📖 Verdict Beneath the Borrowed Sky
Clay Testifies Against Himself
Chapter 069: Clay Testifies Against Himself
Northstar's sentence stayed on the phone long enough for the room to start obeying it. prior public witness role required for admissible behavior chain. Aven's tablet copied the line into a witness-role field and offered three boxes: prior clearance, revoked clearance, replacement witness. The public plug hummed under the first box before anyone touched it. The gold light under the private-wing door spread over Clay's empty badge pocket like a hand finding an old wound.
"Do not answer yet," Mira said. Clay's jaw flexed once. He kept both hands flat in the camera's frame, palms open, fingers away from every device. Elise's mask clouded and cleared in shallow pulls. Keth lowered his shoulder between her tubing and the tablet glare. Behind the catch, the old wheel made a thin forward sound, then stopped as if it too was waiting to see what kind of witness Clay would become.
Vale looked at Clay because the room knew how to read him. "You held a public fire role." The microphone made the sentence too clean. Northstar's attorney stepped closer. "He held the only role the court can verify without exposing protected persons or protected places." The donor guardian's soft voice followed at once. "My foundation can fund reinstatement for the limited purpose of child protection."
The fourth support light went cold blue on reinstatement. Clay did not move. Mira pointed to the light, not to him. "Funding his old authority is a private replacement." The officer repeated it, and the microphone crackled around the word private. Aven's tablet added funded reinstatement under replacement witness. The candle dot beside Liora's key grayed at the same time.
"Clay," Mira said, "what can you testify to right now?" Northstar's attorney smiled before Clay answered. The phone brightened: witness may certify chain through prior role. Clay looked at the empty place where a badge had once pressed his shirt. "I can testify that I do not hold that role." His voice came out rough, not noble. "It was stripped when I would not turn a route into a command."
The public plug stuttered, then steadied. Mara's camera caught the stutter. Oren whispered, "Seen." Aven's tablet tried to make the answer fit: revoked clearance contamination. The gold light brightened. Elise's tube tightened against Keth's knuckles. Keth snapped, "That word costs breath." The officer repeated, "Revoked clearance contamination affected support." Vale's pen stopped above the order pad.
Northstar's attorney turned on the opening. "Then his testimony is contaminated by his own revoked status." The tablet offered exclude witness. The old wheel rolled backward. The fourth light dimmed until it left Elise's mask in a gray half-shadow. Clay took one step back from the gold line and lifted both hands higher, making the loss visible. "Exclude my old role," he said. "Not the chain."
Mira felt the sentence lock into the room. She wrote it on the redaction form, large enough for the camera: exclude old role; preserve observed behavior. "Officer, read only the first half." The officer read, "Exclude old role." The public plug held. The wheel did not retreat. "Now the second." The officer read, "Preserve observed behavior." The fourth support light warmed by a finger's width, and the candle dot went from gray to white.
Vale's eyes moved from Clay to the devices. Northstar's phone printed: behavior chain lacks certified public witness. "No," Mira said. "It has separate public witnesses." She pointed in order, each point tied to an object instead of a person. "Microphone clarity. Camera exposure. Public plug hum. Fourth support light. Candle response. Old wheel movement. Marker taps. Mask and tubing. Clay's body position, only when requested." Each item answered in a small way. The plug hummed. Mara adjusted focus. Behind the catch came three protected taps: one, two, flat.
The donor guardian stepped into the gold spill. "A body position is still a witness substitute." Clay's shoulder shifted, blocking him without touching him. The phone flashed body block may assume command. Clay went still at once. "Requested body-only boundary," he said. "No control. No instruction. No route." The words sounded practiced because they had cost him before. Mira did not let them become a speech. "What changed when he stopped moving?" she asked.
Aven stared at the tablet. "Gold light advanced." The officer repeated it. "What changed when Clay named no control?" Aven swallowed. "Fourth light recovered." The officer repeated that too. Vale wrote both lines, slow and visible. The old wheel clicked once toward the catch. Liora's hand shook around the no-logo key, but she did not speak a name.
Northstar's attorney struck the bench rail with two fingers. "Counsel is using machinery to impeach a witness." "I am using machinery to keep the witness from swallowing everyone else," Mira said. She turned to Vale. "If Clay's old clearance is the doorway, Northstar owns the door. If his revoked status excludes the chain, Northstar wins by punishing him for refusing command. The public chain has to survive him."
Vale did not like the sentence. The gold light showed that before his face did; it thickened under the door, bright enough to turn the borrowed-star bruise yellow at its edge. Elise coughed. Keth caught the mask seal with two fingers. "Decide faster," he said, and nobody sanctioned him for it because the tube made the cost visible.
"Mr. Clay," Vale said, stripping even the title down. "Do you certify this behavior chain?" Northstar's phone pulsed with satisfaction. Aven's finger hovered over prior clearance. Clay looked at Mira, and she shook her head once. He looked at Elise's mask, then at the fourth light. "No," he said. "I refuse to certify it through me."
The gold light flared. Northstar's attorney inhaled as if victory had a smell. Then Clay added, "I testify against my old authority. It should not be trusted with this chain. It makes living signals answer to the person allowed to stand over them." The public plug grew louder. The candle dot held white. The old wheel rolled forward until the catch clicked. Behind it, protected marker taps answered in a quick, fierce rhythm that Liora covered with her hand instead of translating.
Mira seized the rhythm before Northstar could call it identity. "Behavior response, protected." The officer repeated it. Mara's camera held the catch, not the gap. Oren said, "No faces." Aven's tablet stopped offering prior clearance and opened a new field in yellow: public behavior chain preserved without role certification. Vale stared at it for three breaths. On the fourth, he selected it.
Northstar's phone fought back: bounded object memory may expose protected location. Elise's eyes opened under the borrowed sky. Her fingers, small and blue at the tips, lifted from the blanket and drew a square in the air, then one old door mark, then a line that made Liora gasp and bite the sound in half. The fourth light warmed. The borrowed-star bruise sharpened into the outline of an old window.
"Do not name it," Mira said, but Elise was already drawing again.
