Chapter 96: The Bonding Ritual
The ritual circle was built like a cage.
Morwen drew the outer ring in salt, the second in ash, and the third in Damon's blood. Not enough to weaken him - Elena had made her promise that twice - but enough for the magic to know the father of the child had entered the fight willingly.
Damon stood beside Elena anyway, pale beneath the bronze of his skin, one hand braced against the table. The antidote had saved him. It had not forgiven him for bleeding through half the morning.
"You should be in bed," Elena said.
"I was. I disliked it."
"You collapsed in an arena."
"And woke up to find you had dragged Viktor home in chains." His eyes flicked toward the center of the circle, where Viktor knelt with silver around his wrists and throat. "That improved my mood."
Despite everything, Elena's mouth softened.
Viktor noticed. "If the two of you are finished flirting over my restraints, the moon is moving."
Damon's growl was immediate.
Elena stepped into the circle before it could become a fight. "Explain it one more time."
Morwen answered, not Viktor. "The tether opens between you and Viktor because his bloodline can draw the seed. The Heartstone will receive the taint. Damon anchors the child. The locket keeps the tether from becoming a claim."
"And if Viktor tries to twist it?"
Morwen lifted a black iron knife. "I cut his throat before the magic settles."
Viktor sighed. "Comforting."
"Accurate," Elena said.
The Heartstone sat in a copper bowl at the center of the circle, smaller than Elena expected, dull red and veined like a living organ. Viktor had not lied about its existence. He had lied about nearly everything around it.
Elena knelt opposite him. Damon stayed just outside the inner ring, close enough that his fingers brushed the back of her neck when she bowed her head. The touch was brief, hidden from most of the room, but it ran through her hotter than the candlelight.
"Look at me," he said.
She did.
"This does not bind you to him."
"I know."
"If the magic lies, we break it."
"I know."
His thumb traced the place below her ear where her pulse hammered. "Come back to me."
The room narrowed to his voice, his hand, the fierce restraint in his eyes. Elena wanted one impossible minute where no one needed her blood, her womb, her courage, or her death. She wanted his mouth on hers and a locked door between them and the world.
Instead, she kissed his palm.
"I always do."
Morwen began the chant.
Viktor cut his palm. Elena cut hers. Their blood fell onto the Heartstone at the same time, and the stone woke with a red pulse that shook the floor. A thread of light snapped between them - not warm, not tender, not wanted. It was a wire under the skin, clinical and invasive, a channel built for work.
The seed inside Elena recoiled.
She gasped. Damon stepped forward, but Morwen snapped, "Hold the line."
Elena pressed one hand to her belly and the other to the locket. "Pull it."
Viktor's face tightened. For the first time, his arrogance cracked under real pain. The cleansing mark on his chest burned through his skin, white fire forming the shape of a crescent. The cold hook inside Elena's womb unwound one thorn at a time and dragged itself toward the tether.
The Heartstone drank.
Black smoke poured from Elena's palm into the stone. It carried whispers - Kael's dying breath, Malachai's laugh, the spirit's old hunger. Damon poured alpha power into the outer ring until the circle glowed gold, shielding the child from the pull.
Then the spirit struck back.
The Heartstone split with a sound like bone.
Smoke formed a face above the circle and lunged for Viktor. "Cleansing blood," it hissed. "Old jailer. New door."
Viktor screamed as the spirit tried to enter him through the open tether. The wire between him and Elena went black. Pain slammed through her body, dropping her to one hand.
Damon crossed the ring.
The salt burned his boots. Morwen shouted a warning. Damon ignored both. He caught Elena's shoulder with one hand and drove the other into the golden line of his own blood.
"Take mine too," he snarled at the spirit. "If you want the child, go through me."
The circle blazed.
Elena used that light. She seized the locket, the cracked casing cutting into her palm, and pushed every command she had left into the tether.
Not claim. Not marriage. Not desire.
Purpose.
The seed tore free.
The Heartstone turned white, then black, then clear. The cold inside Elena's belly vanished so suddenly she sobbed. Beneath her hand, the child kicked - warm, alive, furious.
Morwen slammed the iron knife through the tether.
The thread snapped.
Mostly.
Elena felt the severed end recoil into her chest like a burnt nerve. Across the circle, Viktor collapsed, breathing hard. A faint silver line still connected his cleansing mark to the locket's crack, thin as hair, pulsing once before disappearing from sight.
Damon saw her face. "What?"
Elena swallowed. "The child is clear."
Morwen checked her, then nodded, relief cutting years from her face. "Yes. The child is clear."
Damon closed his eyes for one heartbeat.
Viktor laughed weakly from the floor. "And the tether?"
Elena turned to him.
He smiled like a man who had lost a war but hidden a knife. "Not gone, is it?"
Damon's fingers closed around Viktor's throat before anyone else moved. "What did you do?"
Viktor choked, but his eyes stayed on Elena. "Insurance. A remnant only. Enough for her to find the anchor. Enough for the anchor to find her."
Morwen went still. "The spirit's physical anchor."
Elena looked at the clear Heartstone, then at the cracked locket.
The child was safe.
But the source was still calling.
