The world was a sea of gray. Elena floated in it, weightless, her body nothing but a distant memory. She heard voices, muffled and distorted, as if they came from the other end of a long tunnel. One voice cut through the haze—deep, rough, desperate. Damon. He was calling her name, over and over, his voice cracking like stone under pressure. She tried to answer, but her lips wouldn't move. Her lungs wouldn't fill. She was trapped in the space between life and death, tethered by a thread so thin she felt it fraying with every breath she didn't take. In the penthouse, Damon knelt beside the bed where Elena lay, her face pale as bone, her chest barely rising. The pack healer, an old wolf named Edra, had done everything she could. Now she stood back, her hands stained with Elena's blood, her eyes grim. "Her body is healing, Alpha, but her mind is lost. The merging of her father's soul fragment has torn her consciousness apart. She may not wake." His hands trembled as he took Elena's cold fingers. "There has to be something. Anything." Edra shook her head. "I've given her every stimulant, every healing spell I know. Her body lives, but her spirit is adrift. Only a bond stronger than death can pull her back." Damon's expression locked down. He knew what she meant. The mate bond—the one he had denied, fought, tried to suppress—was the only anchor left. He had spent weeks keeping Elena at arm's length, convinced that his need for her bloodline was a curse, not a gift. But now, watching her slip away, he realized the truth: she was his mate, in every way that mattered. And he would not let her go. He pressed his forehead to hers, closing his eyes. "Elena, come back to me. I'm not letting you go. Do you hear me? I don't care what you did, who you were. You're mine. Fight." He poured his alpha power into her, a stream of life force that burned through his veins like molten fire. The room grew cold as he drained himself, his skin paling, his muscles screaming. But he didn't stop. He would give her every drop of strength he had. Elena felt it—a warmth spreading through the gray, a hand reaching into the void. She saw a light, faint at first, then growing. She heard his voice, not as a distant echo, but as a command that shook her soul. "Fight." She reached for the light. On the third day, Elena's eyes fluttered open. Damon was beside her, his face gaunt, dark circles carved beneath his eyes. He looked like he hadn't slept in a week. When he saw her awake, relief flooded his features, raw and unguarded. "You're back," he whispered, his voice hoarse. Elena tried to speak, but her throat was dry as ash. Damon lifted a glass of water to her lips, his hands gentle. She drank, the liquid burning its way down. "What happened?" she managed. "You nearly died," he said, his voice flat. "Your father's spirit... it was too much. You merged with it, but your consciousness fractured. Edra said you might never wake." Her hand moved to her chest, where the locket had rested. It was gone. "The locket?" "Destroyed. You absorbed its power. It's part of you now." She felt it—a strange energy coiling in her core, ancient and foreign. Her father's memories flickered at the edges of her mind, fragments of a life she had never known. She pushed them away, focusing on the present. Before she could say more, the door burst open. Kael stood there, his eyes wild, a blade in his hand. Behind him, a dozen loyalists filled the hallway, their faces hard. "Step away from the girl, Alpha," Kael said, his voice cold. "You've weakened yourself beyond reason. You're no fit to lead." Damon rose slowly, his body swaying. "You dare challenge me?" "I dare to save this pack from your obsession. She's a traitor. She betrayed us once, and you've let her destroy you again. Step aside, or I'll take her head myself." The loyalists surged forward, but Damon moved faster. Even weakened, his alpha instinct drove him. He met Kael's blade with his bare hands, twisting it from his grip, then drove his fist into Kael's jaw. The beta staggered, blood spraying from his mouth. But the loyalists were many. They swarmed Damon, dragging him down. Elena watched, her body screaming in protest as she forced herself upright. The new power inside her surged, responding to her will. She raised her hand, and a wave of force exploded from her palm, throwing the attackers across the room. Kael scrambled to his feet, his eyes wide. "What are you?" Elena stood, unsteady but fierce. "I'm the woman who's going to end you." She moved faster than she ever had, her body fueled by the merged power. She grabbed Kael by the throat, slamming him against the wall. "You want to kill me? Try." Kael laughed, even as his face purpled. "You think it's over? The Crimson Fang's true master is still out there. And he still wants your child." Elena's ice threaded through her pulse. The child was not a rumor anymore. She and Damon had known since the healer confirmed the pregnancy, but hearing Kael use that life like a bargaining chip made the room tilt. Kael's grin was bloody. "You thought Alistair was the end of it? The Council knew before you did. They have been waiting for the alpha's heir, and they will do anything to claim it." Damon's eyes met hers, shock hardening into rage. Her fingers loosened as Kael's words sank in. She pressed her palm to her stomach, still flat beneath her torn shirt, and felt the faint flicker of life answer with a heat that was not fear. Kael slipped from her grip, retreating to the door. "You can't protect it forever. The master is coming. And he will take what's his." He vanished into the corridor, leaving Elena and Damon alone in the wreckage. Elena sank to her knees, her hand pressed to her belly. Damon knelt beside her, his arm around her shoulders. "We'll face it together," he said. But Elena heard the doubt in his voice. And she knew, with a certainty that chilled her to the bone, that their fight was only beginning.
