Chapter Six: Anna’s Pity Play and My Father’s Return
The moment I stepped into the hospital, the sterile scent of antiseptic clawed at my senses. My mind was racing, heart hammering—not from fear, but from disbelief. There she was, lying in a crisp hospital bed, her hair slightly disheveled, eyes wide with what she wanted everyone to believe was pain. Anna. The woman who had schemed and manipulated her way through my life, now playing the tragic victim.
A cluster of cameras flashed outside her room. Reporters, hungry for scandal, were already spinning her “story.” I could hear snippets through the glass. “…a lapse in judgment…” “…begs Stella for forgiveness…” “…so repentant…”
My stomach turned. Part of me ached. That old, familiar tug of pity threatened to loosen my resolve. But I forced it down, inhaling sharply. This was Anna—she was performing, as she always did. I was not the gullible child I once was.
I took a step closer, intent on staying away, yet just close enough to see the fear she was faking, the tears she tried to summon on cue.
Jake’s hand on my wrist anchored me. “Don’t go in. She’s acting,” he murmured, voice steady, but his eyes were stormy. “Nothing she does is real. Not anymore.”
I wanted to argue, to step forward and confront her, yet the sight of her so fragile, so “injured,” made my chest ache. My fingers itched to reach for the doorknob, but Jake’s presence was a tether I couldn’t ignore.
And then, the door swung open.
David. My father. My real father. My anchor in a sea of lies. After years abroad, his return was like a gale-force wind blowing through the hospital room, scattering Anna’s carefully constructed illusions to dust. He didn’t pause, didn’t glance at her theatrics. His gaze was sharp, steady, unwavering.
“Anna,” he said, voice cold, clipped. No hesitation. No sympathy. “We need to talk.”
Anna’s fake pain faltered. For a moment, her composure cracked, revealing the terrified woman behind the mask. “David… I…”
He held up a folder. A thick stack of papers. His lawyer by his side, expression unreadable. “I’ve known everything,” David said, each word deliberate, each syllable a hammer striking at the foundation of her deceit. “What you did to Stella’s parents… how you manipulated her life… even the funds you moved from our accounts—you won’t get away with it.”
My stomach lurched. I felt the air leave the room, and yet, a strange, liberating calm washed over me. This was the moment justice finally had a voice.
Anna scrambled for a response, her voice trembling as if fear itself had gripped her throat. “David… I… it was an accident… I was… I only—”
He cut her off, waving the folder like a sword. “Don’t. Try. To. Lie.”
I stepped closer now, unable to stay back any longer. My legs moved of their own accord, drawn by the sense that the truth had finally arrived, walking through the door in the form of the man I had longed to call Dad.
David laid out every detail—the manipulated brake lines, the collusion with mechanics, the calculated moves that had endangered my life and stolen my parents’ futures. Each revelation was a dagger to Anna’s facade, piercing through the years of lies she had so carefully constructed.
I wanted to feel pity for her. Part of me even tried. But the reality was undeniable: this was the woman who had robbed me of my family, my trust, my childhood. And now, she was stripped bare.
Jake squeezed my hand, a silent reassurance that I didn’t have to face this alone. His eyes met mine, proud and protective, a reminder that I had allies in a world that had tried to isolate me.
Anna’s collapse was not graceful. Her voice broke, her words failed her, and the pretense dissolved. She sank back against the bed, eyes wide with panic and despair. “Stella… please…”
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. Justice didn’t need my words; it had arrived in the form of my father, in the documents he held, in the unwavering truth that could no longer be denied.
Lawyers spoke in clipped, precise tones, outlining the legal consequences that Anna would now face, each sentence a weight pressing down on the air of pity she had tried to cultivate.
And I? I felt a strange serenity, as if a storm had passed through my life, tearing away the last remnants of manipulation and deceit. The woman who once haunted my dreams was now exposed, powerless, and I could finally breathe.
I glanced at David, his eyes softening just a fraction as they met mine. “You’re safe now,” he said.
For the first time in years, I believed him. And for the first time in years, I allowed myself to feel… free.
