📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 23: The Price of Frost Law
By morning, Darius's enemies had learned to use Nora's name.
They did not call her a victim. That would have been too kind.
They called her destabilizing.
The petition came from three northern Alphas who had smiled at Darius for years and feared him for longer. It demanded that Nora be removed from Frosthold until the succession review ended. For safety, the petition said.
Safety had become a word men used when they meant control.
Darius read the petition once and tossed it into the fire.
Nora watched the paper curl. "Can you do that?"
"Yes."
"Legally?"
"Also yes."
Maeve, propped on the sofa with more pillows than patience, said, "I like him."
Nora did not smile. "They will not stop."
"No," Darius said. "Now that the child voided an omega contract, they know the crown-moon mark is not symbolic."
"It can undo debts."
"It can undo unlawful bonds. That threatens more than Rowan."
Nora thought of every pack that profited from quiet contracts, every Alpha who kept poor wolves obedient with numbers they could never repay. If her child could burn those chains, then half the north would call the baby a miracle and the other half would call it a weapon.
"What happens if your nobles turn on you?" she asked.
Darius leaned against the mantel. "They already have. Politely."
"Darius."
He met her eyes. "They can demand a throne confidence session. If enough ranked houses vote against me, I remain king in name but lose wartime command."
Maeve sat straighter. "Because you protected Nora?"
"Because I protected a woman who carries the power to bankrupt several noble families."
Nora felt suddenly heavier.
She had entered Frosthold with no shoes, no proof, and no plan beyond surviving the night. Now the Lycan King's throne stood under strain because she had refused to die quietly.
"I can leave," she said.
Darius went still.
Maeve made a rude sound. "Absolutely not."
Nora ignored her. "If my being here weakens your command, Thornveil wins. I can go to a neutral sanctuary."
"There is no neutral sanctuary for you."
"There has to be."
"There is law. There is stone. There are locks. None of them stop people who want what you carry."
"Then what do I do?"
Darius crossed the room and knelt in front of her chair so she had to look at him, not up at him.
"You stop offering yourself as the solution to other people's cowardice."
The words struck too close.
Nora looked away.
He did not let her hide in silence. "Rowan made crimes. Iris chose envy. Callum sold records. Thornveil bought blood. My nobles fear losing dirty money. None of that becomes your fault because you survived."
Maeve was very quiet.
Nora swallowed. "And if they vote against you?"
"Then I make them say in public that their loyalty depends on keeping omega debts intact."
The throne confidence session convened at dusk.
Nora attended against every recommendation except Darius's. He offered his arm. She took it because she wanted to, not because she needed help walking.
The northern nobles sat in a half circle of silver chairs. Three would not meet her eyes. Two stared openly at her stomach.
Darius stood before them and placed Lina Ash's voided contract on the central table.
"You may vote on my command," he said. "But first, each house will declare whether it believes unlawful debt bondage should survive crown-moon review."
No one spoke.
The silence lasted long enough to become an answer.
Then the doors opened behind Nora.
A young girl stepped in wearing a servant's gray dress and shaking so hard she could barely stand.
Lina Ash.
She looked at Nora and dropped to her knees.
"My lady," she whispered. "If your child can free one name, can they free my sisters too?"
