The rooftop had become a war zone. Elena crouched behind a stone parapet, the locket searing against her chest as bolts of dark energy screamed overhead. Damon stood a few feet away, his body half-shifted, claws extended, eyes fixed on the figure advancing through the smoke. Kael. But not the Kael she knew. His eyes were black voids, his skin pulsing with veins of sickly green light. The ancient spirit had taken him fully, twisting his loyalty into something monstrous. He moved with an unnatural glide, each step leaving scorch marks on the concrete. "The locket," the spirit hissed through Kael's mouth. "Give it to me, and I will let the alpha live." Damon growled, stepping in front of Elena. "You'll have to go through me." "That can be arranged." The spirit raised Kael's hand, and a wave of black energy surged forward. Damon braced, but the force slammed into him like a battering ram, throwing him against the far wall. He crashed into the brick with a sickening crack and slid to the ground, blood streaming from a gash on his temple. "Damon!" Elena screamed. She tried to run to him, but the spirit flickered, appearing directly in front of her. Its cold hand clamped around her throat, lifting her off the ground. The relic swung wildly against her chest, pulsing with a warmth that felt like a dying heartbeat. "You think you can contain me?" the spirit whispered. "I have waited centuries for a vessel of your bloodline. Your child will be my gateway." Elena clawed at its hand, her vision darkening. She could feel the locket burning hotter, responding to the spirit's presence. Desperation ignited her mind. She remembered the ancient words Kael had once murmured about binding spirits—a ritual that required sacrifice. She stopped struggling. "Take the silver pendant," she gasped, her voice barely a whisper. The spirit's black eyes narrowed. "A trick." "No. You want it? It's yours." She forced her hand to the clasp, her fingers trembling. "But you have to release me to take it." The spirit hesitated. Behind it, Damon was stirring, trying to rise. The cult forces were closing in from the forest, their torches like a sea of fireflies. Elena had seconds. The spirit lowered her to the ground but kept its grip on her throat, loosening just enough for her to breathe. "Give it to me." Elena unclasped the relic, the silver chain slipping through her fingers. The spirit's gaze locked onto the artifact, hunger distorting Kael's features. She held it out. The moment the spirit's hand touched the locket, Elena activated the binding spell she had memorized from the old texts. She poured every ounce of her will into the artifact, forcing it to absorb not just the spirit's power but the spirit itself. A scream tore from Kael's throat—a sound that was both human and ancient. Green light erupted from his body, streaming into the locket. Elena held on, her hands burning, her body convulsing as the spirit fought back. "You fool!" the spirit roared. "You will become my prison!" Then everything went white. When Elena opened her eyes, she was on the ground, the relic cold and inert on her chest. Kael lay beside her, his eyes closed, his breathing steady. Damon knelt over her, his face pale, his hand pressed to his bleeding wound. "Elena," he breathed. "What did you do?" She looked down at the silver pendant. It felt different—heavier, as if filled with something alive. She could feel the spirit writhing inside, pressing against the silver walls, trying to find a way out. "I trapped it," she whispered. "Inside the locket." Damon's stare sharpened. "That's not possible. The relic was meant to hold power, not a sentient entity." "I know." She touched her stomach, where the faintest flutter of life had begun. "But it wanted my child. I couldn't let it..." A wave of dizziness swept over her. The spirit was still there, coiled inside the locket, but she could feel it reaching for her, trying to corrupt her from within. It whispered in the back of her mind, promising power, promising revenge, promising to protect her child if she let it out. She clenched her fist around the locket. "No," she said aloud. "You're mine now." Damon pulled her to her feet, his arm around her waist. The cult forces had halted at the edge of the forest, watching, waiting. Malachai stood at their head, his gaunt face twisted in fury. "She has the spirit," he shouted. "Kill her, and it will be free!" The cult surged forward. Damon roared, his body fully shifting into his wolf form. He stood between Elena and the army, his fur bristling, his fangs bared. But Elena knew he was too injured. They wouldn't survive another assault. She looked at the relic. The spirit whispered again: *Let me out. I can destroy them all. I can protect your child.* Her hand trembled. Then she felt it—a faint kick from within her womb. Her child, responding to the danger. Responding to her. She made her choice. "Damon," she said, her voice steady. "Get us out of here. Now." He looked back at her, his wolf eyes questioning. But he trusted her. He grabbed her arm and ran, pulling her toward the hidden escape tunnel beneath the stronghold. The cult's arrows flew past them. Elena clutched the locket, feeling the spirit rage against its prison. She had become its cage. Now she had to find a way to expel it before it corrupted her child—or she became the monster she had trapped.
