The council chamber had been rearranged. They had moved the long oak table to the wall and placed three standing mirrors in its place, each framed in a different metal: iron, silver, and gold. Nora stood in the center of the room with Hope asleep against her chest, the baby's breath warm and even against her collarbone. The mirrors reflected nothing but the stone behind them. Elias stood by the iron frame. "The birth name holds her to the lineage of the mother. Hope Ashford binds her to blood debt, pack history, and the mortal limit of your family line." Darius stood near the silver mirror, his arms crossed, his jaw tight. He had not spoken since they entered. His presence was the only thing that kept Nora from carrying Hope back to the nursery and locking every door. "The cult name holds her to Seraphine's patron," Elias continued. He touched the silver frame. "Winter's child. The name the map already knows. If you speak it aloud, she claims the immortal inheritance by right of blood and mark." Nora's arms tightened around her daughter. "And the third?" Elias moved to the gold mirror. "The crown name. The one the northern packs whisper when they think no one is listening. The name that makes her a queen before she can walk." "Which is?" Nora's voice stayed flat. "I won't speak it. Neither would you if you knew what it cost the last woman who carried it." Hope stirred against Nora's chest, her small fist curling against the fabric of Nora's shirt. The room felt smaller than it had a moment ago. The mirrors stood silent, waiting for a word. Darius stepped forward. "You don't have to choose any of them." "I know." Nora looked at the three reflections. Herself in iron. Herself in silver. Herself in gold. Each one held her hostage to a different future, each one demanded a piece of her daughter that did not belong to anyone but Hope. She turned her back on all three. "Her name is not inheritance. It's not a throne. It's not a weapon." Nora pressed her lips to Hope's forehead and breathed in the warm scent of her skin. "She doesn't owe the world a single thing she didn't choose to give." Elias's eyes narrowed. "Then what do you name her?" Nora looked past the mirrors, past the council chamber, past the walls of Frosthold that held centuries of dead women's promises. She thought of the grave slab beneath her feet and the names carved into black stone. She thought of the mothers who had written their daughters' futures in blood because they had no other ink. "Hope has only one name she carries by right," Nora said. "And it's not Ashford. It's not the cult name. It's not whatever the packs want to crown her with." She lifted her chin. "She is Hope No-Name. No lineage. No throne. No debt. She belongs to herself until the day she chooses otherwise." The mirrors cracked in unison. The iron split from top to bottom with a sound like a tree breaking in deep frost. The silver shattered inward, spraying shards across the stone floor. The gold did not break cleanly--it spiderwebbed from corner to corner, the frame groaning, the glass falling in sheets that caught the torchlight and scattered it across the room like falling stars. Elias stumbled backward, his hand pressed to his chest. "You--" Darius caught Nora by the elbow and pulled her away from the falling glass. His hand was warm, steady, and his eyes held hers as the last of the silver clattered to the floor. "Are you hurt?" She shook her head. Hope had not woken. The mirrors lay in pieces around them, and in every shard, Nora saw only her own reflection, unbroken, unchanged, finally free of every name that had been waiting to claim her daughter.
