📖 Dark Magic, Hidden Hearts
Fire on the Roof
The night air was sharp and cold atop Midtown High’s rooftop, city lights glittering far below like a sea of stars. Emma’s chest heaved, fists glowing faintly with the pulsing energy she could barely contain. Across from her, Brianna leaned against the railing, smirk twisted into something dangerously unhinged.
“You think you’re untouchable?” Brianna spat, eyes wild. “Everyone sees what you are now. Everyone knows the monster you’ve become!”
Emma’s fingers trembled, the magic thrumming through her veins like a living heartbeat. “I—I’m not trying to hurt anyone—” she began, voice raw, but Brianna’s laugh cut through the wind.
“You already have!” Brianna shouted, stepping closer, her own panic fueling Emma’s rising storm.
The air thickened. Sparks of violet light arced from Emma’s hands to the metal railing, which groaned and splintered under the sudden force. “No! Stay back!” Emma’s voice cracked, panic threading through every word.
Brianna didn’t. She lunged, and the railing gave way beneath them with a terrifying snap. Both girls teetered on the edge, feet scrabbling for purchase, hearts hammering.
Emma’s stomach lurched. This isn’t supposed to happen. Not like this.
“Emma!” A voice shouted. Liam’s figure appeared at the stairwell entrance, fear and fury blazing in his eyes. Without hesitation, he ran across the rooftop, arms outstretched.
“Hold on! I’ve got you!” he yelled, grabbing Emma’s wrist just as the remaining railing threatened to give way beneath her weight. Sparks of energy still danced around her fingers, crackling dangerously close to her hair and clothes.
Brianna shrieked from the edge, clinging to the broken metal, eyes wide with terror. “You’re insane! You’ll kill us both!”
Emma’s breath came in ragged gasps. The storm inside her roared, anger and desperation twisting together like a wildfire. “I—I can’t stop it! I can’t—”
Liam tightened his grip on her, grounding her. “Then focus on me! I’m right here! You’re not alone!”
Her gaze met his—fear, fury, guilt, and longing all colliding in a single, electrifying moment. With a shuddering effort, she drew a deep breath, channeling the storm into a controlled surge. Sparks recoiled from the edges of the rooftop, settling harmlessly onto the concrete.
The railing crumbled fully beneath Brianna’s weight, and Liam lunged again, catching her arm just in time. All three stumbled back from the edge, trembling, hearts pounding, sweat and rain slicking the cold concrete.
Emma sank to her knees, shaking, chest heaving, eyes wet. “I… I can’t keep doing this,” she whispered, voice barely audible over the wind.
Liam knelt beside her, hands on her shoulders, eyes fierce with unspoken promise. “You don’t have to. Not if you don’t want to. But you won’t fall alone—not ever again.”
Emma swallowed, feeling the fire inside her dim just enough to catch her breath. She looked at Brianna, dangling like a frightened child, then at the city spread beneath them. The choice lay heavy in her hands: unleash her wrath, or stop before it destroyed everything—and everyone—she still cared about.
Her hands trembled, but this time, she didn’t let them spark. The storm would wait.
For now, she would survive.
