📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 73: Mara's Sin
The tent canvas had been staked tight, but cold still seeped through the seams. Nora sat on the folded blanket, ledger open across her knees, her finger tracing the entry for Mara Ashford. *Buyer: Mara Ashford. Purpose: Life-claim transfer. Price: One naming right.*
She had read it thirty times since camp. Each time she hoped the words would rearrange into something forgivable.
Darius sat across the tent, back against the pole, eyes on her face. He had not spoken in an hour. His patience was a held breath.
"She didn't tell me," Nora said. Her voice came out flat. "She spent my whole life teaching me to read ledgers, to spot false entries. And she never mentioned she owed Seraphine a naming right."
Darius shifted. "A naming right over what?"
"Over any Ashford woman's firstborn." Nora looked up. Her eyes were dry, but her throat ached. "It's a loophole in the mother-debt system. Seraphine doesn't need to take Hope by force. She just needs the name my mother promised her."
The coals glowed low beneath ash. Darius leaned forward. "Did Mara know what she signed?"
"I don't know." Nora closed the ledger. "The entry says the child was dying. A council raid, bad lungs. Mara was a healer. She probably thought she saved a life. But Seraphine always hides a clause."
"And the child?"
"Lived." Her voice cracked. "I don't know who. Mara's naming right is still active. Seraphine has been waiting for me to give birth so she could call in the debt. My own mother wrote the contract."
The silence bent the tent walls. Wind scraped the frozen ground outside. From the next tent came Maeve's low humming to Hope. Sounds of a life Nora had built. A protection circle with a hole at its center, and the hole had her mother's handwriting.
Darius rose, crossed the space, knelt in front of her. His hands pressed hers on the ledger. "You can't carry this alone."
"I'm not alone." She looked at him. "But if I tell the council what Mara did, they'll strip Frosthold's founding charter. They'll call the whole sanctuary a fraud. Everything we built will be tainted by a debt she signed twenty years ago."
"And if you don't?"
"Then Hope is still at risk, and I'm no better than the elders who hid the ledger books." She touched his cheek. His stubble scraped her palm. "I thought I knew who my mother was. Now I have to decide whether to expose her truth or bury it to protect what we have."
Darius turned his head and pressed a kiss to her wrist. "You don't have to decide tonight."
"I don't have forever."
He rose, pulling her with him. The ledger slid to the blanket. He cupped her face and kissed her--slow, deliberate, asking permission. She melted into him, fingers curling into his coat collar, body pressing against his warmth. For a moment the weight lifted. There was only his mouth, his hands, the drum of his heart.
When he pulled back, his forehead rested against hers. "Whatever you choose, I'll stand beside you. Even if it means losing Frosthold."
She closed her eyes. The words settled into her chest like stones.
*Even if it means losing everything.*
She did not know yet if she could let her mother's memory burn to save her daughter's future. But the question lay spread open on the blanket, and the answer would come before the sun rose.
Nora drew a breath and reached for the ledger.
