By the third night after Luke cracked, I stopped feeling like prey. Fear still lingered—tight, sharp, coiled in my chest—but beneath it was something new. Control. Not complete, not perfect, but growing. Like a pulse learning its own rhythm. The library smelled like dust and old paper, the kind of silence that made secrets feel louder. Chloe and I sat in the most secluded corner, pretending to study. My grandmother’s grimoire lay open beneath my notebook, its symbols faintly glowing when no one was looking. “Focus,” Chloe murmured. “Don’t push too hard.” I closed my eyes. The world shifted. At first, it was just noise—emotions brushing against me like static. Anxiety. Arrogance. Jealousy. Guilt. The deeper I breathed, the clearer it became, like tuning a radio. And then I felt it. Sharp. Tight. Wrong. I opened my eyes slowly and locked onto Zoe. She sat three tables away, hands clenched around her phone, eyes darting toward the staircase every few seconds. Her emotions slammed into me in a wave—panic, dread, and something colder beneath it. Fear of being exposed. “That’s her,” I whispered. Chloe followed my gaze. “You’re sure?” I nodded. “She’s drowning in guilt. And terror.” Minutes later, Sophia appeared, heels clicking softly against the marble floor. She leaned close to Zoe, whispering urgently. Zoe’s panic spiked so violently it made my head ache. They stood. We followed. They didn’t see us slip into the shadowed corridor behind the restricted archives. Zoe pulled a flash drive from her bag, hands shaking. “This is all that’s left,” Zoe said. “If anyone finds this—” “They won’t,” Sophia snapped. “Delete it. Now.” I stepped forward. “Or you could stop lying.” Both of them froze. Sophia spun around, eyes blazing. “You’re not supposed to be here.” “Neither are you,” I said calmly. “Destroying evidence tends to violate library policy. And ethics. And law.” Zoe’s emotions erupted—pure terror now. Her gaze flicked to the exit, to Sophia, back to me. “Elena,” she whispered. “Please—” “You’re scared,” I said softly. “Not of me. Of Nathan.” Sophia stiffened. Zoe sucked in a sharp breath. “He threatened your family,” I continued, the truth pouring out of her like heat against my skin. “Your brother’s scholarship. Your mother’s job. You thought helping him would keep them safe.” Zoe broke. “I didn’t want to,” she sobbed. “I swear. He said if I didn’t help Sophia switch the footage, he’d ruin them. I just— I was scared.” Sophia grabbed her arm. “Shut up!” Zoe yanked free, tears streaming. “No! I’m done!” She shoved the flash drive into my hand. “This is the original video. Unedited. You didn’t attack anyone. She—” Zoe pointed at Sophia. “She swapped the clips. Framed you.” Sophia’s composure shattered. “You think this fixes anything?” she hissed at me. “Nathan will bury you.” A slow clap echoed from behind us. “Well,” Maya said, stepping out of the shadows, phone raised. “That was dramatic.” Olivia followed, face pale. Nathan stood between them, fury radiating off him like heat. Maya tapped her screen. “Chat logs. Months’ worth. Olivia taking favors. Nathan pulling strings. Sorority placements. Internships.” Olivia lunged for the phone. “That’s fabricated!” “It’s timestamped,” Maya replied coolly. “And already backed up.” Nathan’s eyes locked onto mine. Calculating. Threatened. “You think you’ve won?” he asked quietly. I stepped closer, meeting his gaze. “No. I know I have.” The air shifted. Emotion surged through me—fear from Olivia, rage from Sophia, desperation from Nathan. I didn’t drown in it this time. I stood steady, anchored. “You used people like pieces,” I said. “And now they see you.” Sophia screamed, lunging for Zoe. Chloe moved instantly, blocking her. Campus security burst through the doors moments later. As they dragged Sophia away, Nathan leaned close. “This isn’t over.” I smiled faintly. “For you? It is.” Later, behind the sorority house, the night air felt lighter. Zoe cried apologies. Maya hugged her. Olivia was escorted out, her power gone in a blink. Chloe squeezed my hand. “You’re learning fast.” I looked down at the crest warm against my skin. “No,” I said softly. “I’m remembering who I am.” And for the first time since Weston decided my fate, I felt untouchable.
