Chapter 042: Celia Uses the File Celia did not move at first. The blue route insert trembled in her hands, not enough for anyone outside the room to call it shaking, enough for Lina to see the old training fighting the new shame. Behind Celia, Maris Bell stood with her paused observer form closed against her chest, and Nora lay under the narrow window she had named for herself, watching the woman who had once put blue tabs into trust binders and called it kindness. The system still held the last line from the insert like a challenge no one wanted to touch: `BINDER FILE 4C - FAMILY LIAISON WINDOW NAMES / CARE ACCESS EXCEPTIONS / BOARD PREP BLUE DRAWER / ACTIVE COPY.` Lenora Ash found her voice before Celia found her feet. "Celia, you will not leave that room with a family liaison work file." The speaker made the order sound cleaner than it was. It stripped out the fear, the fatigue, the way Celia flinched when her own name came through Lenora's mouth. Saye stepped toward the Board Prep link as if the door was already his to protect. "Board Prep is restricted. No one enters or retrieves anything under patient-rights observation without counsel review." "Then counsel can watch," Lina said. She kept her phone wide, not hunting for drama, not giving anyone a close-up they could call harassment. Nora, Celia, Maris, Dorsett, the blue insert, the south-hall feed, and the east service screen all stayed in the same frame. "The file was just identified by your route insert. If it controls the observer's form, it is not a private board convenience." Celia swallowed. "It is in the blue drawer under prep packets." Saye said, "You do not know that." "I signed the drawer log," Celia said, and the sentence made her look younger rather than stronger. "Not the contents. The drawer. Lenora told me active copies stayed there until external route conflicts resolved." She looked at Maris Bell. "If your form came from the same route, the active copy is still there." Maris did not answer quickly. Her eyes had left Nora only once, to look at the blue insert, and since then she had seemed to be building a new professional self out of pieces the old form had not prepared her to hold. "If my form is derived from that file," she said, "I will not finish observation until the derivation is disclosed." Counsel's voice sharpened. "Observer Bell, you are exceeding your temporary function." Dorsett raised one hand, palm outward, not to silence counsel but to mark the sentence for the export log. "Temporary function now conflicts with source dependency. Observer's statement preserved." He turned to Celia. "Ms. Rusk, do you have current lawful access to the drawer?" Celia looked toward the Board Prep door on the side monitor. Its threshold had been a background wound since the orange packet. Now it seemed to breathe. Keene's east-service camera picked up two Ash Trust guards beyond the privacy screen, one still testing the hold, the other speaking into a shoulder mic with his body turned away from the room. Board Prep itself remained closed, the blue status light above the interior latch steady and calm. "I have a family-liaison access card," Celia said. "It opens the outer prep lock, not sealed board contents." "We do not need sealed contents," Lina said. "We need the active copy location and exterior chain." Celia's eyes went to Nora. "If I open that drawer, they will say I breached you." Nora's hand moved on the blanket. Grant bent before anyone told him to, his ear close to her mouth, his fingers loose so she could press once, twice, stop, and press again. When he lifted his head, his voice had steadied around the words because Nora had given him something exact to carry. "She says, 'Not mine. Theirs.'" The room understood it before the system did. Nora was not releasing a medical secret. She was refusing to be used as the lock on a file built about her names. Lina felt the sentence pass through the glass, through Celia, through Maris Bell's closed folder. Dorsett repeated it for the record. "Patient states file is not hers, but theirs." Oren moved to the Board Prep threshold view. "I can request exterior-only drawer authentication from the room console if Celia presents current access. No content open. It will show drawer, file spine, custody label, and last active-copy movement." Saye crossed the room fast enough that Ravel shifted. "No." Ravel did not put a hand on him. He only stepped between Saye and the console with the patience of someone who knew exactly how a shove would look later. "Director, do not interfere with a court visitor preservation request." "This is not preservation. This is theft by family pressure." Lina's anger rose, and she used the phone to contain it. "Family pressure is the file teaching an observer to write silence while my mother is in view." Celia moved then. Not toward Lina, and not toward the door. She moved to the small table where the witness strips, the W-3 cartridge sleeve, the sealed phone, and Dorsett's export receipt had gathered into the morning's ugly altar. She laid the blue route insert beside them, flat, smoothing the fold with her thumb until the wax stain marked the margin. "I need this logged first," she said. "Not as mine. As source route." Dorsett opened a new exterior-source field. Oren paired the insert with the observer form corner and the Board Prep drawer path. The system accepted the link with a small delay, then printed a line everyone could read without leaning closer: `BLUE ROUTE INSERT ENTERED AS SOURCE ROUTE / CONTENTS NOT OPENED.` Under it, a second line appeared: `ACTIVE COPY LOCATION CHALLENGE AVAILABLE.` Lenora's speaker cut in at once. "Celia, if you authenticate that drawer, Ash Trust will treat it as a knowing disclosure of privileged family strategy." Celia's hand stopped on the access card clipped inside her jacket. For a moment Lina thought the threat had reached the old place in her where obedience had once looked like survival. Then Celia unclipped the card. The plastic snapped free with a small, ordinary sound. "It was never family strategy when it renamed a patient's window," she said. Maya checked Nora's monitor. "Nora is alert. Pulse elevated but stable. We keep movement away from her and use the remote exterior view." Lale tried to take refuge in that. "Her pulse is elevated because this is too much." "Her pulse is elevated because people keep asking her body to hide what your room is doing," Maya said. She did not look at him, which made the answer harder to turn into a debate. Oren sent the request. The Board Prep monitor opened a flat gray box: `PRESENT ACCESS CARD AT OUTER PREP READER.` Keene's camera caught the matching reader beside the Board Prep door, just beyond the east-service hold. The guard closest to it moved at once. "Hold," Keene said, and this time his voice carried the edge of command. "Step away from the reader." The guard did not step away. He put two fingers over the reader as if blocking a label on a bottle. "Ash Trust protective hold." Ravel spoke into his radio. "Protective Services obstructing exterior-source authentication during active patient-rights conflict. Badge visible. Preserve." The guard's hand lifted half an inch. That was enough. Celia walked toward the threshold with Ravel on one side and Dorsett on the other, not touching her, not escorting her as if she were being forgiven. Lina stayed back by Nora because the point was not Celia's redemption. The point was the file. She kept Celia in the edge of the frame and Nora at the center. Maris Bell followed two steps behind, observer form closed, face pale now in a way that looked less like fear than recognition. At the door, Celia held up the card. "Celia Rusk, family liaison, limited exterior drawer authentication." Counsel said, "Object to characterization." Dorsett answered, "Noted. Proceeding exterior-only." Celia touched the card to the reader. The blue status light blinked once, turned amber, and the room display filled with a drawer map instead of a door release. `BOARD PREP BLUE DRAWER / ACTIVE COPY INDEX.` The system did not open the drawer. It showed a schematic, a time stamp, and a list of file spines caught by the drawer camera after the last close. Oren enlarged the line without selecting contents. The spine label was visible in block type: `4C - FAMILY LIAISON WINDOW NAMES / CARE ACCESS EXCEPTIONS.` Beneath it, smaller text named three active tabs: `CW-4 MOTHER WINDOW`, `NON-OBJECTION OBSERVER ROUTE`, and `EXTERNAL AUTHORITY BED-SIDE CONFIRMATION.` Grant made a sound like he had been hit. "Bedside confirmation was inside their file before Maris ever came in." Maris stared at the third tab. "My temporary packet did not include that." "It included what they needed you to see," Lina said. The drawer map updated before anyone touched another key. `LAST ACTIVE COPY MOVEMENT: 09:07:43 / USER: C.RUSK FAMILY LIAISON / WITNESS: ASH HEALTH COUNSEL / DESTINATION: BOARD PREP BLUE DRAWER.` Celia closed her eyes. "I did not read it." Lenora answered softly, which was worse. "No, Celia. You followed instructions. That is why you should stop before you turn a ministerial act into a breach." Celia opened her eyes again and looked through the glass toward Nora. "A ministerial act put the word Mother on her window." Oren said, "There is a second movement line." He did not touch it. The system pulled it into view because Dorsett's challenge had requested the custody chain, not contents. `DERIVATIVE PACKET GENERATED: 09:08:11 / CW-4 NON-OBJECTION OBSERVER ROUTE / RECIPIENT: HARBORLIGHT PATIENT RIGHTS TEMP ACCESS / HANDOFF: VPR PATIENT RIGHTS DESK.` A matching hash appeared beside Maris's paused form. The observer looked down at the folder against her chest as if it had gained weight. "That is my packet." Dorsett marked the hash. "Observer packet derivative confirmed exterior-only." Saye shifted tactics. "Even if the file exists, it does not establish misuse. Family liaison exceptions can help disoriented patients accept care environments." Nora's eyes went cold. She did not have the strength for a speech, but she had enough for one movement. She lifted her hand from the blanket and pointed, not at Celia or the screen, but at the window. Grant bent. Nora made him wait through two breaths before she gave him the words. "She says, 'I accepted a room. Not a name for silence.'" Maris Bell's face broke then, not into tears, not into confession, but into duty arriving late. She stepped forward to the threshold line and held out her closed folder to Dorsett. "I request that my packet be held with the source-route conflict. I will not mark non-objection." Counsel said, "You have no authority to surrender patient-rights material to a court visitor." Maris did not lower the folder. "Then I request joint hold. Patient in view. Source conflict in view. Derivative hash in view." She looked at Nora. "I am sorry." Nora did not answer her. That, too, was a choice. The room display accepted the request in pieces. `OBSERVER DERIVATIVE PACKET JOINT HOLD REQUESTED.` Then: `PATIENT-NAMED WINDOW CONFLICT ACTIVE.` Then a red-bordered interruption cut across the lower half of the screen: `USER ACCESS CHANGE PENDING / O.PIKE BOARD PREP VIEWER ROLE UNDER REVIEW.` Oren's fingers froze above the console. Keene saw it on the Board Prep door panel at the same moment. The blue drawer map dimmed by one shade. "Someone is cutting his access." Oren did not curse. That frightened Lina more than if he had. "My viewer role was stable when Celia authenticated. Review request is coming from Board Prep admin." "Name the admin," Lina said. The system refused with a gray box: `ADMIN ID MASKED / TRUST PROTECTIVE REVIEW.` The drawer map flickered again, and the visible file spine blurred at the edges. Celia stepped closer to the reader, as if her body could hold open a permission channel. "Use my card." "Your card opened the exterior index," Oren said. "It will not preserve my viewer role if they revoke the session." Dorsett moved fast, selecting the only field still bright. "Court visitor emergency snapshot. Exterior-only. No contents." The system asked for a reason. He typed without flourish: `SOURCE ROUTE DERIVATIVE OBSERVER PACKET / PATIENT-NAMED WINDOW CONFLICT / ACCESS CUT IN PROGRESS.` Lenora's speaker came live again, but this time she was not speaking to Celia. "Mr. Pike's access to Board Prep was temporary technical accommodation. It can be reviewed." "During the exact minute the file route opens?" Lina asked. Nora's monitor gave a soft warning tone, not an alarm, just enough to pull Maya's hand to the rail and Grant's eyes to his mother. Nora was still watching the screen. Not Oren. Not Lenora. The file spine. Lina understood then that the chapter of the morning had never been about getting inside the file. It was about proving why they were terrified of even the label. The emergency snapshot bar crawled across the display. Twenty percent. Forty. The blue drawer map dimmed again. At sixty, Oren's name disappeared from the viewer field and was replaced by `ROLE SUSPENDED PENDING TRUST PROTECTIVE REVIEW.` The image held for half a second, long enough to show `4C`, `CW-4`, `NON-OBJECTION`, `BED-SIDE CONFIRMATION`, Celia's 09:07 movement, and the derivative packet hash. Then the Board Prep view went black. Dorsett's printer spoke before anyone else could. A single exterior snapshot slid into the tray with a receipt line at the bottom: `EMERGENCY SNAPSHOT ACCEPTED / VIEWER ROLE SUSPENDED AFTER CAPTURE.` Ravel took one side of the paper. Maris Bell took the other without being asked, her paused form still trapped under her arm. Celia stood with her access card in her hand, looking at the black screen she had opened too late and just in time. On the blank Board Prep monitor, a new message appeared in white letters: `OREN PIKE ACCESS REMOVED / BOARD PREP REVIEW ONLY.` The east-service guard lowered his hand from the reader. Lenora said nothing. That silence told Lina the snapshot had landed where it mattered. Nora's eyes closed, then opened again. Grant bent close and listened. When he looked up, he did not smile. "She says, 'Now he loses access.'" The system answered as if it had been waiting to make the next threat official: `TECHNICAL VIEWER LOCKOUT COMPLETE / EXTERNAL ROUTE STILL CONFLICTED.` Lina kept recording the black screen, the snapshot in Ravel's and Maris's hands, and Celia's card still held out uselessly toward the reader. The chapter of proof had narrowed to one sheet before the door closed, but one sheet was enough to change the next fight. Oren no longer had the Board Prep view. The file route was no longer invisible. Between those two facts, Lenora had chosen the loss she feared less, and Lina knew Chapter 043 would have to begin with the person they had just cut off.
