The archive door at Frosthold had no handle. Nora had passed it a dozen times since the Council hearing, but the old woman from the second village had drawn a map on birch bark with a charred stick, and the map ended here, at a door that did not open. Darius stood behind her, arms crossed. He had not asked why she needed the archive. He had simply led her through the lower passages and stopped at the silver seam in the stone. "You've never been inside," she said. "It answered to the previous keeper. When she died, it sealed." His voice was careful. "I assumed it was a grief lock." Nora pressed her palm to the cold seam. The stone drank her warmth. The lullaby rose from her chest before she thought--the tune she'd learned in the valley, the Thornveil command. The first note left her lips, and the stone began to hum. The silver seam glowed warm, like embers under ash. But the door did not open. She stopped. "It's not enough." "It opened for the keeper," Darius said. He moved closer. "What did the keeper do that you haven't?" Nora remembered the old woman's words: *You've been singing a Thornveil command.* The command required more than melody. "She sang it as ownership. The song unlocks because the singer claims what's inside." She looked at the seam. "I don't want to own what's in there. I want to understand it." "Then understand it," Darius said quietly. "Understanding is not the same as taking." She turned back and sang again. This time she shaped the lullaby as a question--not a claim of possession, but a request for revelation. The notes were the same. The shape was not. The silver seam pulsed twice, and the stone split with a sound like ice cracking. Inside, the room was small. One shelf held leather-bound ledgers with dates burned into their spines. A wooden cradle sat empty in the corner. On the wall above it, someone had carved the same bleeding tree from the Council's foundation stone, roots curling into a woman's face. Nora opened the oldest ledger. Row after row of mothers' names, each with a date and the word *Collected*. "This is a mother-debt registry," she said. "Kept here because Frosthold was supposed to be safe." Darius stood at the doorway. "The room never opened to me." "Because the keeper sang as ownership." She touched the page. "I sang as need. But I still opened it." She closed the ledger, her fingers cold. She would not claim that power. She would not sing the lullaby as a lockpick for any door the court wanted sealed. Hope was not a key. That night, Nora lay in the dark, the registry's weight settled in her bones. Hope slept in her cradle beside the bed, one small hand curled against her cheek. The fire had burned to embers. Then she heard it. A single note. Soft. Unfinished. Hope was still asleep, her lips parted, her breath even. But her throat moved again, and the note came again--the forbidden last tone from the lullaby, the one that signified claiming what had been sung. Hope hummed it in her sleep, pure and untaught, and Nora's blood went cold.
