Chapter 23: Roof Reservoir The first drops from the ceiling were clear, and that made them worse. If they had glowed violet, Lena could have treated them as another root response, another contaminated reach from VennDyne's living system. Clear rain meant the reservoir above them had answered before the roots finished climbing. It meant Jun's sound tube had pointed to water that still remembered being public. "Mara, three rungs," Lena said. "No hero climb." "I have one heroic ankle and one lawsuit ankle." Mara pushed the camera strap tight around her wrist and dragged herself toward the blue-eight tile. The old maintenance throat behind it exhaled cold air and dust that smelled like wet copper. "If the roof kills me, make the deposition flattering." "If the roof kills you, I failed before the deposition." The grate behind them bent inward with a final shriek. Civic Rain's inspection light cut across Jun's case, the drain cradle, and the first roof drops. A gloved hand reached through the gap, palm open as if seizure could pretend to be rescue. "Containers down," the basement officer ordered. "Hands visible." Lena slid the clear droplet tube and the vapor-sound tube deeper into the evidence sleeve. "Mara, climb." She went first, because she had the camera and because Lena needed the record looking upward. The ladder inside the throat was not a ladder so much as old iron half-moons bolted into damp concrete. Mara hissed at the first rung and kept moving. Lena followed with the umbrella hook across her back and one palm stinging from burned metal. The roots entered after them, no longer crawling like plants. They shot through the seam in controlled jerks, violet sleeves flattening themselves against the throat walls, making room for one another as if trained by pressure. Rain fell around them in clear vertical threads. Each drop hit iron, skin, camera casing, then vanished into grooves cut for a maintenance system the city had declared inactive. Arlo's voice came through the wand against Lena's shoulder. "At the third rung, there should be a service lip. Ask before you turn left." "Mara," Lena said. "Can you reach the lip?" "I can reach it. I cannot be elegant about it." "Reach it. Then tell me what you see." Mara hauled herself onto the lip with a noise she would deny later. Her camera beam swung upward and caught a circle of glass set into the concrete ceiling, clouded by age on the outside and washed clean from within. Behind it, water moved rather than dripped, a slow circular body bright where roots pressed against the far side. "Tank," Mara said. Her voice changed. "Big enough to drown the whole ward if it opens." Lena reached the lip and looked. The roof reservoir sat above the conservatory spine like a hidden sky. Curved glass ribs held a shallow lake over their heads, and beneath the lake, old municipal stamps ran along the service rim: ROOF EMERGENCY CATCHMENT - PUBLIC OVERFLOW RESERVE - INACTIVE. Someone had cut a newer VennDyne plate across the last word. ADAPTIVE RAIN CULTURE SOURCE. Patent language over a city scar. Clear water knocked in threes against a rusted float arm. Mara raised the camera. "Inactive reservoir is moving. Public overflow stamp visible under VennDyne source plate. Float valve knocking." Celeste's voice reached them through a roof speaker, closer now. "You are inside a patient weather-control system. Any interference from that throat risks every oxygen culture below." Lena wiped rain from her eye with her wrist. "Then why is a patient weather-control system stamped public overflow reserve?" "Historical infrastructure integration." "Say ownership." Silence answered before the roots did. The violet sleeves reached the glass ribs and spread like fingers. Wherever they touched, the clear water behind the glass began to color from the edges inward. Lena pulled the vapor-sound tube from her sleeve and held it against the service rim. The tube did not glow. It knocked back. Three tiny ticks answered the float arm, glass to glass. Mara caught it. "Tube is answering the reservoir." "Not the roots," Lena said. "Keep the roots and tube separate in frame." Civic Rain's light flared below. A second voice shouted, "They are in the roof throat." Arlo spoke fast, then stopped. "Lena, if the old reservoir has a sample cock, it will be under the municipal stamp, not the VennDyne plate. You did not ask me to open it. I am describing where it should be." "Good." Lena found the small brass cock half-hidden under a crust of white mineral. It was wired shut with a VennDyne tag that had no city seal. The roots were spreading over the glass faster now, violet color sliding into the clear body of the tank, making the rain pretty from above. If the rain turns pretty, it has already been bought. Jun's sentence steadied her hand. She hooked the umbrella tip under the VennDyne wire and pulled. The wire snapped, but not cleanly. It whipped across her knuckles and opened skin. Blood ran into roof rain, and for one terrible second the nearest root bent toward the red instead of the tank. "It follows human markers," Mara said. "Then don't give it another one." Lena closed her fist and shoved the bleeding hand under her coat. With the other hand she opened the sample cock a quarter turn. Clear water spat into the groove, then into the open mouth of an empty tube. It was cold enough to ache through the glass. A strip inside the municipal rim woke under the flowing sample as the reservoir shuddered, gray squares appearing like the comparison strip in Jun's case. Mara zoomed so close the camera caught each word as it darkened. FIRST RAIN RELEASE - MANUAL DUMP. Lena's breath stopped as the next line printed beneath it. TIME BEFORE PUBLIC WEATHER EVENT: 00:41:12. Celeste cut the speaker so hard the silence cracked. Below them, Civic Rain began shouting over itself. Above them, the VennDyne plate on the reservoir rim lit with a clean corporate chime. The violet roots froze, then pulled away from the glass as if called by a stronger law than hunger. A patent filing countdown appeared across the plate. ADAPTIVE RAIN PRIORITY CLAIM WINDOW: 04:39:58. Mara's camera caught Lena's face reflected in the water over the words. "That's dawn." "No," Lena said, corking the roof sample beside Jun's clear droplet and the vapor-sound tube. "That's theft learning to file paperwork." The reservoir valve above them opened another inch by itself.
