📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 48: The Blood Moon Ambush
The countdown gave them three hours. Not in numbers. Every pulse of the black mark on Iris's throat made the healers tighten bandages. Thornveil let her run because she arrived as a message, a corpse, a doorway.
Darius locked down Frosthold.
Nora copied the stolen ledger by hand. No magic near the paper. *Selene Thorn. First surviving crown-moon child. Escaped north. Birthed Lycan heir. Guardian line dormant until next crown-moon pregnancy.*
"Guardian line." Darius stood at the window, his mother's renamed history crushed against his ribs. His jaw was tight, the muscle jumping.
Nora looked up. "You were never a tool."
"It means Thornveil designed my life around someone like you."
"Someone like me is still me." She set the quill down. Rolled the ink. Let the silence stretch. His hand was cold when it brushed hers on the desk--just a fingertip, just a second. She felt the callus on his thumb, the slight tremor he couldn't hide. He let the name reach him. She didn't pull away.
Then the blood moon rose.
It should not have. The calendar said waning white. Instead, red light bled through the snowpane, and every Thornveil mark in Frosthold started smoking, a thin black curl rising from wrists, collarbones, throats.
Iris screamed from the infirmary.
The outer wards failed.
The attack came from below. Not gates. Not windows. The old nursery ward Mrs. Ellery had woken--a breach under the west tower--and Thornveil hunters poured through the foundation stones. Seraphine led in black armor, visor down, her boots leaving frozen cracks in the stone. Behind her, the patron like a walking chill, its breath fogging the air.
Darius shifted fully.
Nora had seen wolves. She had seen Alphas. She had seen monsters in uniform. The Lycan King hit the ground, frost shattering from his paws. He was black as pitch, silver eyes, steam rising off his ribs, his breath a low growl that vibrated through the floor. He landed between the hunters and the refugee wing, and the first line broke on him like water on rock.
Nora did not watch long.
Her fight was not at the gate.
In the infirmary, Iris thrashed. The black mark split open, a thin line of dark blood. Through her throat, the patron whispered names. *Selene Thorn. Elara Ashford. Hope Ashford.*
Nora clamped both hands over Iris's ears. "Don't listen."
Iris laughed weakly, blood on her lips. "I'm trying not to die, Nora."
Maeve held Iris's shoulders down, her knuckles white. "Try harder."
The mark flared, heat radiating. The patron reached through Iris toward Nora's stomach--a cold curl, a tug that made her gasp.
Hope kicked once, sharp and insistent.
The silver lines on Nora's wrist answered. They wrapped around Iris's black mark, pulsing. Light met poison. Iris screamed, arching. Nora nearly did too, the pain shooting up her arm. Her hand stayed.
Outside, Darius howled. Not pain. Warning.
Seraphine had reached the refugee wing.
Lina stood in the hall with Rose behind her and a kitchen knife in her hand. The blade shook, but her feet were planted. The air was cold, smelling of snow and iron.
Nora could not be in two places. That was what Thornveil counted on.
Then June Cross stepped into the hall, baby Elise against her chest, the child's hand clutching her collar. A tiny fist, pale and sure.
"Names," June said.
One by one, the packless women began to speak. Lina Ash. Rose. June Cross. Elise Cross. Maeve Quinn. Each name landed like a stone. The names rolled through Frosthold. Every refugee. Every servant. Every guard whose family had ever been written into debt. The sound struck Seraphine harder than steel. She staggered. Her visor cracked, a hairline fissure across the left eye.
Nora pulled the last of the poison from Iris's mark.
The black crescent shattered, falling like ash.
Iris went limp, alive. Her chest still rose.
The patron screamed from the courtyard. A wet, dragging sound, like something pulled from a wound.
Darius howled once more.
Nora ran. Through the hall, past the women still speaking, past June's shoulder, past the knife in Lina's hand--toward the sound of the Lycan King. She heard the wet rip of the patron's breath, saw the cracked visor of Seraphine reflected in a shard of frost, and Darius standing over a pile of broken armor, blood slicking his fur.
