Chapter 070: Elise Draws the Old Apartment Elise's second square did not close. Her finger stalled at the top corner as if the missing line had weight, and the borrowed-star bruise above her collarbone answered by sharpening into a narrow pale bar. Northstar's phone lifted the bar into language before anyone else could breathe: bounded object memory may expose protected location. Aven's tablet opened a location-risk field. Vale's microphone cleared every small sound in the room, including the wet drag in Elise's tubing. "No address," Mira said. She said it to Elise first, because the child's eyes were on her, and then to the room. "No route. No room plan. No family name." Elise's finger moved again, slower. A square. One old window. One old door mark. Keth angled his hand under the tube so the movement would not steal breath. The fourth support light warmed by a thumb's width, then held there, afraid to commit. Northstar's attorney stepped into the gold spill from the rich wing. "If it is an apartment, the court must know which apartment." The phone agreed at once: certify address or exclude memory. The public plug gave one hard buzz. Behind the catch, the old wheel clicked forward, then back, as if the hidden side had heard a door open and slam. Liora's hand went white around the no-logo key. "Object behavior," Mira said. She drew a box on the redaction form, but left its corners open. "Not location testimony." She set the form where Mara's camera could see it. Oren adjusted the frame until only paper, Elise's hand, Keth's knuckles, Clay's still body, and the fourth light stayed visible. "Officer, repeat the protected boundary." The officer read from Mira's handwriting. "Object behavior, not location testimony. No address. No route. No layout. No legal family name. No ward category. No inventory. No hidden endpoint." Each forbidden word made Northstar's phone flash as if it had been fed. location withheld. route withheld. layout withheld. Clay moved half a step between the gold spill and Elise, then stopped himself with both palms open. "Requested body-only boundary," he said, before the device could make him command. The fourth light steadied instead of dimming. The candle dot beside Liora's key went white. Elise tapped the blanket twice. Keth looked down. The blue fabric had a threadbare square near the edge, almost the same size as the shape Elise had drawn in the air. Elise touched the square, then touched her own lips, then the blanket again. She did not speak. The borrowed-star bruise shifted from window bar to a small uneven patch. "She is identifying a textile in a prior residence," Northstar's attorney said. "That is inventory." The tablet offered household item list. Aven's mouth tightened. "It is offering a list field," he said, and turned the screen so Vale could see it. "If we accept the list field, the support line changes." The public plug went thin. Elise's tube tugged once under Keth's hand. Mira put two fingers on the table, beside the blanket and not on it. "Not inventory. Touch match." She looked at Elise. "Only if you want." Elise's eyes stayed open. She tapped the worn square, then drew the old window bar again. The fourth light brightened. Behind the catch came three protected marker taps: one, two, flat. Liora made a sound in her throat and bit it off so fast her teeth clicked. Vale heard it. So did Northstar. The phone printed recognition witness available. The donor guardian's soft voice followed, perfectly timed. "The family can be stabilized without forcing the child to speak. My foundation can fund a safe relocation under confidential care, with family contact supervised for everyone's protection." The gold light spread toward Liora's shoes. The candle dot flickered yellow. Liora's key knocked against the table. Clay did not turn to her. Mira did. "Aunt Liora," she said, making the kinship warm but not legal. "Do not name the place." Liora nodded once, too hard. "I won't." The microphone caught how close she came to breaking. She lifted the key, then lowered it before Northstar could call it an entry device. "The edge of that blanket was sewn after a winter leak." Northstar's phone brightened. Liora saw it and swallowed the rest. "No address," she said. "No room." "That is still residence confirmation," Northstar's attorney said. "It is fabric repair confirmation," Mira answered. "Officer, read only that." The officer repeated, "Fabric repair confirmation." The tablet tried to file it under household history. Aven did not select the field. Instead he typed a new one with two fingers: bounded care object. The public plug's hum deepened. The fourth light warmed another inch. Elise's mask cleared more fully, and Keth's shoulders dropped for the first time since the drawing began. Vale leaned toward the microphone. "The court will not accept a family home map by implication." "Then don't build one," Mira said. The room went still around the risk of correcting him. She kept her eyes on the drawing, not on Vale's face. "Accept what changed when the child touched the blanket's repaired edge and drew the window shape. Support improved. The old wheel advanced. Protected markers answered. Liora recognized repair without naming the place. That is the chain." Northstar's attorney pointed at Elise's floating square. "A window plus a door is a layout." Elise's hand curled. The fourth light dipped. Keth snapped, "Stop making her door dangerous." The microphone made his anger clean, too clean. Vale's pen moved toward sanction. Clay's palm rose in the frame, request-only, not command. The old wheel clicked once, hard. Mira moved before the room could punish Keth. "Elise," she said, "you can erase the door." She pushed a blank corner of the redaction form closer. "Only the care mark. Only the thing that helped you know it was yours." Elise stared at the paper. Her hand trembled above it. Then she drew no door. She drew the square of blanket cloth, the short window bar, and one tiny crooked stitch crossing the edge. Liora covered her mouth with both hands. The candle dot went white so bright it washed out the yellow. Behind the catch, marker taps answered in the same rhythm as before, but softer, like children trying not to shout. Northstar's phone paused on the old words, then rewrote them: bounded care object preserved without location certification. Aven copied the line before it could vanish. Mara's camera caught the tablet, Elise's paper, and the fourth light in one frame. Oren whispered, "Clean." Clay stayed still enough to look almost absent. The donor guardian tried one more door. "If the child recognizes a former home object, she needs counsel to decide whether family reunification or protected relocation is safer. My foundation can appoint independent private counsel for the generator and support line, so no one here has to expose more." The fourth support light flared, then shrank to a sharp white point. The public plug's hum turned ragged. The phone added: private counsel for generator may accept support authority. Vale looked at the new line. He did not select it, but he did not reject it either. Mira slid Elise's drawing into the evidence sleeve before anyone could touch it. "No private counsel for a machine," she said. Northstar's attorney smiled. "Then who speaks for the power keeping her alive?"
