Chapter Five: The Set Sabotage
Chapter Five: The Set Sabotage
The sun was blazing over the Hollywood backlot, turning the faux cobblestone streets into something that shimmered under the California heat. I walked alongside Jake, my heart hammering in a rhythm that could only mean trouble. Today’s shoot was a high-speed chase scene—the kind that made or broke careers—and I had a sinking feeling in my stomach, a warning I couldn’t shake.
Ryan was prepping in his sleek, rented car, muscles tensed, looking every bit the star the tabloids adored. Luna was checking the continuity notes, humming softly, a reassuring presence amid the chaos. But something gnawed at me—I couldn’t explain it, yet I knew. My hands lingered near the brake line of the prop car, inspecting it for the umpteenth time. And then it hit me.
The brake pedal had a strange give. Too soft. Too… off.
My voice cracked across the lot. “Stop! Stop! Don’t start the scene!”
Ryan froze, eyes wide, a bead of sweat tracing his temple. “What? What’s wrong?”
“This car—it’s not safe. The brakes—they’re tampered with!” My hands shook as I pointed, heart hammering so hard I was sure Ryan could hear it.
A murmur went through the crew. Luna’s eyes narrowed, scanning the car and surrounding area. “Who… who would do this?”
Before I could answer, Jake appeared at my side, calm but lethal, his gaze sweeping the lot like a hawk assessing prey. “Everyone step back. No one touches a thing until I’ve checked the cameras.”
Anna arrived moments later, her sunglasses sliding down her nose, face composed but her eyes darting like a cornered fox. “Stella… overreacting again?” she called, voice sweet but sharp as a knife.
I ignored her. This wasn’t overreaction; it was instinct. And instinct was screaming danger.
Jake led me to the monitoring room, where every angle of the lot was recorded. Frame by frame, we watched. And then, there he was—Tom. My stomach dropped. Anna’s distant cousin, seemingly innocuous, leaned over the car, tools in hand, subtly loosening the brake line before slipping away.
“Tom?” I whispered, disbelief and fury colliding in my chest.
Jake’s eyes were dark, unyielding. “He’s not just careless. He’s deliberate. And Anna—she’s orchestrating this.”
We confronted him immediately. “What is this?!” Jake barked, voice echoing off the walls.
Tom’s eyes darted nervously. “I… it was an accident! I didn’t mean…”
I held up the phone Luna had recovered earlier, the one Tom had carelessly dropped. The screen glowed with the chat log. Anna’s instructions were clear as day: “Make sure the brake line is loose. Slow down the shoot. No one should finish this scene on time.”
Tom’s face went pale. He stammered, sweat beading his forehead. “I… I was told to—”
Jake cut him off with a glare that could slice steel. “You think this is just a minor set mishap? Stella, do you remember your parents’ accident? The brakes… the car? You think that was coincidence?”
My chest tightened. Memories of that day flashed before my eyes—twisted metal, the abrupt end of laughter and dreams. A fury unlike anything I’d known boiled inside me, mingled with the terror that someone had tried to recreate that nightmare.
Ryan’s hands balled into fists. “You—you tried to kill me? Or her?” His voice shook with anger and relief, switching between adrenaline-fueled fear and furious disbelief.
Luna stepped forward, her expression fierce. “Justice starts here. And now, it stops.”
Anna, sensing the walls closing in, tried to maintain composure. “Stella… don’t be dramatic. It’s just a set—”
“Don’t!” I shouted, my voice raw, trembling with a mix of rage and grief. “It’s never just a set when lives are at stake! And I won’t let history repeat itself!”
Jake reached out, holding my hand, grounding me. “You did exactly what you were supposed to. And now, the truth comes out.”
Tom collapsed into a chair, shoulders slumping, the weight of guilt finally crushing him. “I… I’ll tell everything. It was Anna—she made me do it!”
I stared at Anna. The mask was gone. Panic replaced her calculated charm. Her eyes widened, a moment of vulnerability I’d never expected. And in that moment, I knew: the chain of lies, sabotage, and manipulation that haunted me since childhood was finally unraveling, one deliberate act at a time.
I drew in a shaky breath, fists unclenching slowly. Today wasn’t just about a stunt gone wrong. Today was about truth. Today was about finally facing the shadows of my past—and exposing them to the light. And I wouldn’t stop until justice was served.
