Chapter 115: The Signer Conflict Judge Franklin did not let the room have the word signer. That was what made the title worse. If the technical officer had read a name, the hearing would have exploded in ordinary ways. Harrow would have objected. Anika would have asked for redaction. Miller would have asked for preservation. The court would have cut the name out of the air and put it behind seals. But title only was enough to create a thing no one could safely ignore. Renewal signer conflict. Elin wrote the words, then drew a line beneath conflict. The old machinery had always hidden behind divided tasks. One person wrote the instruction. One person certified implementation. One person processed the payment. One person preserved the archive. One person sent the notice. Each hand could say it had never closed around a throat. A signer conflict made the hand harder to divide. Harrow said, "My lord, I must insist that no query be made on that field until the representative-authority category statement is filed." "On what ground?" Judge Franklin asked. "Fairness. Privilege. The possibility that an administrative label may be misunderstood as a finding of professional misconduct." Anika Shah stood this time. "The label is not misconduct. It is a preservation field. If the court waits for a statement from the same authority environment that may be affected by the conflict, the statement may be shaped around an unpreserved fact." "That is an accusation." "No," Anika said. "It is why preservation law exists." Miller added, "We are not asking for signer identity. We are asking whether the conflict class affects notice, monitoring, support continuation, or statement reliability." Harrow turned on him. "You cannot keep dressing speculation as preservation." "I can when the system has already returned a current representative authority renewal source and a signer-conflict title." Judge Franklin looked to the technical officer. "What conflict classes can be safely queried?" The officer checked without typing into the live field. "Available broad classes only: capacity conflict, proceeding conflict, notice-recipient conflict, support-dependency conflict, and authority-chain mismatch. The system indicates one or more may return. No signer identity, no office name, no client matter, no service route, no content." Harrow said, "One or more is even more prejudicial." "It is less identifying," Anika said. Elin felt the cold intelligence of that. A single narrow answer might point straight to a person. A broad class could tell the court what danger to restrain without telling anyone whom to hunt. Adrian was silent beside her. He had been silent since the renewal source landed outside his surrender. His hands remained open on the table, as if he were making visible that he would not take back control because silence made him afraid. Judge Franklin said, "The court will query conflict class only. I will record again that no finding is made as to identity, personal fault, office responsibility, client responsibility, or privileged legal advice." Harrow rose. "My lord, if the result contains proceeding conflict, any reader will infer that current counsel are implicated." "Then the court will not publish the result beyond this sealed hearing." "We are in the hearing." "Yes," Judge Franklin said. "That is where preservation orders are made." The technical officer waited. Elin looked at Helena. The older woman had gone very still. Not frightened exactly. Listening to old architecture settle. Elin whispered, "You knew there could be a signer conflict." Helena did not look at her. "I knew they built the categories to avoid saying the same person had two jobs." "Which two?" Helena's throat moved. "The person who could renew support and the person who could receive the warning." Elin's stomach tightened. That was not a conflict of paperwork. It was a loop. Judge Franklin said, "Query." The officer typed. The return came faster than the renewal source had. "Conflict classes returned," he said. "Proceeding conflict. Notice-recipient conflict. Authority-chain mismatch." No one spoke. Elin wrote each class slowly. Proceeding conflict. Notice-recipient conflict. Authority-chain mismatch. The words formed a cage around the room. The renewal source came from current representative authority. The signer conflict touched the proceeding. It touched the party or office that would normally receive notice. And the authority chain did not match cleanly. Harrow said, "That could mean anything." Miller said, "It means the notice recipient may be too close to the signer." "It means nothing without definitions." Anika said, "Then the definitions should be preserved, not queried in detail." Judge Franklin nodded once. "Can definitions be preserved without display?" The officer checked. "Yes. Conflict-definition table, signer-capacity table, notice-recipient rule, and authority-chain mismatch rule can be hashed and sealed without display." "Do so." Harrow said, "My lord, that is a seizure of privileged firm architecture." "It is a preservation of non-content administrative classification tables. If any privileged material is encountered, it will be sealed unread and subject to later argument." "The court is taking architecture it does not understand." "The court is preserving architecture precisely because it does not yet understand it." Elin heard a tiny sound from the public benches, quickly swallowed. A breath, not a protest. Even behind closed restrictions, truth changed the air. Adrian said quietly, "My lord, may I clarify one risk?" Harrow made a sound of impatience. "Mr Vale is not a representative authority." "No," Adrian said. "But I know how the house used mismatch." Judge Franklin considered him. "Category only." "If the signer had one capacity for renewal and another capacity for notice, the system could claim no one was warning themselves. Renewal would say it belonged to support. Notice would say it belonged to representation. The same decision could wear two coats." Helena closed her eyes. Elin wrote two coats and hated the phrase because it sounded almost gentle. Anika said, "That supports preserving the capacity table before any category statement is filed." Harrow said, "It supports nothing. Mr Vale is speculating from family custom." "Family custom is one of the authority sources in the chain," Miller said. Judge Franklin held up a hand. "Enough." The technical officer said, "Preservation accepted. Definition tables hashed and sealed. Display remains conflict class only." "Good," Judge Franklin said. "Now the court must decide what happens to the representative-authority statement deadline." Harrow said, "It must be stayed." Anika said, "It must be kept, but narrowed." "To what?" "To category basis, support-continuation safety, and confirmation that no notice has issued or will issue." Miller said, "And a declaration that no signer, recipient, drafter, approver, administrator, associated service, or representative authority has altered, withdrawn, replaced, or retitled any relevant record since the non-notification order." Harrow laughed once. It was short and ugly because it had not meant to be laughter. "You are asking the accused mechanism to sign its own confession." The room heard the word before he could pull it back. Accused. Mechanism. Judge Franklin's expression did not change, but his pen stopped moving. "Mr Harrow," he said, "the court has accused no mechanism. You may wish to be careful with yours." Elin watched Harrow's face empty. For the first time since the hearing began, he looked not trapped but astonished that the trap had a shape. Judge Franklin dictated the narrowed order. Representative-authority statement due in forty-five minutes remained. It must address lawful basis by category, support-continuation safety under court seal, no-notice compliance, no-contact compliance, and record-integrity confirmation. It must not identify the protected family, any route, service, amount, account, employer, school, current surname, signer identity, or client legal advice. It must not trigger ordinary notice. It must be filed by a representative with authority to bind the current representative category for administrative preservation only. All internal drafts, withdrawals, failed submission attempts, retitling actions, and category changes stayed preserved. Harrow objected to every line. Judge Franklin recorded every objection. The officer entered the order. The archive accepted it. Then the screen refreshed without being asked. The officer went pale. Judge Franklin said, "Field title only." "Representative statement route," the officer read. Harrow said nothing. That silence told Elin more than another objection would have. The statement was not only required. The court would now have to decide who could file it without warning the very system it was meant to restrain. END
