Chapter 63: Darius Without a Crown

The great hall of Thorn's End sat in a hollow where the sun never fully reached, its stone walls sweating ice even in the dry season. Nora felt the cold through her boots before she crossed the threshold. Forty southern pack wolves watched from the shadows between torches. Darius walked at her shoulder. He wore no crown. No Frosthold sigil marked his cloak. The silver torc and heavy fur mantle had stayed in the carriage. He looked like a northern trader with dangerous eyes--exactly what they had agreed. Three days ago, she had made that choice. Enter as King, they'd ask him for things. Carry the child, they'd ask her what she wanted. Darius had pulled the torc from his own throat, setting it on the table like a weapon he chose not to carry. The hall's elder sat on a raised bench--a woman named Margrave Holt, her face carrying the same hollow Nora had seen in every village mother. She did not stand. Did not offer water. "You bring the Lycan King without heraldry," Margrave said. "Respect or insult?" Nora shifted Hope higher on her chest. The baby watched the torchlight with unnerving stillness. "I brought a northern ally who stripped his title so this conversation could happen between mothers, not thrones." A southern wolf laughed. "She thinks she's a mother. Refugee with a bastard mark." Darius moved. He did not shift or draw. He simply stepped forward, and the temperature dropped so sharply that frost crackled across the stone from his boot to the laughing wolf's feet. The laughter died. "Your hall," Darius said quietly. "Your rules. But the woman beside me is not required to tolerate disrespect while I can still hear it." Margrave Holt's eyes flicked to him, then back to Nora. "You teach him that?" "No. He's my choice. And I came to offer you something without crowns." Nora reached into her belt pouch and pulled out the folded birch bark with the lullaby map. She laid it flat on the table between them. "This is the route to the first nursery where Thornveil stored taken children. I found it in the Frosthold registry, cross-referenced with village records that forty southern mothers helped me read. The bed in that nursery is still warm--they moved the children elsewhere. I have the second map." The hall went quiet. Margrave Holt stared at the bark, then lifted her eyes. The hollow in her expression cracked open. "You're offering my daughter's location." "I'm offering every mother here the chance to walk into that nursery and take back what belongs to them. I don't want your allegiance or your pack oath. I want you to know where the door is, and to be ready when I call." Margrave Holt rose from her bench. She walked down the steps slowly, boots echoing, until she stood in front of Nora. "You carry the mark child. The one the shadowless woman wants." "Yes." "And you're standing in my hall, unarmed, with a Lycan King who stripped his crown so you could speak first." "Yes." Margrave Holt looked at Hope. The baby turned her dark eyes toward the elder and smiled. No reason. No warning. Just a small, perfect curve of her mouth that made the torchlight flicker. Margrave Holt's knees buckled. She did not fall--she knelt. One knee, then both, pressing into the frost still covering the stone. Behind her, without a word, without a command, the forty wolves of Thorn's End knelt with her. The hall bowed to Hope Ashford.
