Chapter 056: Service Stair Alarm The alarm turned the building inside out. Until that moment, Board Prep had been a door, a slot, a reader, and a voice that tried to make itself larger than the bodies around it. Service Stair C made it a place with a back. The public egress map did not show sealed documents or committee names, but it showed a rear landing behind the threshold, a narrow stair behind the rear landing, and a blue archive chase below the stair that had never appeared in the donor-wall tours. Lina felt the route settle in her body as something she could follow with a camera and witnesses instead of arguments. Keene moved first on the south hall feed. He did not leave Harrow alone with the reader. He shifted one shoulder toward the service junction while keeping his body inside the camera's frame, a small tactical compromise that made the Ash escort choose between blocking the stair and blocking the proof of blocking it. The escort chose wrong. He stepped closer to the junction, and the egress panel immediately printed `SERVICE STAIR C SENSOR: OBSTRUCTED BY REVIEW CUSTODY ACCESS.` Ravel's voice came through the radio, low and sharp. "Hold that line." "Facility lockdown requires review custody clearance," the escort said. "Review custody of what?" Lina asked from Conference A. The egress panel answered before he did. `CUSTODY CLASS: ACTIVE COPY / INDEX EXPORT TOKEN / CURRENT REVIEW INSERT MAP.` It did not say patient. It did not say fire. It said exactly what the last chapter of the morning had forced it to say: the thing being protected was the script. Nora's marker rested on the paper but did not move yet. Maya checked the monitor, then looked at Lina and gave the smallest nod. It was not permission to spend Nora. It was permission to keep the room from spending her without consent. Dorsett lifted the export folder into the camera's frame. "Court visitor request remains exterior-only. Service Stair C door state, rear-landing access claim, and transfer-route profile. No drawer contents. No audio." "Concur," Pell said. "Concur," Corbett said. Oren worked from the public egress layer. His hands were visible. His screen showed only the stair, the alarm state, and the badge/sensor fields. "Manual override request came from rear landing. It did not come from south hall." "Meaning someone is already behind Board Prep," Grant said. "Or a device is," Oren replied. Lenora's speaker came live with a click that made Grant's hand tighten on Nora's blanket. "You are manufacturing a chase. A rear landing exists because staff need to exit during an alarm. If you send officers toward that stair, you endanger the very patient you claim to protect." Nora's marker moved. She wrote slowly, each letter more angular than the last. `PATIENT HERE. STAIR THERE.` Grant read it. "Patient here. Stair there." The egress panel recorded the statement. `PATIENT LOCATION CONFERENCE A / STAIR ALARM DISTINCT.` Lina watched Saye's face close around that line. It took away the easiest lie. The alarm was not Nora's evacuation. The active patient was in view. At the service junction, the Ash escort lifted his badge toward a small black reader set into the wall trim. Keene's hand went to his radio. "Badge raised to stair reader. No contact yet." "If he scans, what releases?" Lina asked. Oren displayed the reader dependency. `SCAN RESULT PENDING: REAR LANDING DOOR RELEASE / BLUE ARCHIVE CHASE CALL / UTILITY LIFT HOLD.` A line beneath it pulsed amber. `TRANSFER PROFILE: HAND-CARRIED CASE OR TERMINAL CARTRIDGE.` Celia made a sound she could not hide. Lina turned to her. "You know the case." Celia did not answer quickly enough. "Ms. Rusk," Corbett said, "this is the moment for exterior memory." Celia put both hands on the chair back. "The blue archive chase had a narrow case rail. Not for patient files in boxes. For cartridges. Terminal cartridges. Old Board Prep side terminals could be lifted from the drawer and carried down the chase for safe review if the room was contested." "How old?" Dorsett asked. "Old enough for 2008." The egress panel printed `LOCAL STATEMENT CROSS-REFERENCE: TERMINAL CARTRIDGE COMPATIBLE.` The alarm tone sharpened. Harrow's custodian card still held the trustee receipt, but the rear landing did not need the receipt if it could move the active copy through the cartridge route. The Ash escort scanned. The reader flashed red, not green. Keene's voice cut in at once. "Scan refused." The egress panel printed `ACCESS DENIED: EXTERIOR RECEIPT HOLD ACTIVE / PATIENT ROUTE PRESERVATION.` For one second, Lina let herself feel the relief. Then the rear landing answered. `MANUAL OVERRIDE SECOND REQUEST / SOURCE: INSIDE STAIR C.` Someone inside the stair had tried again. Ravel said, "Keene, do you have a door sound?" Keene tilted his head toward the junction. "Metal pressure. No open." The south hall camera caught the Ash escort's mouth moving, but not the words. Oren widened the egress audio status, still exterior-only. `REAR LANDING INTERCOM ACTIVE / AUDIO CONTENT SEALED / CALLER ROLE: REVIEW CUSTODY AIDE.` The role again. Not name, not patient safety, not fire. Review custody aide. "No audio," Grant said immediately. "No audio," Lina confirmed. "Role and door state only." The intercom field obeyed. `DOOR STATE: HELD CLOSED.` `MANUAL FORCE DETECTED.` `OBJECT NEAR THRESHOLD: CASE PROFILE 18 INCH / HARD SHELL / BLUE HANDLE.` The blue handle moved through the room like a visible thing. Celia closed her eyes. Oren leaned closer, then stopped himself before the console could become a place to hide in. "That is the side-terminal cartridge case," Celia said. Counsel objected. "She cannot authenticate a sealed object through a profile." "She authenticated the rail system," Corbett said. "The egress panel authenticated the case profile. We are preserving, not adjudicating." The rear landing hit the door again. The egress panel changed from amber to red. `SERVICE STAIR ALARM ACTIVE / MANUAL FORCE ESCALATION.` At the same moment, Voss's tablet produced a new dependency line. Pell saw his eyes move and demanded, "Display." Voss displayed it with a hand that had stopped pretending to be steady. `NAMED PERSON OVERRIDE DELAY EXTENDED: ACTIVE COPY TRANSFER ATTEMPT IN PROGRESS.` Nora saw the line and smiled once, not with pleasure but with the terrible satisfaction of having the right enemy finally name itself. She wrote, `LINA CAN SEE.` Grant read it. His voice softened on Lina's name. "Lina can see." Lina did not waste the gift. "Put the south hall, the egress map, Nora's statement, Voss's dependency pane, and the donor-wall receipt hold in one frame." Oren built the four-panel view. He used the public egress map, Conference A camera, south hall feed, and local caption buffer. No sealed drawer. No audio. No private content. The frame showed Harrow's hands on the card, Keene holding the Ash escort off the reader, Nora in bed writing, and the red Service Stair C alarm flashing under the object profile. It was not a complete proof, but it was a complete scene. That mattered. A scene could not be filed away as a term. Saye tried one more route. "If the manual force continues, emergency protocol permits facility staff to cut power to the stair reader." "What happens if power is cut?" Lina asked. The egress map answered. `POWER CUT FAILSAFE: REAR LANDING DOOR RELEASES INWARD / SOUTH HALL READER DARK / TRANSFER QUEUE CONTINUES OFFLINE.` There it was. The safety move that would open the door from the inside, blind the public reader, and let the case move without the receipt hold. "Do not cut power," Ravel said. Saye's face tightened. "I did not say I would." "Then keep your hands visible," Ravel replied. Harrow's voice came through the south hall feed, thin with strain. "The card is burning." Maya looked at Nora's monitor. "We need a decision that does not make the custodian hold the whole building." Nora heard her. She looked at Grant, then at Lina, then at the four-panel view. Her marker moved slowly. `DOOR WITNESS. NOT CARD FOREVER.` Grant read it. "Door witness. Not card forever." Lina understood. The receipt hold had bought them the route. It could not be the only thing keeping the route from moving. "Ravel, can Keene place a physical door witness at Service Stair C without releasing the reader?" Keene answered from the feed. "Yes. I can stand on the public side of the line. Camera sees me. Escort stays back." The egress panel printed `PUBLIC SIDE DOOR WITNESS POSSIBLE / TRANSFER QUEUE PAUSE CAN SHIFT FROM RECEIPT HOLD TO OFFICER PRESENCE.` Harrow let out a sound that was almost a sob. Corbett stepped closer to the threshold. "Patient-rights concurrence for shifting pause to officer door witness." Pell said, "Court emergency concurrence." Dorsett recorded it. Keene moved to the service-stair door line. The Ash escort tried to move with him; Ravel's voice stopped him. "No." The egress panel counted the shift in three visible steps. `OFFICER PRESENCE CONFIRMED.` `EXTERIOR RECEIPT HOLD MAY RELEASE WITHOUT ACTIVE COPY TRANSFER.` `SERVICE STAIR DOOR HELD BY PUBLIC WITNESS.` Harrow pulled the custodian card away from the brass reader and pressed her shaking hand against her uniform. The donor-wall red light dimmed to amber, but the stair alarm stayed visible. Inside the stair, the hard case struck the door once more. This time the egress panel did not call it safety. `TRANSFER ATTEMPT BLOCKED BY PUBLIC DOOR WITNESS.` Then it added a field none of them had requested. `UTILITY LIFT HOLD EXTENDED / BLUE ARCHIVE CHASE WAITING.` Oren whispered, "The chase is still waiting." Lina looked at Nora. Nora looked back, exhausted and awake and terribly present. The active copy had not left. The tape had not played. The stair had shown its door, its case, its role, and its next destination. Then the floor map below Service Stair C lit a line Lina had not seen before, a narrow descent from the blue archive chase to a lower service landing marked only by a number. `UTILITY LIFT B2 CALL REQUESTED.` The number mattered before the room understood why. B2 had been the ghost under Nora's old route from the first hour, the place the controller claimed had authorized what Nora's body and voice had denied. Lina felt the whole chain tighten: visitor alias, service car thirteen, B-4 voice, blue drawer, trustee receipt, rehearsal tape, rear stair, blue archive chase, and now B2 again, not as a memory but as a live lift call under Board Prep's back. Grant saw it too. "B2 is where they said the override came from." "From a route," Oren said. "Not necessarily a person." Nora's marker moved before anyone could turn that into comfort. `ROUTE HIDES HAND.` Grant read it, and Lina repeated it into the phone because some lines needed more than one witness. "Route hides hand." The utility lift panel opened an exterior status box. `B2 CALL TYPE: CUSTODY RETURN / ARCHIVE SAFE REVIEW.` Under it came `OBJECT PROFILE ACCEPTED: HARD CASE / BLUE HANDLE / TERMINAL CARTRIDGE COMPATIBLE.` The words did not show the cartridge. They did not need to. The profile, the stair, the chase, and Celia's old rail memory had made the movement concrete enough to preserve. "Can the lift move while Keene holds the stair door?" Corbett asked. Oren checked the public egress dependency. "Not with the case at Service Stair C. But if there is a second route from the chase to B2, the call can wait. The lift can hold below until the case gets there." Saye said, "You are reading operations beyond your authorization." "Public egress dependency," Oren said without looking away from the screen. "It is telling us where the alarm sends people and objects." The Ash escort tried a different kind of stillness then, the kind that hoped to be mistaken for compliance. Keene did not buy it. "Step back from the stair line." "I am not touching the reader." "Step back from the line." The escort stepped back one inch, not enough. The egress map marked it. `REVIEW CUSTODY ACCESS REMAINS WITHIN TRANSFER ZONE.` Ravel said, "Two feet." He moved two feet because the screen had made his body measurable. Inside the stair, the case stopped hitting the door. That worried Lina more than the impact had. Silence was what this building did when it found another path. "Oren," she said. "Watching." He expanded the lower part of the map. No sealed camera, only door state and lift call. A dotted amber line blinked from the blue archive chase to `B2 RETURN VESTIBULE`. Then a second route appeared in gray, older and narrower. `MAINTENANCE LADDER WELL / NOT PUBLIC EGRESS / STATUS UNKNOWN.` Celia whispered, "There was a ladder well." Every face turned to her. She looked at Nora first, as if asking permission to be useful again and knowing she had no right to receive it. Nora did not nod. She did not forgive. She only kept watching. Celia continued. "It was for staff after the old breakfast room renovation. Blue archive chase to B2 return vestibule. It should have been sealed when the side terminal was updated." The egress map printed `LOCAL STATEMENT CROSS-REFERENCE: MAINTENANCE LADDER WELL LEGACY ROUTE.` Counsel swore under his breath. Dorsett's pen caught it anyway. The utility lift call pulsed again. `B2 RETURN VESTIBULE READY.` The lift was not moving the case yet. It was preparing the place where the case could be received if the stair door failed, if the ladder well opened, if the public witness blinked. Lina turned to Corbett. "We need the B2 receiving point preserved before they stop trying the visible door and use the ladder well." Pell answered with the practical speed of someone who had accepted the shape of the emergency. "Court visitor request: preserve B2 return vestibule exterior, utility lift call status, and maintenance ladder well state. No sealed drawer. No audio. No content." Corbett concurred. Ravel relayed to Keene. Harrow pressed her free hand to her chest and kept herself upright without the card now. Grant held Nora's page where the camera could see `ROUTE HIDES HAND`. The egress panel gave them one more line, quieter than the alarm and more dangerous because it sounded like procedure. `B2 RETURN VESTIBULE CAMERA AVAILABLE TO AUTHORIZED REVIEW CUSTODY ONLY.` Then, before counsel could claim it, the public map added a live status field from the lift call itself: `RECEIVER WAITING.` Lina felt the morning drop through the floor. "Receiver who?" she asked. The panel did not give a name. It gave a silhouette class, exterior-only, enough to make the next route unavoidable. `RECEIVER CLASS: FAMILY LIAISON / BLUE HANDLE ACCEPTANCE.` Celia's face went white. Nora wrote one word, huge and uneven. `DOWN.`
