📖 The Mafia Heir He Never Knew
Chapter 50: The De Luca Debt
Luca De Luca slammed the vault gate shut before Elena could leave.
The iron bar hit stone hard enough to wake the old hinges. Elena stopped with the prenatal packet locked beneath her coat. Noah was asleep with Marisol upstairs. Bianca's name on the receipt meant she had accepted that packet once. It did not mean she had ordered the surveillance, the sample, or anything else that had happened to Elena.
Luca did not need it to mean more.
He needed other people to believe it did.
"Put it on the table," he said.
Elena's burned hand closed over the packet through the fabric. "No."
Vittoria came out of the vault behind us. She did not tell Luca to move the gate. That was answer enough.
Luca shoved a fist-sized black weight onto the old stone counter. A wolf had been carved into it, teeth sunk around a child's initial.
"A De Luca debt marker," he said. "My grandfather carried it when your grandfather asked us to keep questions away from this room. We did. We let the Morettis call a blood vault a private mercy while your family decided which names belonged inside it."
I had heard pieces of that history all my life. Never the price.
"That marker has nothing to do with Elena," I said.
"It has everything to do with her." Luca pointed to her coat. "Your mother stored proof that a pregnant woman was followed and sampled. My sister signed a receipt for it. Give the packet to my house before sunrise, and it vanishes where the rest of the debt vanished. Refuse, and De Luca opens this vault to every enemy your family has been paying to keep outside."
The threat was plain now.
The registry would not prove who hurt Elena. The packet would not prove Bianca gave an order. But in the hands of people who wanted Noah's inheritance, it could be twisted into a story: Elena hid a Moretti child for power. Elena kept private blood records. Elena was the danger around Noah.
It would turn my son into a prize again.
Elena reached past me and swept the black marker off the counter.
It struck the floor between Luca's shoes.
"You do not get to bury what was done to me because your family helped hide it," she said. "And you do not get to use my son to make your debt sound honorable."
Luca's face tightened. "I did not ask you."
"That is why you came to the wrong mother."
The line hit like a match in dry grass.
Vittoria moved first. She caught Elena's wrist—not the burned one, but close enough that Elena's shoulders went rigid.
"You are making a spectacle out of a file you do not understand," my mother said. "Dante can end this."
Elena pulled free. "He cannot end something that happened to me by trading me to another family."
I stepped between them before Vittoria could reach for her again.
For once, there was no vote to lose. No key I could claim. No room I could lock down and call protection. There was only a woman holding the evidence of what men with our names had done around her body, and another man asking me to take it from her.
Luca bent and picked up the marker.
"The old debt has one payment," he said. "The Moretti heir delivers the thing that puts his house at risk. Not the mother. Not the child. You." He held out his hand. "Take it from her. Bring it to me. Let De Luca swallow it before sunrise."
Elena looked at me.
Not asking.
Waiting to see whether I would make the same choice I had made five years ago—listen to the people around her and call it truth.
I did not reach for the packet.
Instead, I caught Luca's extended wrist and forced his hand down onto the stone counter.
"You want to be paid by a Moretti? Take it from me." My grip tightened until the black marker cut into his palm. "But you will not make Elena's body, her evidence, or my son's name your payment."
Luca tried to wrench free. I held him there.
The wolf marker left a red crescent in his skin.
Behind me, Elena did not move. I could feel her watching every choice I had no right to ask her to trust.
Then Luca smiled through his teeth.
"Fine," he said. "Pay it yourself."
He twisted hard enough to tear his hand free. Blood shone along the cut. He wiped it across the black marker and pressed the wet wolf against the vault gate.
The seal landed at eye level.
At sunrise, it would tell every De Luca in the house that the debt had been refused.
Luca turned toward the corridor. Two De Luca men who had been standing silent beside the gate pulled the long black alliance cord from its hooks over the doorway. The braid had hung there since before I was born, a promise that the families would keep each other's dirty wars from becoming open ones.
They did not take the packet.
They did not touch Elena.
But they carried the cord away.
Vittoria watched it leave, and for the first time that night, her calm broke.
"Do you understand what you have done?" she asked me.
"I stopped him from doing it to her."
"You have made us naked."
Elena's laugh was small and cruel. "That is what you called me when you put my life in a packet."
Luca paused at the gate. Bianca stood behind him in the corridor, her pale face turned toward the wolf seal. She had not tried to defend her name on the receipt. She had not denied seeing the packet before.
"At sunrise," Luca said, "my house stops covering yours. The vault is still closed tonight. After sunrise, every person who wants a Moretti heir will know there is a door worth breaking down."
"Noah stays out of this," Elena said.
"Then make sure the man who failed you knows what he owes." Luca's eyes settled on me. "He has until morning to decide whether he will keep his family safe—or keep you safe from them."
He left the wolf seal bleeding against the gate.
The corridor swallowed Bianca, Luca, and the torn alliance cord. The iron gate stayed shut between us and the way out.
Elena looked at the packet under her coat, then at me.
"Do not tell me this is protection," she said.
I could not.
Above us, Noah was still asleep with Marisol. Below us, the black wolf seal marked the hour when the De Lucas would stop hiding the war.
And before sunrise, I would have to choose whether to give Elena the whole threat and risk driving her away with Noah—or keep it from her long enough to become exactly the man she had every reason to leave.
