📖 The Heiress Who Came Back from Death
Martha's Blue Transfer
Chapter 352: Martha's Blue Transfer
The Brooklyn marker turned federal blue before Patricia Walsh's transport had cleared the hidden lane, and Martha Thorne's name landed in The Hague courtyard like a sentence nobody had finished reading. Diana opened the new feed. Fluorescent light replaced hedges and steel gates. A detention corridor stretched across the tablet screen, narrow, white, and loud with keys. Somewhere ahead, an old woman in an orange jumpsuit had just been told Teacher D was already in custody.
Isabella did not touch the microphone. If she spoke too soon, Martha would become a headline. If she waited, the feed would show what the family had spent years refusing to show: not a matriarch in pearls, not the woman who had sat across banquet tables and decided who counted as blood, but an inmate with a prisoner number waiting for a second warrant.
"Agent Lisa Chang is at the cell block," Diana said. "Federal custody has accepted UNFGIB transfer authority pending transport."
Catherine's hand closed around the barricade rail. "She will try to sound noble."
"Let her," Isabella said. "Noble still records."
The feed steadied as Chang entered the corridor with two UNFGIB officers and a federal marshal. She carried the warrant flat against her chest, not raised for cameras. There were no guards to disarm, no gate to open, no lawyer at a glass door. Martha had already lost the public house, the Thorne rooms, the ability to summon servants and silence. What remained was more dangerous: the voice that had once turned crimes into family necessity.
Chang stopped before a reinforced cell door. Through the small window, Martha Thorne sat upright on the lower bunk. Her hair had thinned. Her hands trembled slightly against her knees. The orange fabric made her look smaller than Isabella remembered, but not weaker. When the marshal unlocked the door, Martha looked past Chang toward the body camera as if she had expected Isabella to be watching.
"Martha Thorne," Chang said, voice measured, "the United Nations Fourth Generation Investigative Body has an international arrest warrant following the ICC verdict of October twenty-ninth. You are wanted for additional crimes against humanity under Rome Statute Article Seven, conspiracy, and obstruction for your role as Fourth Generation operational coordinator executing hospital network expansion and baby theft operations."
The words moved through the courtyard and struck old wounds in order. Operational coordinator. Hospital network expansion. Baby theft operations. Catherine bowed her head. Richard did not. Ethan stood so close to Isabella that his sleeve brushed hers, but he did not touch her. This one had to be hers before it belonged to the coalition.
Martha rose slowly. The movement cost her; the camera caught the shallow pull of her breath, the way one hand pressed the wall before she straightened. Then her chin lifted.
"I heard Walsh," Martha said.
Chang did not react. "Then you understand the sequence."
"I understand Dr. Walsh has decided usefulness is survival." Martha's mouth curved without warmth. "She always did prefer corporate language."
The cruelty was still there. That was the first shock and, in a darker way, the first relief. Prison had not transformed Martha into a victim Isabella had to pity. Age had not erased the woman who authorized the machinery. The same mind was present, stripped of rooms but not of excuses.
Chang opened the warrant. "The legal basis is the ICC verdict establishing Fourth Generation baby theft as a crime against humanity. You are identified as an operational coordinator who authorized hospital network expansion, coordinated baby theft operations, and obstructed discovery of those operations."
"Hunt patriarch was convicted," Martha said. Her voice was rougher than Isabella remembered, but it carried. "On all crimes against humanity charges."
"Yes."
"Then the international framework is no longer theoretical." Martha looked at the camera again. "I do not contest UNFGIB authority to transport me to The Hague."
The courtyard tightened. Reporters shifted, hungry for the line that sounded like surrender. Isabella watched Martha's face instead. There was no fear there. Not enough. There was calculation, a last attempt to choose the shape of her own disgrace.
Chang stepped closer. "State whether you understand the charges."
"I understand the warrant alleges crimes against humanity under Article Seven, conspiracy, and obstruction," Martha said. "I understand the allegations concern my Fourth Generation coordinator role."
"Not allegations of role," Chang said. "The warrant cites records of authorization."
For the first time, Martha's eyes flicked down.
Isabella felt Catherine flinch beside her. Records of authorization had a weight family accusations never did. Martha could dismiss daughters, servants, heirs, investigators, even grief. She could not dismiss a warrant that had learned her verbs: authorize, expand, coordinate, obstruct.
Chang continued. "Do you acknowledge authorizing hospital network expansion connected to Fourth Generation baby acquisition targets?"
Martha's breath rasped once. The federal marshal's face remained blank, but the hand on his radio tightened.
"I authorized hospital network expansion," Martha said. "I authorized operational coordination that supported Fourth Generation placements."
"Baby theft operations," Chang said.
Martha's jaw set. "That is the prosecution's phrasing."
"It is the ICC's framework after conviction."
Silence filled the cell. In The Hague, the families at the barricade had stopped whispering. Isabella could hear a woman crying somewhere behind her, not loudly, just one breath breaking after another. Martha looked toward the camera again, and Isabella understood the choice in front of her. If she let Martha keep the softer phrase, every mother watching would hear another door close.
Isabella leaned toward Diana's tablet. "Say the words, Martha."
Diana did not need to relay it. The microphone near Isabella carried enough. Martha heard. The old woman's mouth tightened, and for an instant the cell shrank into a Thorne dining room, all those years of commands dressed as manners.
"Baby theft operations," Martha said at last.
The courtyard sound changed. Not a cheer. Not forgiveness. It was the sound of something pinned to the table after years of slipping away. Catherine covered her mouth with both hands. Richard closed his eyes. Ethan exhaled once, sharp and low.
Chang nodded to the marshal. "Martha Thorne, you will be transferred from federal detention to UNFGIB custody for transport to The Hague. Counsel access and medical needs will be documented. Any testimony offer will be addressed by the ICC prosecution team."
Martha extended her wrists before anyone asked. The gesture tried to claim dignity. The cuffs took it and made it evidence. When Chang secured them, Martha's hands trembled again, this time with no wall to hide against.
"I am prepared for final legal proceedings," Martha said. "I am prepared to testify regarding Fourth Generation operations."
"You will testify under oath if called," Chang replied. "You will not choose the record alone."
That was the reward Isabella had needed and had not known how to name. Martha could still speak, but she could no longer frame the room. Chang guided her into the corridor, orange fabric bright under the fluorescent lights, prisoner number visible, UNFGIB warrant folded in Chang's hand. The woman who had once treated stolen children as family logistics was now a transfer file moving toward The Hague.
At the courtyard microphones, Isabella finally spoke. "Martha Thorne has acknowledged the warrant and the words baby theft operations on record. She will be transported to The Hague under UNFGIB custody."
Diana's tablet vibrated before the sentence finished. Another black marker appeared, this one attached to no public city. Okafor's voice came through with more strain than before. "Sebastian Costa's team is at the residence. Four armed guards. Counsel is contesting jurisdiction. Olivia Cooper's evidence has been referenced at the door."
Isabella watched Martha disappear past the marshal's shoulder and felt the next fracture open inside the family map. "Then keep Olivia's name ready," she said. "Sebastian does not get to call this business coordination after his sister opened the files."
