The hearing room smelled like polished wood and fear. Rows of chairs filled with bodies that pretended neutrality—committee members with folders aligned too neatly, advisers with practiced expressions, students who whispered behind hands. At the front, beneath the university seal, sat the Dean. His jaw was set, his fingers steepled, his patience already thin. I walked in with my spine straight. Not because I wasn’t scared—but because I refused to look like a girl on trial. Nathan didn’t even look at me at first. Jake leaned back in his chair like this was a mock debate he’d already won. Olivia sat between them, hands clenched, lipstick too red for the occasion. Sophia stared at the floor. Zoe… Zoe wouldn’t stop shaking. “Let the record show,” the Dean began, “this hearing concerns allegations of systemic bullying, power abuse, and misconduct within Greek organizations—specifically Delta Brotherhood and its affiliates.” Nathan finally met my eyes. He smirked. That was his first mistake. “This is a witch hunt,” he said smoothly. “A coordinated attempt by a disgruntled applicant to retaliate after failing a fair evaluation.” I felt it before he finished speaking. The lie. It slid across my skin like oil, heavy and obvious. I didn’t interrupt. Not yet. The Dean nodded toward Zoe. “You requested to testify.” Zoe swallowed hard and stood. “I— I helped alter the video shown during the Claire Sisterhood evaluation. At Sophia’s request. Under pressure from Nathan.” Gasps rippled through the room. Nathan shot to his feet. “That’s absurd—” “Sit down,” the Dean snapped. Zoe’s hands trembled as she handed over a flash drive. “This contains the unedited footage. And screenshots of messages instructing me what to cut.” Olivia’s face went white. Chloe squeezed my knee beneath the table. Next came the messages—projected on the screen behind the committee. Olivia’s name. Nathan’s number. Discussions of favors. Internships. “Managing outcomes.” Olivia sobbed. “I didn’t think—” “That’s the problem,” Maya said quietly from beside me. “You did think. You just didn’t care who got hurt.” One by one, the girls stood. Voices cracked. Phones were passed forward. Screenshots of messages that never should have existed. Recordings that made the room feel smaller with every second. Jake laughed nervously. “This proves nothing systemic.” Clara stood. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t have to. “For sixty-two years,” she said calmly, placing a thick binder on the table, “Delta Brotherhood has been cited for harassment, intimidation, and financial irregularities. Settled quietly. Buried politely.” She flipped a page. “Until now.” The Greek adviser leaned forward. “Financial irregularities?” I felt it then. The pull. The memory clawing to be seen. My breath hitched—but I didn’t stop it. “I need permission,” I said. The Dean hesitated. Then nodded once. I closed my eyes. The room disappeared. I was somewhere else—dark, cramped, echoing with male laughter. Nathan’s voice. Jake’s. A locked office. Papers. A ledger. Numbers circled. A joke about donors being “useful idiots.” I opened my eyes. “They diverted charity funds,” I said evenly. “Through shell events. And they traded admissions influence for donations.” Jake surged forward. “That’s impossible—” I spoke again. Softer. “They called it ‘legacy lubrication.’” Silence fell like a blade. The Greek adviser stood abruptly. “We will be launching an immediate investigation. Effective now, Delta Brotherhood’s campus recognition is suspended.” Nathan collapsed back into his chair. For the first time, he looked small. The Dean exhaled slowly. “This hearing is adjourned pending further action.” The room erupted. Tears. Applause. Relief. I didn’t smile. Not yet. As we walked out into the sunlight, Chloe laughed and cried at the same time. Maya hugged Clara. Girls I’d never met mouthed thank you. I stood still. The power inside me settled—not fading, but steady. Justice wasn’t loud. It was thorough. And this? This was only the beginning.
