Sebastian’s study was the only room in the mansion that ever felt alive. Not warm—never warm—but alive in the way a predator’s den is alive: humming with quiet threat, vibrating with unspoken rules. Isla stepped inside, the door clicking shut behind her like the beginning of a trap. Sebastian didn’t look up immediately. He sat behind the mahogany desk, sleeves rolled to his elbows, fingers ink-stained from signing documents. A cup of untouched tea cooled beside him. He looked…normal. Infuriatingly, disarmingly normal. For a moment, she watched him. Observed the curve of his brow as it furrowed over some ledger, the way he exhaled softly when annoyed, the absent gesture of running a thumb across his lower lip while thinking. A man. An ordinary man. Not the monster who’d locked her in gilded rooms. Not the captor who decided when she slept, ate, breathed. The contradiction made her stomach twist. “You’re staring.” His voice cut through the silence—smooth, unhurried, the kind of tone that suggested he’d been aware of her from the second she entered. Isla stiffened. “You told me to come.” “Mm.” He closed the ledger. “Not to gawk.” He rose from the chair, moving with the calm precision of someone who always knew the exact distance between himself and everyone else. And who preferred to shorten it. He approached her slowly. Isla fought the instinct to step back. “You’ve been quiet,” he murmured. “Too quiet. Planning something?” “No.” A lie. A warning. A shield. His fingers grazed her jaw—not rough, not yet, but possessive in a way that made her pulse spike. “You hate me today.” His eyes traced her expression like he was cataloging it. “Yesterday you feared me. The day before that, you trembled.” “I still tremble,” she said, voice tight. “Just not the way you think.” His gaze sharpened, interest flashing like a blade catching light. “You’re learning to speak in puzzles.” Sebastian tilted her chin up. “But I prefer honesty.” Honesty. The hypocrisy almost made her laugh. Instead, she held his stare. “Why pretend to be gentle in this room? Does it make you feel human?” His expression didn’t change—but something in his eyes did. A flicker. A crack. Too quick to catch, too strange to interpret. “You think I’m pretending?” he asked softly. “Aren’t you?” He stepped closer. His breath brushed her cheek. “This is the only place where no one watches,” he murmured. “Not the staff. Not my family. Not my enemies.” His hand lowered to her waist, anchoring her in place. “Just you.” A chill ran through her—not fear, not entirely, but something far more dangerous: understanding. Because for a heartbeat, he wasn’t the cold, cruel Sebastian who ordered punishments like errands. He was a man who carried exhaustion in his bones, loneliness in his silence, and violence like a second pulse. And she hated that she could see it. Hated that her empathy betrayed her. Hated the part of her that whispered: If he wasn’t your captor… would you care? She tore her gaze away, breath shaking. “Let go.” “I’m not holding you,” he said quietly. “You’re standing right here.” “You cornered me.” “I always will.” His thumb brushed her hip, slow and deliberate. “You try so hard to hate every part of me,” he said. “But you keep looking. You keep noticing. You keep…studying me.” Isla’s voice cracked. “Because if I don’t understand you, I’ll die.” A long silence. Then slowly—too slowly—Sebastian released her, stepping back like a tide reluctantly leaving shore. “You’re right,” he said. “Understanding me keeps you alive.” He returned to his desk, reclaiming his pen, as though their charged proximity had been nothing more than an aside in his day. “But make no mistake, Isla.” He didn’t look up. “I won’t let you understand enough to escape.” Her pulse hammered. Her breath caught. Because she suddenly knew something he didn’t realize he’d revealed: He wasn’t only watching her. He was afraid of her. And that—more than anything—terrified her in return.
