I barely had time to catch my breath as the icy wind cut across the frozen lake. The car’s tires screeched against the slippery surface, and for a terrifying moment, I swore the ice beneath us would give way entirely. “Hold on!” Kai shouted, his hands tight on the wheel, eyes darting between the approaching headlights and the thin, cracking ice below us. My heart hammered like it wanted out of my chest, and in that moment, I realized this wasn’t just about proving the truth anymore—it was about survival. Bianca sat in the back, clutching her phone and the backup drive with Tyler’s full footage. Her knuckles were white, and her usual smug, self-assured expression had melted into panic. I wanted to reach back and reassure her, but my own hands were trembling as I gripped the edge of the seat. “Why did it have to end up like this?” I whispered, mostly to myself, but I think Kai heard me. The ice groaned beneath the weight of the car. A jagged crack zigzagged across the surface, and for a second, it felt like the lake itself was swallowing us whole. “NOW!” Kai yelled, jerking the wheel sharply toward the small cabin at the lake’s edge. I flung open my door, slipping as I jumped onto the ice, Bianca following closely behind. The car tilted, half of it already in the freezing water, headlights flickering as the engine died. My stomach lurched—I could see the evidence, Tyler’s time capsule, and our chance to finally reveal the truth slipping into the depths. As we ran toward the cabin, the crunch of snow and ice behind us told a story I didn’t want to hear. Men in dark jackets, sent by Bianca’s father, were gaining ground. Panic clawed at my chest, but then—out of nowhere—my mother’s voice rang clear and commanding. “Chloe! Stop!” I skidded to a halt, heart in my throat, eyes narrowing at her figure framed by the dim moonlight. She wasn’t angry. Not in the way I had expected. She was calm, but her presence alone made every muscle in my body tense. “Mom?” I asked, incredulous. “How…how do you know we’re here?” Her gaze was steady, sharp. “I know everything. Your father’s been tracking your phone. But don’t think I came to stop you. I came to help.” She stepped aside, revealing her hands, holding nothing but authority. “I’m a judge, Chloe. I need solid evidence to act. Bianca’s video isn’t enough—we need the original files. Tyler’s time capsule at the ski run’s start—that’s where you’ll find what you need.” My mouth went dry. I wanted to argue, to tell her we were too late, that the ice could swallow us, but her calm determination forced me to listen. “You’ve suspected him for years,” I whispered, almost to myself. “And you stayed silent?” Her eyes softened slightly, the weight of all her choices visible in the moonlight. “I stayed silent for you, for your stability. I had to protect your life, Chloe. I kept my doubts buried until Tyler’s death. Now it’s time for truth. I can’t shield you anymore—not completely.” Kai stepped closer, his voice low but intense. “There’s a metal box, right? A time capsule? Tyler left it for you.” His eyes met mine, and for the first time, I felt the full weight of his loyalty. “We can get it. We have to.” Before I could respond, a crash echoed behind us. The men had reached the cabin. My mother positioned herself in front of the doorway, her posture unyielding, almost regal. “I am a judge,” she said, her voice steady. “If you enter, you do so knowing I could press charges for illegal entry. Now leave. Or face the consequences.” The men hesitated, confusion and fear flashing across their faces. Finally, they retreated, muttering under their breath. My mother turned to me, holding out a set of car keys. “Go. Get the evidence. I’ll hold your father off. The choice is yours—your father or the truth. Your father or justice.” I swallowed hard, my chest tight, realizing this was more than just exposing the truth about Tyler’s death. This was a test, a final reckoning for me, and my mother had just given me the power to choose. I looked at Kai, then at Bianca, and finally at the dark expanse of ice leading to Tyler’s secret. My hands closed around the keys, and I felt a surge of resolve. This was it. No more running. No more pretending. Whatever happened next, we were going to finish what Tyler had started—and nothing, not even my father, would stand in our way. I took a deep breath, gripping the time capsule, and whispered, “For you, Tyler. We won’t fail.” Kai squeezed my shoulder, Bianca nodded, and together we vanished into the snowy night, racing toward the start of the ski run and the secrets it held, the echo of my mother’s words burning in my ears: justice or father, Chloe. Time to choose.
