📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 72: The Ledger of Unborn Heirs
The tent canvas snapped against the wind as Nora spread the ledger across the crate they had turned into a table. The fire pit outside had been extinguished at dusk. No flame. No smoke. Nothing that could be tracked.
The book was bound in leather treated to feel slick and cold. No title on the spine. No mark on the front. The pages were crisp and yellowed, the handwriting shifting every few entries--different hands, different decades, one consistent purpose.
*Heir trade. Fertility transfer. Blood settlement.*
The first page listed a girl from Thornveil, sold to Silver Creek Pack for grazing rights. The next listed a boy from the same village, traded for timber access. Nora's fingers moved down the columns. Names. Ages. Prices.
*Mira, age four. Coral, age two. Jonas, newborn.*
She turned the page. Then another. The dates went back sixty years. Eighty. A hundred and twelve. The handwriting thickened as the pages moved forward, as if the record keepers had stopped pretending.
Children purchased under *fertility contract*.
The phrase appeared fifty-three times before Nora stopped counting. A mother who could not conceive would buy a child from a packless woman, claim the child as a *moon miracle*, and alter pack records to show a legitimate heir. The purchased child was the lie made flesh.
And the mothers who sold--listed too. Paid in gold. Paid in sanctuary. Paid in silence.
Darius stood at the tent entrance, his back to the canvas, arms crossed. He had not looked at the ledger. But his jaw tightened every time Nora's breath caught.
She needed him there, even if he could not shield her from what she was reading.
The final pages were the most recent. Twenty years. Fifteen. Ten.
Nora's hand stopped on an entry dated sixteen years ago.
*Buyer: Mara Ashford, Frosthold healer.*
*Acquisition: Female infant, unnamed, from the Thornveil border clearance.*
*Purpose: Fertility cover. Child died in transit.*
The pen had scratched through the last line. Someone had tried to erase it, then given up.
Nora read the entry again. Her mother's name. Mara Ashford. The woman who had raised her, taught her herb lore and healing salves and how to read a contract before signing it.
She pressed her palm flat against the page. The ink did not smear. The name did not change.
*Buyer: Mara Ashford.*
Darius moved. She heard his boot scrape the frozen earth, felt his heat step close behind her. He did not look over her shoulder. He waited.
"I have to verify this," Nora said. Her voice came out steady. She did not know how.
"Then we verify it."
"There are witnesses still alive. Frosthold records. The border clearance logs." She closed the ledger. The leather creaked under her fingers. "If my mother bought a child, there will be a trail."
"And if the trail leads back to you?"
Nora looked at the closed book in her hands. At the generations of women who had sold their children for survival and the generations who had bought them for lies.
"Then I follow it anyway."
She turned. Darius stood close enough that she felt the cold radiating off his coat, the warmth of his breath.
"You don't have to carry this alone."
"I know." She looked up at him. "But I have to decide what to do with it. That part is mine."
He reached out, slow, and pressed his hand to the side of her face. His palm was cold. His fingers were steady.
"Then decide," he said. "I'll be here when you do."
Nora leaned into his hand for one breath. Two. Then she pulled away, tucked the ledger under her arm, and walked out into the dark.
She stopped at the edge of the hollow. The sky was black and starless. The weight of the book pressed against her ribs like a second heartbeat.
*Buyer: Mara Ashford.*
Her mother. The healer. The woman whose memory she had built her revenge around.
And the unborn child in the ledger was never named.
