📖 Dark Magic, Hidden Hearts
Sparks in the Locker Room
The locker room smelled like bleach and cold metal—usually the safest place for Emma to hide after gym class. But today, safety felt like a myth.
Her heartbeat thudded violently against her ribs. The memory of the ancient spellbook still haunted her fingertips, the ghost of its power humming under her skin. She grabbed her locker handle, trying to steady her breathing.
Calm down. Calm down. Just breathe.
But her pulse only spiked harder.
Behind her, the clacking of heels—sharp, controlled, predatory—echoed through the empty rows.
Brianna.
“Look who’s trembling like a kicked puppy,” Brianna drawled, leaning against the lockers with the practiced grace of someone who had never once been powerless. Her eyes raked over Emma, cold and assessing. “Rough morning? Did someone finally realize you don’t belong here?”
Emma swallowed hard and said nothing, fingers curling tighter around the locker handle.
Bad idea.
The metal shuddered—subtle, but unmistakable. A faint vibration rippled down the entire row of lockers, humming beneath Brianna’s elbow.
Brianna froze.
Her brows knitted together, suspicion sharpening her beautiful, razor-edged features. “What was that?”
“I—I don’t know,” Emma stammered, stepping back. Her palms tingled with heat, a prickle that threatened to spike into something dangerous. “Maybe the building’s old—”
“Don’t lie to me.” Brianna leaned in close, voice dropping to a silk-wrapped threat. “You were here. You touched it. And it moved.”
“It was nothing,” Emma insisted, but the tremor in her voice betrayed her.
Brianna smirked—not a playful one, but one that said she had found a crack, and she fully intended to pry it open.
Before Emma could retreat, the locker room door swung open.
Liam.
Sweat-damp hair, gym bag slung over one shoulder, eyes widening the second he registered the scene—the tension, the proximity, Emma’s pale face.
“Hey,” he said slowly, voice soft with concern. “Everything okay?”
Emma forced a nod, but the lockers behind her betrayed her again—a sharp metallic ping like strained metal under pressure.
Liam’s gaze snapped to it. “What was that?”
Brianna didn’t miss the moment. She straightened and folded her arms, giving Emma a glare that promised she wasn’t letting this go.
“Ask her,” Brianna said. “She seems to be full of surprises lately.”
Emma’s stomach twisted. Heat built under her skin again—wild, restless, the same energy that had knocked her unconscious days earlier.
Not here. Not now. Not in front of them.
She pushed past both of them, her breath shaking as she stumbled into the hallway. Her vision swam for a moment, the world bending at the edges.
Magic pulsed in her veins like a warning.
Behind her, she heard Liam call out, “Emma—wait!”
And Brianna’s voice, low and hungry with suspicion:
“I knew there was something wrong with her.”
Emma didn’t stop. She couldn’t.
Because the truth was becoming painfully clear—
If she didn’t learn to control whatever was inside her, it would destroy her long before Brianna ever could.
