The room behind Yara’s counter didn’t look like part of a bookstore. It felt older. Darker. As if the walls themselves remembered things no one should. Yara pushed open a crooked wooden door, the hinges groaning like something waking from a long sleep. A draft of cold air slid out, brushing my skin with a sensation like whispered warnings. “Come,” she said. Every instinct screamed at me to run—but I followed her anyway. The narrow passage opened into a hidden chamber lit only by a ring of candles on the floor. Symbols—twisting, sharp-edged, unfamiliar—were etched into the stone tiles, pulsing faintly as though alive. My breath caught. “Where… what is this?” “A place of truth,” Yara murmured. “And beginnings.” She moved with unsettling precision, her long fingers gliding across a small wooden chest in the corner. When she opened it, a wave of cold—real, tangible cold—washed over me. She lifted out a book. If it could even be called that. Its cover was cracked leather, blackened like it had survived a fire. Metal clasps sealed it shut, etched with runes that glimmered like they drank the candlelight. Something inside it pulsed. Slowly. Like a heartbeat. I stumbled one step back. “What is that thing?” “The Grimoire of the First Vein,” Yara said. “Older than this city. Older than most cities. And it responds only to those born with the spark.” “The… spark?” Her eyes met mine with unnerving certainty. “You feel it, don’t you? The pressure under your skin. The storm that wants out.” My chest tightened. The storm. The thing I’d pretended wasn’t real. “Yes,” I whispered, hating how my voice trembled. “I feel something. But that doesn’t mean—” “It means everything.” She placed the book on a stone pedestal in the center of the room. “Touch it.” I froze. “No. I—I don’t know what this is. I don’t know what’s happening to me.” “You were drawn here,” Yara said softly. “Not by accident. By nature. Your nature.” The candles flickered violently, the flames stretching toward the book like they recognized it. “I’m not like you,” I insisted, backing toward the door. “I’m not… magical.” “You are what you were born to be,” Yara answered, her voice suddenly sharp. “And if you walk out now, everything inside you will tear itself apart trying to be heard.” My pulse thundered. Fear warred with something deeper— curiosity hunger desperation The same desperation that had been building for years, rising through humiliation and heartbreak, waiting for a moment like this. My palm tingled. The air thickened around me, humming. Yara stepped back, giving me space. “Emma Reyes,” she said quietly, “the moment you touch this book, nothing in your life will remain the same. Not your fear. Not your pain. And certainly not your enemies.” Enemies. Brianna’s laughter The cameras The whispers The video The shove The humiliation soaking my clothes It all flashed like lightning behind my eyes. My hand lifted before I fully realized what I was doing. “Good,” Yara whispered. “Let the truth answer you.” I reached out. My fingers brushed the leather. And the world exploded. A surge of energy tore through me like a tidal wave made of fire and lightning. My knees buckled. The air roared. Symbols on the floor ignited with blinding light. The book snapped open on its own, pages whipping wildly as if caught in a hurricane. I screamed— or maybe the scream belonged to the magic ripping into me. The chamber spun. My veins burned with molten heat. Something ancient pressed into my mind like a thousand voices chanting in a tongue I didn’t know but somehow understood. Then—silence. A single, deafening heartbeat. And everything went black. The last thing I felt was Yara’s hand catching my shoulder as I collapsed, and her voice— soft, satisfied, almost proud— “Awaken, child. Your power has chosen you.”
