Chapter 72: The Battle Begins
The barrier flared as Alistair's dark storm slammed against it, sending shards of light across the clearing. Elena's ears rang with the impact, her hand still clutching the charm that pulsed warm against her palm. Beside her, Damon stood rigid, his eyes fixed on Alistair, who now raised both arms, tendrils of shadow twisting from his fingertips.
"Hold the line!" Kael's voice cut through the chaos, and the pack members braced, their wolf forms bristling as the storm intensified. Trees buckled, their roots tearing from the earth, and the sky above churned with unnatural clouds that blotted out the moon.
Elena's mother stood apart, her face blank, her eyes hollow. The sight twisted something deep in Elena's chest—a knife of guilt and rage. She had done this. Alistair had used her bloodline, her mother, as a weapon.
"Elena." Damon's fingers found hers, squeezing once. "When I give the signal, use the charm. Break whatever hold he has on her."
"And then?"
"Then we end this."
Alistair's laughter rolled across the battlefield like thunder. "Fools. You think a warding circle can stop me? I've fed on your pack's fear for decades. Tonight, I feast on your hope."
He thrust his hands forward, and the storm collapsed inward, a vortex of black energy that swallowed the barrier's light. Pack members screamed as the darkness touched them, their bodies convulsing, their howls turning to cries of agony. Three wolves fell, their fur smoking, their eyes rolling back.
"No!" Elena lunged forward, but Damon caught her arm.
"Wait. He wants you to react. Stay focused."
She forced herself to breathe, to watch. Alistair was drawing power from the storm, feeding on the pack's pain. Every cry made him stronger. They couldn't win by fighting his magic directly.
"Then we cut off his supply," she muttered, and Damon's eyes flashed wide.
"You're thinking of the locket?"
"And my father's spirit. Together, they can sever his connection to the dark magic."
"But you don't know how—"
"I'll figure it out."
Before he could argue, she broke free and ran toward her mother, the charm blazing in her fist. Alistair saw her, and his smile widened. "Ah, the daughter comes to save the mother. How touching."
He gestured, and her mother's body jerked, turning to face Elena. Her hands raised, claws extending, and a growl ripped from her throat.
"Mom, it's me. Elena."
Her mother's eyes flickered—a brief flash of recognition—before the darkness swallowed them again. She lunged, claws aimed at Elena's heart.
Elena sidestepped, barely avoiding the strike, and grabbed her mother's wrist. The charm touched her mother's skin, and a burst of white light erupted between them. Her mother screamed, her body convulsing, and Elena held on.
"I'm not letting go. You're stronger than him. Fight."
Her mother's eyes cleared for a second, and she gasped, "Elena... run..."
"No. I'm not leaving you."
Alistair howled with rage, and the storm intensified, sending bolts of black lightning toward them. Damon intercepted, his wolf form crashing into the energy, absorbing the blow with a grunt of pain. He fell to one knee, smoke rising from his fur.
"Damon!"
"Keep going!" he roared, pushing himself up.
Elena pressed the charm harder against her mother's chest, pouring all her will into it. "Mom, I need you. The pack needs you. Please."
Her mother's eyes cleared fully, and she gasped, her claws retracting. "Elena... what have I done?"
"You were controlled. It's not your fault. But now I need you to help me stop him."
Her mother nodded, tears streaming down her face, and together they turned to face Alistair. The dark storm raged, but Elena felt a new power rising—the locket at her throat grew warm, and a ghostly form materialized beside her: her father's spirit, translucent but strong.
"It's time," he said, his voice a whisper of wind.
Alistair's stare sharpened. "Impossible. I destroyed your soul."
"You destroyed my body. My soul remained bound to this locket, waiting for my daughter to free it."
Elena's father raised his hand, and the relic opened, a beam of pure light shooting toward Alistair. The dark storm recoiled, shrieking as the light pierced it. Alistair stumbled, his power wavering.
"Now!" her father shouted.
But before they could strike, Alistair unleashed a final, desperate wave of darkness. It slammed into the pack, killing three more wolves instantly. Elena's mother saw it coming—a spear of shadow aimed at Elena's heart.
"No!"
Her mother threw herself in front of Elena, the spear piercing her chest. She crumpled, blood pooling beneath her.
"Mom!" Elena caught her, cradling her as she fell. Her mother's eyes fluttered open, a faint smile on her lips.
"It's okay, my girl. I'm free now."
"Don't leave me. Please."
Her mother's hand reached up, touching Elena's cheek. "The locket... and your father's spirit... together, they can break his hold on the dark magic. Use them. End this."
"I can't do it without you."
"You can. You're stronger than you know."
Her mother's hand fell, and her eyes grew still. Elena sobbed, clutching her mother's body, the world blurring around her.
Damon was at her side, his hand on her shoulder. "Elena. We have to finish this. For her."
She looked up, her tears turning to fire. Alistair stood weakened, his storm flickering, but still alive. She rose, the silver pendant glowing, her father's spirit beside her.
"You took everything from me," she said, her voice low and steady. "My family, my freedom, my mother. But you made one mistake."
"And what's that?" Alistair sneered.
"You left me alive."
She raised the relic, and her father's spirit merged with the light, creating a spear of pure energy. Alistair tried to summon a shield, but the light shattered it. The spear struck him in the chest, and he screamed, his body dissolving into ash, the dark storm evaporating with him.
Silence fell over the clearing. The moon emerged from the clouds, casting pale light on the fallen. Elena dropped to her knees, her mother's body still in her arms, the locket cold against her chest.
Damon knelt beside her, pulling her close. "She's at peace now."
Elena nodded, but the weight of loss pressed down on her. Her mother's last words echoed in her mind: "The key to defeating Alistair lies in the locket and your father's spirit combined."
She looked at the relic, now dull and silent. Her father's spirit was gone, spent in the final blow. But something told her this wasn't the end. There was more to discover, more to fight for.
And she would. For her mother. For the pack. For herself.
