📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 22: The Child's First Shift
The recorder stone made Iris famous by sunset.
Not beloved. Not pitied. Famous in the way fire is famous when it reaches a roof.
Her confession played before the Council in a voice so clear no lawyer could dull it. Rowan knew. Iris drugged Nora. The blanket was a threat. Thornveil had been promised a child before the public rejection.
By the time the stone went dark, three Alphas had withdrawn recognition from Blackridge.
Four had not.
Those four watched Nora's stomach more than her face.
"The succession review moves forward," Venn announced. "The crown-moon response makes the unborn child a political claimant until bloodline testing confirms or denies."
Nora rose. "My child is not applying for office."
A gray-haired Alpha from Redpine said, "Your child woke the relic. That is not your private grief anymore."
Darius's voice cut across the chamber. "Speak to her again as if motherhood cancels personhood, and you will leave this chamber without a rank."
Redpine sat back.
Nora should have been grateful.
She was tired of needing protection.
That night, anger kept her awake. Frosthold's guest suite felt too warm, then too cold. Every hallway carried footsteps. Every whisper sounded like Thornveil. Maeve slept under guard. Darius had doubled the watch and trusted no one.
Nora sat by the window with one of the rescued omega contracts spread on her lap.
The name at the top belonged to a girl called Lina Ash.
Fifteen.
Sold for three winters of sanctuary debt.
Nora touched the ink and thought of how many girls had disappeared while she balanced Blackridge accounts and believed the numbers Rowan gave her.
"I am sorry," she whispered.
The page warmed.
Nora looked down.
Silver light moved beneath the ink like a fish under ice. Her stomach tightened, not with pain, but with pressure so sudden she gasped.
Darius was at her door before she could call.
"Nora."
"Something is wrong."
He crossed the room in three strides.
The baby moved again.
Not a flutter. Not a kick.
A pulse.
The window frost bloomed outward in the shape of a crescent crown. Every rescued contract on Nora's desk lifted into the air. Names shone, one after another, until the room became a constellation of stolen lives.
Darius dropped to one knee in front of her.
"Look at me."
"Is it hurting the baby?"
"No." His hand hovered, waiting.
Nora grabbed it and pressed it over the place where the pulse glowed.
Darius inhaled sharply.
Under both their hands, the child's power answered.
For one impossible second, Nora felt a wolf that was not hers, not Rowan's, not Darius's. Small. Fierce. Made of moonlight and teeth.
The unborn child shifted in spirit.
The candles went out.
Every guard in the hall shouted at once.
When light returned, the contracts had fallen to the floor in a perfect circle around Nora's chair.
In the center lay Lina Ash's page.
The debt line had burned away.
Darius picked it up carefully. "The contract is void."
Nora's throat tightened. "The baby did that?"
"You did it together."
A horn sounded from the Council tower.
Darius stood, page in hand.
Nora knew before he spoke that law had just become danger again.
"The Council felt the shift," he said.
Another horn answered from the southern road.
Darius looked toward the window.
"And so did Thornveil."
