The paper folder was still warm from Mara's hands. Above the operating-room doors, the red light stayed on. Someone had opened Noah's record before he collapsed at school. Before I dragged him into this hospital. Before anyone had a reason to know he might need his chest cut open. "Show me exactly what they touched," I said. Mara did not point me toward a computer. She led us through the waiting room to a small desk beside the chapel, where a tired nurse guarded a printer and a stack of discharge envelopes. The place smelled like burned coffee and floor cleaner. Mara laid three pages out between us. "This is all the system will give us on paper," she said. "The account had no person attached to it. Just that title. Family Observer." The first page listed Noah's old referral. The second listed his blood type and the number I had given the school for emergencies. On the third, beneath a date from six weeks ago, was one short instruction. Notify me if the child needs surgery. The words were plain enough to hurt. Someone had not merely watched my son. They had waited for his body to fail. Dante stood across from me, his suit jacket streaked with someone else's blood from helping move Noah to pre-op. "I can have my people find who hid behind that account." "No." I pressed my palm over the pages before he could touch them. "Your people report to you. Your mother knows how to turn that into a locked door." His jaw tightened, but he nodded once. "Then tell me who you want." The red light over the operating-room doors burned at the end of the corridor. I could not go in. I could not pull Noah back through those doors. But I could make sure the person who had marked him did not get to erase this trail. "Mara, make two copies," I said. "One goes to Ms. Reyes, the independent advocate. She seals it with the report about Ward and the transport band. The other goes to the police officer who took Bianca's recorder. Not Moretti security. Not your foundation." Mara's shoulders loosened. "I can do that." "And the originals?" Dante asked. I folded them and slid them inside my coat. "Stay with me." He looked at the pocket where I had put them, then at me. Five years ago, Dante had believed a screen over my voice. Today he could have reached for the pages and called it protection. Instead, he stepped back. "All right," he said. That should not have felt like a victory. It did. The printer began to whir. At the same moment, a young orderly hurried through the chapel doors with a padded envelope clutched to his chest. "Ms. Vale?" he called. "A courier left this at the security desk. He said it had to go to Noah's mother." Dante moved first, then stopped when I held out my hand. The envelope was light. No return address. Just my name in block letters that looked too deliberate to be kind. "It could be anything," he said. "It is addressed to me." "Elena—" "If your mother sent it, I will not hide from it. If someone else did, I will not hand it to you to decide whether I can see it." His eyes closed for half a second. "Open it here. With witnesses." That, I could accept. Mara came back with the copies. Ms. Reyes arrived from the corridor and put herself at my shoulder. The orderly backed away but did not leave. Four people watched as I tore the seam. Inside was an old silver memory card and a torn strip of a wedding program. My wedding program. For one second I was back under white flowers, with a room full of strangers watching Dante look at me like I was poison. Mara found a small card reader in the chapel desk. I put the memory card in myself. The video began without sound. Grainy footage showed the back corridor of the ballroom five years ago. A rack of black AV cases stood open beneath a crooked EXIT sign. Then Bianca walked into frame wearing white silk and my bride's smile. She crouched beside the control rack. Her hand disappeared among the cables. Someone off camera said her name. Bianca looked up, frightened. The picture tore into snow before I could see who had spoken.
