Chapter 41: The Kiss They Bought

At six o'clock, my coat was waiting for me on a chair outside Dr. Hall's review room. It was still wet at one shoulder. The Room Four clearance tag Bianca had pinned to it bled red against the dark wool. Beside it stood a foam board with a photograph blown up larger than my head. I knew the picture before I reached it. The night Dante had put the ninety-day band on my hand, reporters had crowded the car door. In the full image, I had been turning away from him. In Bianca's crop, the door and the ring were gone. Only Dante's bent head and my lifted face remained, close enough to look like a kiss. A kiss they had bought by cutting away everything that made it a lie. Bianca stood beside the board in a cream dress, her bandaged wrist held carefully against her waist. She looked fragile enough to make strangers lower their voices around her. The people waiting for Hall's review had already done it. A few had copies of the cropped photo folded in their hands. "There she is," Bianca said. "The mother who left a sick child so she could chase my former fiancé through a clinic." The words hit harder because Noah was ten steps behind the closed pediatric doors. I did not reach for the coat. The wet sleeve from Room Four lay flat inside my inner pocket, warm now from my body and my blood. If I fought Bianca for the wool, she would fight me for what I had saved beneath it. So I walked past the coat and lifted the corner of the board instead. "You paid to crop that," I said. Bianca's mouth sharpened. "I paid for the truth." "Then why did you cut out the ring? Why did you cut out the car door?" No one answered. They could all see the missing space once I named it. Bianca pointed at the clearance tag. "And this? That came from Clinic Six. She took clinical material. She left Noah without his mother because Dante Moretti called." Her gaze slid to the review-room door. "Dr. Hall has been reckless enough already. How is he supposed to protect a child when his mother is running after scraps and men?" There it was. Not concern. A blade aimed at the doctor who had stayed beside my son. My burned arm throbbed under its damp cuff. I let them see the angry red skin, but not the paper hidden close to my ribs. "I left Noah with the nurse who knows his breathing better than you know his name," I said. "I went because something at that clinic could tell me why people were watching my child before he was born. I will not hand that lead to you so you can bury it again." "A lead," Bianca repeated, laughing softly. "That is what a desperate woman calls stealing." "No. A desperate woman calls a lie a lie when it is standing in front of her." I turned toward the pediatric doors. "Marisol." The door opened before I could call again. Nurse Marisol came through with Noah's blue dinosaur blanket folded over one arm. She had not brought him out. She had kept him where he belonged, behind the line I had drawn for him. Bianca's smile slipped. Marisol stopped beside me, not in front of me. That mattered. "Noah was stable at five-thirty-seven," she said. Her voice carried without becoming loud. "Mrs. Vale asked me to keep him still, keep questions away from him, and not let anyone move him. I did. She left only after I told her I had him." Bianca lifted her chin. "You expect everyone to accept a nurse's opinion over a photograph?" "It isn't an opinion," Marisol said. "I was there." She held Bianca's gaze, and for the first time that morning, Bianca looked like someone had taken away her script. I picked up my abandoned coat by two fingers and pulled the Room Four tag free. The pin scraped my palm. I set the tag on top of the fake kiss. "This is what you have," I said. "My coat. A cropped photograph. A story about a mother abandoning her child." Then I looked at the people holding Bianca's copies. "What you do not have is Noah. You do not have my permission to touch his care. And you do not get to use a lie about me to remove the doctor who has kept him alive." One of the women by the wall lowered her copy. Another turned it over, as if the blank back might offer her something cleaner than Bianca's version. It was not a victory big enough to breathe in. The photo was still in their hands. The coat would still be carried through every room Bianca could enter. The rumor had already found its shape: needy mother, rich man, sick little boy left behind. But Marisol's truth now lived beside it. Noah had been safe. I had gone for his future, not Dante. Bianca snatched the tag from the board and closed her fingers around it. "Fine. Let the nurse tell her little story. Ask Dante, then." The room changed before I turned. Dante stood at the far end of the waiting area, rain still dark on his shoulders. He had not come near me. He had not touched the coat or the photograph. His eyes went first to my burned arm, then to the copies in strangers' hands. Bianca faced him with the tag flashing between her fingers. "Tell them she isn't your mistress," she said. "Tell them that was not a kiss. Or admit you bought her with that contract and let everyone see what she really left Noah for." Dante's jaw tightened. If he said nothing, Bianca's lie would harden around Noah before the review room door even opened. If he claimed me to save me, the Morettis would own the words that followed. And Dante was looking at me as though he finally understood that the answer could not belong to him.
