The courtyard was red with moonlight and black with thorns. Darius stood between Seraphine and the refugee wing, half shifted back to human, bleeding from cuts that smoked where Thornveil silver had touched him. Seraphine knelt in the snow with one arm broken. The patron stood untouched. Of course she did. Nora entered the courtyard with Maeve behind her, Iris supported between two guards, and the stolen ledger page pressed against her heart. The patron smiled. "You gather broken women like charms." Nora stopped at the center of the yard. "They gather themselves." "And you call that freedom?" "Yes." "Freedom is hunger, fear, and men like Rowan waiting at the first warm door. I made houses. Records. Lines that survived." "You made cages and called the lock a family." The patron's face twisted. The blood moon brightened. Nora felt pressure inside her, not labor, not yet, but a demand from the old law to decide what the crown-moon claim meant. The Council had wanted succession. Thornveil wanted ownership. The refugees wanted release. Hope moved under Nora's palm. What do you want? Nora thought. The answer came as warmth. Not words. Direction. Nora took the stolen page and held it high. "Selene Thorn survived. Elara Ashford survived long enough to save me. Mara survived long enough to testify. Iris survived long enough to bring the page. Every woman you reduced to a line item became a witness." The silver lines on her wrist spread up her arm. Darius stepped toward her. She shook her head once. Not because she rejected him. Because this claim had to begin in her body and end in her choice. Nora placed the ledger page on the snow. "Crown-moon claim," she said, voice carrying across the courtyard, "is not a throne claim." The patron hissed. "It is a release claim." The snow lit under the page. Names began appearing across the courtyard floor. Hundreds. Then more. Women, children, servants, debt-bound wolves, vanished mothers, renamed daughters. The blood moon flickered as if clouds passed over it, but there were no clouds. The patron lunged. Darius intercepted her. This time his blade cut. Black blood struck the snow. The names blazed brighter. Seraphine screamed, "Stop her." No one moved. Even Rowan, dragged out under guard to witness the final claim against Blackridge, only stared at the names with hollow eyes. Nora felt Hope's power join hers, small and fierce and unbearably alive. "By crown-moon blood and maternal consent," Nora said, "every unlawful bond tied to Thornveil, Blackridge, and their transfer houses is called to review. Every hidden birth record is reopened. Every unnamed child is restored to record by the mother's word first." The patron shrieked as cracks spread through her white skin. "You cannot free what I built." Nora looked at the refugees behind her. "I already started." The names rose from the snow like silver birds. They struck the patron at once. For the first time, she bled light. The blood moon went dark. When night returned, the patron was gone. Not dead. Nora knew that in the pit of her body. But gone. Seraphine lay in the snow, suddenly old. Darius came to Nora, blade lowered. "Are you hurt?" "Yes," she said honestly. "But not taken." He touched his forehead to hers before the entire courtyard, and no one called it claim. Then Hope moved again. Low. Hard. Nora gasped. Maeve's eyes widened. The baby had chosen a dramatic time to begin.
