📖 Blue Orchard Witness Rail
Rail Paint Chip at Harbor Worksite 032
Harbor Worksite freezer B had already logged a clean rail sample under C-7B-ROOM417 before Mira reached the first-aid annex. The entry glowed on the intake monitor behind the wire glass: SOURCE TAG SATISFACTION PENDING. CONTROL SAMPLE AVAILABLE. Sienna read it while rain blew through the open bay door and spotted the number stamped on a stainless evidence drawer. "They put the clean rail in our slot."
Noah kept his phone low, recording the monitor, the drawer number, and the line of wet boot prints leading from Pike's trailer to the annex threshold. "Local file," he said, as if the words could hold him back from grabbing the whole story with both hands. Tessa stood beside the stretcher cabinet, shoulders tight. Jalen stayed half a step in front of her without blocking the camera. Pike's men had followed them across the yard again and now leaned near the tool rack, waiting for someone to make contact first.
The freezer custodian wore a canvas apron over hospital scrubs. His badge read ALDEN RYCE, HARBOR FIRST AID ANNEX. He looked at Mira's HBI-2 reactivation slip, then at the K. Lorne checkout page, and did not open the drawer. "The control sample satisfies the hold if property consent is accepted."
Sienna set her red keycard on the counter. She put the Blue Receipt beside it, then the bracelet still looped around her wrist, then the Room 417 seal. Her phone sat on top of the seal, frozen at 04:44. "No."
Ryce blinked. "I did not ask you a question."
"You did," she said. "You asked if I would let a clean rail close my room."
Rusk stepped from under the awning with his coat collar turned up. "The worksite is offering a neutral control. That is more protective than exposing a source tag tied to a minor's medical review."
Mira pinned the HBI-2 slip under her palm before the wind could lift it. "Field-only source-tag comparison. C-7B-ROOM417. K. Lorne companion review. Freezer B."
Ryce's gaze moved to Pike. Pike said nothing. He only tapped one finger against the tool rack where a fresh strip of blue-painted rail sat wrapped in clear plastic. The label on it was too new, the ink too black. Jalen saw it too. "That came from inside the trailer," he said. "It is not from the old intake rail."
One of Pike's men laughed. "Maintenance witness wants to be a lab tech now."
Tessa raised her phone. "Say it again with the sample label visible."
The man stopped laughing. Noah did not move over the yellow line chalked on the floor, but his camera caught Tessa's hand shaking and the sample shining dry while everything else in the bay was wet.
Ryce slid a consent form across the counter. "If Ms. Rowe accepts the clean rail as property-hold satisfaction, I can mark the source tag matched without opening freezer B. Her room remains paused pending administrative closure."
Sienna pushed the form back with the edge of the keycard. "Administrative closure is how you taught every desk to steal four minutes from me."
The phone vibrated. 04:44 changed to 04:43. A second line appeared: CLEAN CONTROL ACCEPTANCE WILL CLOSE HOLD. Mira felt the old anger move through the group like current through wet wire. She kept her voice level. "Mr. Ryce, if the timer moves because the worksite refuses field comparison, your refusal becomes the trigger."
Rusk said, "Careful."
"No," Mira said. "Exact."
Ryce looked at the monitor again. His hand hovered over the drawer keypad. "Freezer B source tags are sealed evidence."
"So is the clean rail," Jalen said. "Except it walked in dry."
Pike finally came off the wall. "Do not let a displaced hotel guest and a suspended reporter contaminate evidence control."
Noah's mouth tightened. "Disabled reporter. If you're going to use me, get the obstruction right."
Sienna took the Blue Receipt and placed it over the consent line on the form. "Open the drawer or print that Pike's dry rail is enough to move my room."
Ryce entered his code. The freezer gave a low mechanical click, but the drawer did not release. The monitor flashed amber: CONTROL SAMPLE PRIORITY. PROPERTY HOLD SATISFACTION AVAILABLE. Sienna's phone stayed at 04:43. Mira saw the trap. "It will not open until someone rejects the control sample on the record."
"I reject it," Sienna said.
Ryce shook his head. "The affected property holder is not the medical-source requester."
Mira lifted Vale's badge card in its plastic sleeve. "Then I reject it as the hearing-badge requester."
"You are not the family."
Tessa stepped to the chalk line. Jalen did not stop her, but he stayed close enough that Pike's men had to move around both of them. "I saw the East Parcel Van," she said. "I saw the old route board. I watched you bring that dry sample from Pike's trailer, and I am saying it before the drawer opens."
For a second, no one spoke. The freezer hummed. Rain ticked against the bay door. Then the monitor changed: WITNESS OBJECTION LOGGED. CONTROL SAMPLE DISPUTED. SOURCE TAG COMPARISON REQUIRED.
Ryce's face went gray. He opened drawer B-4 with both hands visible. Inside lay two evidence sleeves. One held the dry blue rail strip Pike had wanted. The other held a small tag with old adhesive browned at the edges and a fleck of blue paint sealed under cloudy film. The printed field on the tag read C-7B-ROOM417.
Sienna made a sound like she had been hit, but she did not step back. Mira held the checkout page beside the tag without touching it. The numbers matched. Ryce scanned the source tag. The machine rejected the first pass, then caught the second with a harsh beep.
MATCH: OLD RAIL-SIDE INTAKE RESIDUE. BO-TR-117-C. HBI-2 / K. LORNE. D. VOSS RELAY FAMILY. CONTROL SAMPLE SUBSTITUTION ATTEMPT DETECTED.
Rusk reached for the counter. Noah's camera caught his hand before he pulled it back. Pike's dry sample sat suddenly ridiculous in its clear sleeve, clean enough to accuse itself.
Ryce tore the printout along the metal edge. "This requires tribunal preservation."
Mira read the next line before he could fold it. "Blue Receipt at Tribunal Room Thirty-Three. Produce freezer B source tag and disputed control sample before witness rail. Room 417 hold conversion remains suspended until rail receives both."
Sienna's phone flickered back to 04:44. This time the line beneath it did not say consent. It said WITNESS RAIL PRODUCTION REQUIRED. She put the red keycard over the printout and looked past Pike toward the road to the tribunal. "Then they do not get to choose which rail counts," she said. "We take both."
