Chapter 27: The First Real Apology

The black SUV disappeared beneath the FDR overpass before I could force my bad shoulder through the 14 East service gate. Its gunman had not taken the valet receipt this time. He had taken the route Matteo had used to get inside: a paper slip torn from the concierge book and my phone when he slammed my hand against the steel frame. The screen went black under my palm. In the gutter, the only thing I still owned was the blurred plate photograph I had taken before the SUV turned east. The service elevator opened above me with no Matteo in it. I had come to pull my brother out. Instead, Vittoria's man had made sure Matteo knew I could be beaten to him. By the time I reached the penthouse, blood had soaked through the dressing Rocco had tied over my shoulder. Elena waited alone in the kitchen. The west-door strip, Ellis's photograph, and Gabriel's carbon copy were gone from the counter; she had already sent them with Ms. Reyes. Noah's night-light glowed behind his closed bedroom door. Elena looked at the dead phone in my hand, then at the blood on my cuff. She did not move to help. "Did you find Matteo?" "No." The word scraped out of me. "They drove him from 14 East. I got the plate before they broke my phone. That is all I have." She put a glass of water within reach, not in my hand. "Five years ago, you had less than a minute to ask me one question. Why didn't you?" The shoulder throbbed hard enough to blur the tiles. I braced both hands on the counter instead of looking away. "Because Bianca gave me a story that made anger easy." My voice was low. "You reached for me. You tried to tell me to look at the silver case going through the west door. I watched you reach for me, and I ordered the service hall cleared. I let you leave without asking whether the video was real." Elena's face did not soften. "Do not put that on Bianca. Or your mother. Or a tape." "I won't." I swallowed against the taste of blood. "No one made that choice for me. I refused to hear you because believing the worst made me feel powerful. I was wrong." For a moment, the only sound was Noah's night-light clicking through its slow stars. "Remorse is not payment," Elena said. "It does not buy you Matteo. It does not buy you Noah. It does not buy one inch of my evidence." "I know." She took the plate photograph from my pocket and studied it. The rear bumper had a pale scrape shaped like Vittoria's private-garage gate. "Hale manages her drivers," she said. "The plate tells us which vehicle took Matteo. It does not prove Hale gave the order. Without the order, Vittoria calls this another Moretti family fight and moves Matteo before anyone can stop her." She set a cheap burner phone beside the water glass. "Bring me Hale's written or recorded move order before midnight. No family teams. No Moretti guard. No money that lets him claim you bought the proof. If you can do that, Ms. Reyes can give it to the police and force a safety hold before they take Matteo out of the city." The task was not forgiveness. It was a door she would close the instant I tried to own it. "And if I fail?" "Then I decide what happens to Matteo without you." I picked up the burner. It rang before I could answer. Elena took it from me. "Matteo?" His breath was ragged beneath the rush of tires. "Only you. No Dante. No Moretti guards." "I hear you," she said. "Hale's moving me to a private airstrip at midnight." Something metal knocked against the line. "I have a card from the silver case. Not the editor's name. The path to whoever handled it. If Hale gets me on that plane, the card goes with me." My hand tightened around the counter. Elena raised one finger without looking at me, and I stayed silent. "You do not get to set the safety plan alone," she told Matteo. "Ms. Reyes chooses the police contact. I choose the meeting place. No Moretti vehicle, no family house, no man I have not named. If you accept those terms, I will come." Silence stretched long enough for the cut in my shoulder to start dripping again. "Only Elena," Matteo said at last. "On your terms. Before midnight." The line died. Elena put the burner in her pocket and faced me. "Get Hale's order. I will not let Vittoria move Matteo because you finally found the words you should have used five years ago." I left the dead phone, my ring, and every claim I had once made on that house behind me. Hale had until midnight to show us whose command he followed. Elena had until midnight to decide whether Matteo lived long enough to speak.
