The north orchard of the old Vance estate had been dead for years. Black branches clawed at the moon. Roots split the frozen ground. No birds nested there, and no insects sang. Elena remembered running between those trees as a child, before she understood that even the safe parts of her father's house had only been rooms in a larger cage. Now the trees leaned toward her as if they remembered too. Damon walked at her side. Mara followed with four wolves and Viktor in silver restraints. The chain around Viktor's throat had been etched by Morwen so any attempt to shift, flee, or speak a binding word would choke him unconscious. Elena found that comforting. The locket pulled her toward a sunken stone well hidden beneath dead ivy. Its cracked face glowed faintly blue. Beneath the glow, the remnant tether scraped in the same direction, cold and impatient. "There," Viktor said. "The first chamber." Damon caught his shoulder and shoved him forward. "Open it." Viktor pressed his bleeding palm to the stone rim. For one suspended second nothing happened. Then old runes surfaced beneath the moss, answering his cleansing mark with a reluctant red light. The well split open, stairs unfolding into darkness. The smell rose first. Iron. Damp earth. Old magic. Seraphina's blood. Elena's knees nearly locked. Damon was there before she asked, his hand at the base of her spine. Not pushing. Holding. "I am here," he said quietly. "I know." She went down. The first chamber was exactly what Viktor had promised and worse than Elena had imagined. Contract tables lined the walls. Rusted hooks hung above bowls etched with Vance and Thorn sigils. Shelves of sealed glass vials stood behind warded doors, each one labeled in Marcus's precise hand. Seraphina Thorn. Trial sample. Seraphina Thorn. Decoy batch. Seraphina Thorn. Anchor reserve. For one breath Elena was twelve again, being told her mother was dead. Then she was older, being told her mother might be alive. Then older still, holding Seraphina as she died for real in the storm of Chapter 72's battlefield, blood warm on Her hands. Every lie had used the same scent. Elena lifted the locket. "Burn them." Mara moved instantly. Iron ash, witchfire, black salt. The first shelf went up in blue flame. Glass screamed as the vials cracked. The scent of Seraphina's blood rose, then vanished under purifying smoke. The cave shook. Far below them, something woke angry. "Second chamber," Viktor said. His face had gone pale. "Now." They descended through a throat of stone into a cavern filled with dark artifacts. Broken blades. Wolf skulls. Contract seals. Shards of mirrors that reflected Elena as a child, Elena as a corpse, Elena with black eyes and the spirit's smile. "Do not look long," Damon ordered. "I know how mirrors lie," Elena said. At the center of the cavern, a crystal hung above an altar made from fused bone and silver. It pulsed with the same rhythm the seed had once pulsed beneath Elena's heart. The anchor. The spirit's voice slid through the chamber. "You bring me every key." Viktor flinched. Mara's wolves shifted uneasily. Damon drew closer to Elena, his alpha power rising like a wall. "You have no seed," Elena said. "No Kael. No child. No mother to bleed." The spirit laughed. "I have fear. You brought plenty." The first illusion hit Mara. Her dead brother called from the dark, begging her to lower her weapon. She almost did. Elena snapped the relic's light across the cavern, cutting the vision in half. The second struck Damon. For a heartbeat he saw Elena walking away with a contract in her hand and Viktor's mark at her throat. His claws came out, not at her, but at the lie. He shredded it before Elena reached him. "Good," she said. His eyes stayed on hers. "I know what is real." The third illusion came for Elena. Marcus stood at the altar, smiling. "You were always easiest to move when someone you loved was bleeding." Behind him, Seraphina opened dead eyes in a glass coffin. Elena almost broke. Then the locket warmed with another presence - Alexander Thorn's last imprint, faint but steady. Not a rescue. A reminder. She raised her knife. "My mother is dead. My father is dead. And you are out of borrowed faces." The illusion cracked. Viktor staggered forward under Damon's grip. "The cleansing mark has to touch the ward. Then the silver pendant can pierce the crystal." "Do it," Elena said. Viktor pressed both bound hands to the altar. The mark on his chest flared. The remnant tether snapped visible, a thin silver line between his blood, Elena's locket, and the crystal. It was not intimate now. It was a fuse. Elena poured the relic's light down it. The crystal split. The spirit screamed. Dark energy burst out, flooding the cavern in a cold wave. Damon wrapped himself around Elena before it hit, but the force passed through muscle and bone. It struck the locket instead. The crack in the silver opened wide. For one terrible second, the locket became a mouth. The spirit surged toward Elena, not the child, not Damon, not Viktor. Her. The last living Thorn blood in the room, the woman who had broken every cage it had built. Elena held the relic with both hands and refused to drop it. "Run!" Viktor shouted. Elena could not. The spirit was pouring into the silver, and the silver was burning through her palms. If she let go, it would scatter. If she held on, it might take her with it. His hands closed over hers. "Together," he said. They drove the silver pendant into the broken crystal. White light swallowed the cavern. Glass vials exploded in the chamber above. The altar cracked from base to crown. The spirit's scream became a thousand voices, then one, then nothing but a pressure behind Elena's eyes. When the light collapsed, she was on her knees. The crystal was dust. The archive was burning. But the locket pulsed black in her hands, and something inside it was still alive. "Elena?" Damon said. She looked at him and tried to answer. The spirit answered first.
