Chapter 023: Therapy Wing Glass The hand behind the glass did not wave. It rose to shoulder height and held there, fingers spread against the frosted light like a patient waiting for someone to say her name. For one long second Conference A forgot its own rules. Counsel stopped speaking. Lale's mouth remained open on a clinical objection he had not yet chosen. Celia's hand closed around the back of Nora's chair as if the wood could steady her better than Nora ever had. Lina kept the phone steady because she had learned, in one morning, that fear tried to borrow the hand first. The frame held Nora's bare wrist on Grant's palm, the torn `NV-1207` bracelet strap in the evidence sleeve, the panel line tying the board preview cache to Therapy Wing Glass, and the pale figure beyond the privacy partition. If she moved even two inches too far toward the figure, the room would get to argue whether she had abandoned the patient. If she stayed only on Nora, the figure would become rumor. She widened the frame until it hurt her thumb and said, "Mr. Dorsett, for the record, the privacy glass has changed state without anyone in Conference A requesting it." Dorsett's pen scraped. "Observed. Time?" Oren looked at the hearing-room clock and then at the panel's tiny status light. "Conference A clock says 10:27:41. Panel event clock says 10:27:39. Glass state changed after bracelet visual-pair confirmation." Lale found his voice inside the answer. "Clinical therapy spaces have privacy controls. No one is authorized to capture patient imagery through that partition." Lina asked, "Then who authorized the board preview cache at 09:16:32?" The question landed cleanly enough that Lale did not answer it. Saye spoke instead from the doorway, hard and low. "Kill the partition feed. Now." Ravel moved before the security aide beside Saye could reach the wall plate. He did not touch the aide; he planted himself between the plate and the aide's hand. "No one clears a live visual tied to an evidence print." Saye said, "This is not your jurisdiction." Ravel did not move. "It became my scene when your lift strap arrived under custody and your wall printed an evidence trail in front of a court visitor." The silhouette behind the glass shifted. Not toward them. Sideways. Its raised hand slid along the frosted panel, and the movement made the image worse, not clearer. The figure seemed both close and not close, body angled wrong for a person standing directly behind the partition. A second line of light appeared behind the shoulder, a rail reflection, and Lina understood why Oren had said node instead of camera. The glass was not simply showing a room. It was catching a corridor. Nora made a sound. It was not a word, not quite. Grant bent so quickly that Maya lifted a hand in warning, but Nora was already moving her fingers against his palm. Grant's face changed letter by letter. He looked up at Lina, then at the glass, then down at Nora again as if a wrong answer might injure her more than the bracelet had. Grant said, "She says, 'Too tall.'" Maya repeated it for Dorsett. "Patient communicates: too tall." Celia snapped, "Nora cannot judge height from a blurred reflection." Nora's eyes turned to Celia with such exhausted clarity that Celia flinched. Grant waited, his thumb still. Nora's fingers moved again, slower this time because fatigue had begun pulling at her hand. "Not my shoulder," Grant said. His own voice failed on the last word. "She says, 'Not my shoulder.'" Lina moved the phone a fraction, enough to catch Nora's face without losing the glass. "Nora, if you want us to compare the figure to you without touching you, blink once." Nora blinked. Lina looked to Maya. "Can you do it from visible points?" Maya swallowed. "Approximate only. Shoulder height, head position, arm reach. No contact." She stepped into the frame beside the bed, hands visible, and spoke toward Nora before she spoke to the room. "Your bed rail is at fixed height. Your shoulder, seated reclined, is below the top of Grant's forearm. The silhouette's shoulder is higher than yours would be if you were standing unsupported. The raised arm is longer, or the figure is nearer the glass than the patient bed track would allow." Counsel said, "Objection to clinical speculation." Torr had gone very still, and that stillness carried more anger than shouting. "Then measure the room. Therapy Wing Glass has a handrail on both sides and a corner mirror above the mobility rail. If that reflection is from the therapy corridor, it has floor stripes and rail screws. If it is a cached observation, it has a source time and a source node. If it is neither, then someone is projecting a patient image into a hearing room." Oren was already at the service cabinet, but he did not open it. He looked at Ravel first. "I need permission to read the glass controller without changing state." Ravel looked to Dorsett. Dorsett said, "Read only. State aloud before each action." Oren knelt with both hands above the cabinet latch. "Opening Conference A privacy-glass controller cover. No reset. No clear. Looking for node label and preview-cache source." He lifted the cover. A small blue service light woke inside, and Saye hissed something under his breath from the doorway. Lina caught the hiss on audio. "Director Saye objects." Saye said, "I object to unqualified tampering with patient privacy infrastructure." Dorsett answered, "Then send qualified staff who will not clear it." No one moved. That was its own answer. Oren read the label inside the cover. "`TG-OBS-2 / THER-WING GLASS / BOARD PREVIEW MIRROR`. There is a local cache status. It says `HOLD PENDING PRIVACY REVIEW`." His finger hovered, not touching. "And there is an active remote clear request." Adeline's voice came through the panel before anyone asked for her. "Conference A, VPR bridge has a privacy hold request from clinical director authority. Board preview mirror contains patient therapy footage and cannot be held by family video." Lina kept filming. "Ms. Crow, the patient in the room has said the figure is not her." Adeline answered, "Family interpretation of patient gestures is not a valid visual release." Grant's head lifted. "Then stop using family interpretation to put my hand on her rest mode." The line hissed. Nora's fingers moved again. Grant bent close. The room had grown so quiet that Lina could hear the plastic evidence sleeve settle on the table. Nora tapped once against Grant's palm, then drew a weak line with one finger, then tapped twice. Grant frowned, trying to follow, and Nora's frustration broke through her face. She reached with her other hand toward the glass, failed, and Maya caught the motion before the hand dropped. Maya said softly, "Not toward. She is pointing to reflection angle." Oren looked up. "The therapy corridor mirror could show the service chase door behind the person, not just the therapy hall." At the phrase service chase, Saye's aide shifted again. Ravel saw it. "Stay where you are." Lale stepped in front of Lina's phone. "Enough. Nora is tired. She is being forced to participate in a spectacle." Lina did not lower the phone. She moved around him, slow enough not to jostle the frame. "Nora was forced into a spectacle at 09:16:32 when the board preview cache said her bracelet matched a visual that she says was not her. We are not clearing the only thing that can answer that." Celia's voice changed then. It softened, and Lina hated it because she knew that softness. "Grant, look at her. She is shaking. You know what this hall was to her. Therapy wing meant pain, humiliation, learning to stand when she could not. She would not want strangers staring at a reflection of her weakest moments." Grant looked at Nora, not at Celia. "Do you want us to stop?" Nora blinked twice. Maya said, "Patient indicates no." Grant's shoulders dropped with the force of the answer. "Then don't use mercy as a curtain." The silhouette moved again, and this time the raised hand lowered. A bright vertical crack appeared at the figure's side. Oren made a sharp sound. "Service chase door. The glass is reflecting the therapy corridor and the chase door together. Someone is between the mirror and the chase threshold." Lina asked, "Can you freeze it?" Oren looked into the cabinet. "Not without touching state. But I can read the source chain. There is a print port." Saye said, "No." Dorsett said, "Yes. Read-only print, witnessed." Oren's hands were shaking by the time he pulled the narrow paper tongue from the slot. He did not tear it until the machine stopped. "Printing source chain for current display and linked 09:16:32 cache. No clear command entered." He tore the strip and laid it on the table beside the bracelet sleeve, not covering the strap. Lina zoomed just enough to catch the lines as he read. "`CURRENT DISPLAY: TG-OBS-2 MIRROR LIVE / STATE FORCED BY BOARD PREVIEW CACHE CONFLICT.` `LINKED CACHE: 09:16:32 / THER-WING GLASS / VISUAL PAIR CONFIRMED.` `BRACELET ID: NV-1207.` `SKIN CONTACT: ACCEPTED AT NODE PROXIMITY.`" Oren stopped. "That is not the same as skin contact present. It says accepted at node proximity." Torr said, "Read the next line." Oren did. "`PATIENT FACE: OCCLUDED.` `HAND/SHOULDER: SUBSTITUTE CONFIDENCE 64.`" For a moment no one understood the number. Then Nora made a broken, furious sound in the bed, and Maya's eyes filled despite herself. "Substitute confidence," Lina repeated. She made herself say it plainly. "The system had only sixty-four percent confidence on a hand and shoulder, with the face occluded, and still paired Nora's bracelet identity to it." Adeline's voice came through the panel, sharper now. "That language is internal algorithmic assistance and not clinical conclusion." Dorsett said, "But it was enough for the board preview." Adeline answered, "The board preview was a safety placeholder." Ravel asked, "A placeholder for whom?" No answer came from VPR. The silhouette beyond the glass shifted backward, and a second shape appeared for a flash in the reflected corridor: not a full body, just a forearm in a dark sleeve reaching from the service-chase side toward the figure's elbow. Lina almost missed it. Nora did not. Her eyes fixed on the glass, and her fingers dug into Grant's hand with sudden strength. Grant said, "There. She sees someone there." Lina steadied the frame. "I saw an arm from the service-chase side." Counsel said, "Speculation." Ravel said, "I saw movement at the chase edge." Keene, still near the doorway, added, "Dark sleeve. Left side of reflection." Celia whispered, "No." The word had a shape. Not denial for Nora. Recognition. Lina turned the phone just enough to catch Celia's face. Celia's eyes were not on Nora and not on the strip. They were on the side of the glass where the dark sleeve had appeared. Dorsett noticed too. "Ms. Rusk, do you recognize the person reflected?" Celia's mouth tightened. "I recognize a violation of my mother-in-law's dignity." Dorsett said, "That was not the question." Lale moved toward Nora's bed. "Her heart rate is rising." Maya blocked him with her body, small but absolute. "I am monitoring her. You do not get to touch her after arguing that a sixty-four percent shoulder could stand in for her body." The panel printed without request. `REMOTE CLEAR IN 00:15 / PRIVACY DIRECTOR AUTHORITY`. Oren cursed under his breath and then bit it off. "Remote clear countdown." Ravel turned to Saye. "Cancel it." Saye's face emptied. "I did not send that countdown." Adeline's voice came back, all route-desk calm. "Privacy director authority can be delegated through VPR bridge during patient-safety exposure." Lina asked, "Delegated to whom?" The panel did not answer. The countdown continued. `00:12`. `00:11`. Nora's hand moved against Grant's. He struggled to read because she was going fast now, spending strength she did not have. "Blue..." He stopped. "No. Not blue. Glue? Glass." Nora blinked once. Grant listened with his hand. "Glass aide." Torr's head snapped toward the service-chase reflection. "Therapy aide?" Nora blinked once. Maya said, "Patient indicates yes." The countdown reached eight. Oren stared into the controller cabinet. "There is an emergency local hold, but it will alter state. If I press it, it records me as interfering." Lina did not look away from the glass. "Will it preserve the cache?" Oren said, "It should hold current display and source chain." Dorsett said, "Under court visitor observation, local preservation hold authorized for evidence preservation only." Oren pressed the small recessed tab with the back of a capped pen. The panel shrieked. The glass flashed from frosted white to amber, then to a clearer, colder gray. The countdown stopped at `00:05`. A printed line crawled out: `LOCAL EVIDENCE HOLD / COURT VISITOR OBSERVED / REMOTE CLEAR BLOCKED`. The image sharpened not enough to make it merciful, but enough to make it useful. The silhouette was turned three-quarters away from the room, one shoulder lifted too high, one hand spread against the glass. The bracelet strap, or something shaped like it, hung loose below the wrist rather than touching skin. Behind the figure, at the service-chase edge, a second person leaned close enough to guide the elbow into position. The second person's face remained outside the reflected angle, but a badge lanyard swung forward, catching the amber light for one readable instant. Lina zoomed before the room could breathe. The lanyard showed a narrow white card with two words printed in clinic blue: `THERAPY AIDE`. Below it, half hidden by the swinging clip, was a name. Not all of it. Enough: `C. RUS--`. Celia reached for the table. Ravel caught her wrist before her fingers touched the evidence strip. Nora closed her eyes once, then opened them and looked at Lina. Not pleading. Commanding. Lina kept the phone on the glass, the lanyard, the loose bracelet shape, and Celia's stopped hand. "The therapy-wing access person was close enough to position the wrong visual," she said. "And the badge begins with C. Rus." The wall behind the glass clicked. Somewhere beyond it, a service-chase lock released.
