Chapter 365: The Dead Camera The black square on Ethan's tablet did not behave like a broken feed. A broken camera snowed, froze, or dropped a maintenance banner. This one went dark in a single clean cut, as if someone had put a hand over Isabella's eye. "Hong Kong, status on freight corridor," Margaret said. Static answered first. Then the field lead came back in a lowered voice. "Camera H-K seventeen is dead. Zhang Wei was last seen thirty meters from the service lift. Local building security says the corridor door just opened from the inside." "Do not chase blind," Isabella said. Okafor looked up from Diop's detention order. "If he reaches street level, the supplement becomes harder." "If we expose the sealed route map, Olivia becomes easier," Isabella said. She could feel the plaza behind her, the press lights still burning, the victims waiting for the next proof that justice had not stopped at verdicts. "We use what he gives us in public." On the Hong Kong wall, Li Wei stood pinned between the locked east doors and two officers who had finally crossed the lobby. His polished face had lost its softness. Wang Wei's sedan remained blocked at the garage arm. Liu Wei had stopped staring at the camera and started speaking into his sleeve. "Li Wei is claiming diplomatic foundation immunity," the field lead said. "He says Pacific Education Foundation handles humanitarian scholarships." Catherine's video window brightened as if she had leaned closer to her screen. "I have fifty-seven family inquiries now tied to that foundation. Four came in after the east doors locked. One mother lists a child moved through Hong Kong in 2009 under a scholarship intake code." Richard's voice cut in from behind her. "The Asia matching team is live. They are asking whether to prioritize Pacific addresses over Ariston addresses." The easy answer would have been yes. The cruel answer would have been yes faster. Isabella watched the dead camera and forced herself not to take the bait. "No single-lane priority," she said. "Pacific gets emergency match tagging. Ariston stays live. If Zhang Wei opened a route, he may be using Boston movement as cover." Ethan slid the Boston feed beside Hong Kong. A gray-haired Ariston trustee walked out of a glass building with two lawyers and a rolling suitcase that did not fit a conference day. A black car waited at the curb, hazard lights blinking. "Boston field has eyes," Ethan said. "They can stop him for interview, but the warrant language is thinner than Hong Kong." "Then do not stop him for the old money," Isabella said. "Ask him about the education addresses." Margaret relayed it. In the feed, a woman in a navy coat stepped into the trustee's path and raised an identification folder. The trustee's lawyers moved first, trying to make a wall of wool coats and expensive anger. The Vienna alert flashed again. COORDINATOR CHANNEL: CABLE ROOM ACTIVE. Okafor swore softly. "That is not flight. That is a purge." The dead camera stayed black. Isabella pressed the earpiece deeper. "Hong Kong field lead, what is behind the freight corridor if Zhang Wei does not go down?" "Loading bay, server cage, private lift to eighth-floor records mezzanine," the lead said. "Building security says Pacific leased the mezzanine under an events subsidiary." Ethan's hand tightened around the tablet. "A records mezzanine gives him files, not an exit." "And a cable room in Vienna gives the coordinators time to erase relay logs," Okafor said. Li Wei raised both hands on the Hong Kong feed, not in surrender but in performance. The nearest officer hesitated because a lobby full of phone cameras had turned toward him. Li Wei understood optics. He smiled for them. "He is making them afraid to touch him," Margaret said. "Then make him answer a question he cannot smile through." Isabella turned to Catherine. "Read the 2009 mother. Not the child's name. The forwarding address." Catherine swallowed. Her screen reflected columns of names Isabella refused to expose. "Pacific Education Foundation, care of One Pacific Place, Suite 806. Intake code PEF-HK-17. Parent note says the child was promised a medical scholarship evaluation and never came home." The words reached the Hong Kong lobby through Margaret's relay a breath later. The field lead did not shout them. She repeated them in a low, official voice beside Li Wei, close enough for every phone to capture his reaction. Li Wei's smile failed. "Sir," the field lead said on the feed, "do you deny control of Suite 806?" His lawyer stepped forward. "My client will not answer press theater." "This is not press theater," the lead said. "It is an emergency detention execution under ICC supplement and local cooperation authority." The officer took Li Wei's wrist. The lobby erupted. Not cheers. Sound sharper than that: fear turning into record. Phones lifted. Wang Wei opened his car door in the garage and found two officers waiting at the concrete pillar. Liu Wei backed toward the lift and stopped when building security sealed it from the desk. "Three contained," Margaret said. "Chen Wei still moving outside. Zhang Wei unknown." Boston came alive at the same time. The Ariston trustee tried to shove past the navy-coated agent. One of his lawyers reached for the suitcase handle. The agent caught the motion and said something that made both lawyers freeze. Ethan enlarged the feed. "She used the Pacific address question." The trustee looked toward the car, then toward the suitcase. His face gave the answer before his mouth did. "Boston requests authority to secure the suitcase pending humanitarian-record preservation," Margaret said. "Granted by conduct," Okafor said. "I will get Diop on the line." Another Vienna alert arrived. CABLE ROOM DOOR OPEN. COORDINATOR UNIDENTIFIED. Then, at the edge of the Hong Kong display, the dead camera flickered back for half a second. Not enough for a face. Enough for a hand. Zhang Wei's hand held a black drive against the lens before the feed died again. White tape crossed the drive with three block letters written in marker: VIE. The plaza noise vanished inside Isabella. "He is not erasing Hong Kong," Ethan said. "He is moving Vienna," Isabella answered. Margaret's eyes found hers. "If we send Hong Kong into the mezzanine, we lose the street. If we redirect to Vienna, Zhang Wei may destroy Suite 806." Isabella looked at Li Wei in cuffs, at the Boston suitcase being taken from a lawyer's hand, at Catherine's family-inquiry counter climbing while mothers and fathers wrote into the system as if the world could finally hear them. The old Isabella would have tried to hold every door herself. Leah would have burned the secret route and lived with the damage. Isabella Voss had to choose what could be saved without selling the people who had trusted her. "Hong Kong seals the mezzanine and does not enter until a camera team is with them," she said. "Street team keeps Chen Wei visible. Boston secures the suitcase. Vienna gets the warning now." "What warning?" Okafor asked. Isabella touched Elena's locket once, then let it go. "Tell Vienna the drive is coming to them. Tell them the coordinator is not there to erase files. He is there to receive Zhang Wei's next route." On Ethan's tablet, the Vienna cable-room camera opened just as a man in a maintenance jacket looked up at the lens. He smiled as if he had been expecting her.
