The worst part was that Dante did not look away. He stood beyond the marble rail with both hands braced against it, as if the distance between us was the only thing keeping him upright. His signature still glowed on the phone in my palm. Not a confession to every lie. Not the whole paper. But enough to make the old wedding feel less like a storm that happened to me and more like a door someone had built with his hand. Behind the glass, Noah slept with his cheek turned toward Maya. Blue blanket. Small chest rising. The sight of him made every word I had left feel sharp. Vittoria smoothed the cuff I had wrinkled when I shoved her away from the rail. “Now that the performance is over, put that little scrap away. Dawn is not far.” I closed my fingers around the phone. “No.” Her eyes cooled. “You have no idea what you are holding.” “Neither did Dante when he signed it.” The truth landed between them, not clean enough to solve anything, but clean enough to hurt. The fragment could not tell me who drugged him. It could not show me every clause or every hand that touched the lie. It showed his name where it never should have been: beside the frame that had made me the woman everyone was allowed to hate. I looked at Dante. “You said it belongs to you.” “It does.” “Then your name will not stay hidden behind hers.” I tipped the phone toward Vittoria, just enough for her to see that I was not hiding it from fear. “Not tonight. Not while she still thinks a threat against my son can make me swallow it.” Vittoria gave a small laugh. “And what will you do? Wave a blurred old page around and demand strangers rescue you?” I stepped closer to the gallery glass, not to Noah, but to the line she had been trying to cross all night. “I will choose the moment. I will choose the words. And I will say exactly what it proves—that Dante’s name was put beside the machine that ruined me before the vows. Nothing more. Nothing less.” Her smile changed. It did not disappear. It narrowed. “A public stain does not only touch a man,” she said. “It touches his blood. It touches every doctor who must decide whether a Moretti child is worth the risk of keeping alive.” The room went cold. She wanted me to picture Noah as a price tag. She wanted me to make myself smaller before she ever asked me to. Dante’s jaw locked. “Mother.” “Be quiet,” I said. He did. Immediately. I kept my eyes on Vittoria. “Say it plainly. You want me silent because you think you can make Noah pay for my voice.” “I want you to stop confusing revenge with protection.” “Protection does not stand outside a sleeping child’s room and count down to dawn.” For one beat, her face showed me the woman underneath the silk and perfect posture. Not worry. Not family. Offense that I had named the trick. Dante spoke only when I looked at him. “She will use any public rupture to pressure the treatment team,” he said. His voice was low. “Not because it changes what Noah needs. Because she will make the people around him afraid of the name attached to it.” I hated that he understood the shape of it. I hated more that he had not tried to take the phone while he said it. “Then you understand why I will not give her the decision,” I said. “You do not get it either.” “I know.” The answer came without a fight. It gave him nothing back. I slipped the phone against my ribs, inside the fold of my coat where neither of them could reach it. It was not a promise to act before I was ready. It was a promise that I would not bury it because Vittoria had found a new way to make fear sound practical. “Noah is not your warning label,” I told her. “And I am not your quiet bride anymore.” Maya made a sound behind the glass. Not a word. A breath pulled too sharply through her teeth. I turned. Noah’s small body had gone rigid beneath the blue blanket. A red flush climbed his neck as his fingers curled hard against the sheet.
