched, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my bruised ribs. "Yes," I rasped, my voice hoarse from disuse.
I scrambled forward, grabbing the heavy wooden bucket to drag it closer to the prisoner's suspended form. But my body, severely malnourished and pushed to the absolute brink of exhaustion, finally betrayed me.
My wet boot found a slick patch of fresh blood.
My ankle gave way with a sickening pop. I lunged forward, desperately trying to catch myself, but my hands slammed into the scattered, shattered fragments of a silver torture instrument left discarded on the floor. A jagged piece of metal sliced deep into the palm of my right hand.
I gasped, a sharp cry escaping my lips as the bucket tipped over, sending freezing, filthy water washing over the dungeon floor.
But that wasn't the disaster.
The disaster was where my hand had landed. I had fallen right at the Mad King's feet. As I pushed myself up, trembling violently, a single, heavy drop of my blood welled from the deep gash in my palm.
Time seemed to slow to a terrifying crawl.
The crimson droplet fell through the damp, cold air. It didn't hit the stone. Instead, it landed squarely on the cracked, pale, and bloodless lips of the dying Alpha King just inches beneath my hand.
For a fraction of a second, nothing happened. I scrambled backward, clutching my bleeding hand to my chest, my breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. I waited for the guard to shout, for the punishment to begin.
Then, the dungeon completely changed.
The drop of my blood seeped past his lips. Instantly, an unnatural, golden-white luminescence flared beneath Kaelen’s skin. It was faint at first, then blinding. The black, poisoned veins traversing his neck abruptly halted, then began to aggressively recede, shrinking back from his heart as if burned away by holy fire. The catastrophic wounds on his chest began to knit together at a speed that defied all logic, the torn flesh weaving itself shut in seconds.
The ambient temperature in the dungeon plummeted, yet the air grew thick, dense, and impossibly suffocating. It felt as though a mountain had just been dropped into the enclosed space.
The Mad King wasn't dying anymore.
A low, guttural growl vibrated from his chest—a sound so primal, so terrifyingly dominant, that my knees buckled entirely. The instinct of a predator awakening sent shockwaves of pure, unadulterated terror straight into my bone marrow.
*Crack.*
The sound of the impenetrable, rune-carved silver chains straining echoed like a gunshot.
Then, he lifted his head.
His eyes snapped open. They were not the dull, glazed eyes of a dying wolf. They were a violent, swirling vortex of crimson and gold, glowing with a deranged, possessive hunger in the darkness. Those terrifying eyes instantly locked onto me, pinning me in place like a rabbit caught in the jaws of a behemoth.
Every single alarm bell in my head screamed at me to run, to flee, to implement my escape plan right this second. But my limbs were paralyzed by his sheer, crushing Alpha aura.
*Crack. SNAP.*
One of the massive silver chains anchoring his left arm violently shattered into a dozen pieces, exploding outward.
Distance to the full moon escape plan was three days. But as the deadliest beast in the world tore his arm free from his impenetrable restraints, his crimson eyes burning into my soul, I realized with suffocating dread that my escape plan had just been permanently canceled.
I hadn't just awoken the Mad King.
I had inadvertently given him a taste of my blood. And by the look in his eyes, he was going to tear this entire dungeon apart just to get more.
