The cave trembled as the spectral wolf dissolved into mist, its ancient wail echoing through the stone. Elena's chest heaved, the locket burning against her skin. Damon stood beside her in human form, his hand still gripping her arm. "That was too close," he growled, his eyes scanning the darkness ahead. "The barrier is just beyond that archway. We need to move." Elena nodded, but her she sorted the danger fast. The locket had flared when the wolf attacked—not just with heat, but with a pulse of energy that had made her blood sing. She had felt it in her bones, a connection she didn't understand. They hurried through the narrow tunnel, the air growing thick with the smell of damp earth and old magic. The archway loomed before them, carved with symbols that glowed faintly red. Beyond it, a wall of shimmering crimson light blocked the passage, pulsing like a living heart. "The blood barrier," Damon said, his voice low. "Alistair's work. It requires a sacrifice to break—blood from a living wolf." Elena's stomach tightened. "How much?" "Enough to weaken a wolf significantly. If I do it, I'll be vulnerable. But there's no other way." She turned to face him, her jaw set. "No. You're the alpha. If you're weakened, we're both dead. I'll do it." "Absolutely not," Damon snapped, his eyes flashing with anger. "You're human. Your blood won't work on a barrier designed for wolf magic. And even if it did, I won't let you bleed for me." "You don't get to decide that," Elena shot back. "I've come this far. I'm not stopping now." "Elena—" "Listen to me." She stepped closer, her voice fierce. "You've protected me, saved me, dragged me through hell. But this is my fight too. Alistair wants the heart, and he wants you dead. If you collapse from blood loss, he wins. I won't let that happen." Damon's palms clenched at his sides. "You don't understand. The barrier feeds on the life force of the one who breaks it. It could kill you." "Then we find another way." She looked at the relic, still warm against her chest. "This thing—it reacted to the spectral wolf. It's tied to the magic here. Maybe it can amplify my blood, make it enough." "That's a theory, not a plan." "It's the only plan we have." She pulled the locket from her neck, the chain cool in her fingers. "Trust me." Damon stared at her, his expression torn between fury and something softer. "You're impossible." "I know." She turned to the barrier, her heart pounding. "I need a blade." He hesitated, then pulled a small knife from his belt. "If you pass out, I'm carrying you out of here." "Deal." She took the knife, her hand steady despite the fear coiling in her gut. She pressed the blade to her palm, wincing as it sliced through skin. Blood welled up, dark and warm. She pressed her hand against the barrier, the silver pendant pressed against her wound. Briefly, nothing happened. Then the barrier flared, the crimson light intensifying. Elena gasped as a searing pain shot through her arm, her blood being drawn into the barrier like a thirsty beast. She gritted her teeth, refusing to pull away. "Elena!" Damon grabbed her shoulder, but she shook him off. "Stay back!" The relic grew hot, burning against her palm. The symbols on the archway blazed, and the barrier began to crack, lines of white light spreading through the red. The cave shook, dust raining from the ceiling. "It's working," she breathed, but the pain was overwhelming. Her vision blurred, her knees buckling. Damon caught her, his arm around her waist. "Let go! It's breaking!" She couldn't. Her hand was stuck, the barrier pulling her blood faster. Desperation clawed at her. She focused on the locket, on the pulse of energy she had felt earlier. With the last of her strength, she pushed her will into it, demanding it to amplify her blood, to finish the job. The locket exploded with light. The barrier shattered into a thousand shards of crimson glass, dissolving into nothing. The cave groaned, and a deep rumble echoed from deeper within. Elena collapsed, but Damon caught her, lifting her into his arms. "I've got you." She looked up, dazed. "The heart..." "It's ahead. But we need to move—the barrier's destruction will have alerted Alistair." He carried her through the archway, into a chamber where a pedestal stood, a dark orb pulsating with black energy. The heart of the mountain. Elena reached out, her fingers brushing its surface. It was cold, dead, yet humming with power. "Take it," Damon urged. She grabbed it, and the moment her fingers closed around it, the cave shook violently. Cracks spiderwebbed across the walls, and the ceiling began to collapse. "Run!" Damon shifted, his wolf form surging as he grabbed her by the scruff of her jacket and bolted toward the exit. Stones crashed around them, the tunnel collapsing behind. Elena clutched the heart, her vision fading. They burst out into the open air, the night sky above them. The cave entrance collapsed in a cloud of dust. Damon set her down, panting, his fur matted with debris. Before she could catch her breath, a figure emerged from the shadows. Tall, cloaked in black, eyes burning with fury. Alistair. "You think you can steal from me?" His voice was a low snarl, magic crackling around his hands. "Give me the heart, and I might let you die quickly." Elena struggled to her feet, the heart cold in her hand. She looked at Damon, who stood protectively in front of her, his growl rumbling through the night. She raised the heart, its dark energy pulsing in time with her heartbeat. "Come and take it." Alistair laughed, a sound like grinding stone. "Foolish girl." He raised his hand, and a wave of dark magic surged toward them, black lightning tearing through the air. Elena thrust the heart forward, and it flared, absorbing the blast. The force threw her back, but she held on. Damon lunged at Alistair, but the sorcerer vanished, reappearing behind them. "You can't defeat me with my own weapon," he hissed. "The heart answers to its master." Elena looked at the orb in her hands, feeling its pull, its darkness. It wanted to obey Alistair. But she remembered the relic, how it had responded to her will. She focused, pouring her hatred, her fear, her desperation into the heart. It pulsed once, then again. A crack appeared on its surface. Alistair's stare sharpened. "No!" She squeezed, and the heart shattered, releasing a shockwave that sent them all flying. The dark magic dispersed, and Alistair screamed, his form flickering. "You... will pay..." He vanished, leaving only the echo of his threat. Elena lay on the ground, the pieces of the heart scattered around her. Damon stumbled to her side, his face pale. "You destroyed it." "It was the only way." She coughed, blood on her lips. "He can't use it now." Damon pulled her into his arms, his voice rough. "You reckless, brave, impossible woman." She smiled weakly. "I learned from the best." He kissed her forehead, and for one suspended second, the world was silent. But then a howl rose in the distance, and the ground trembled. Alistair was still out there. And he was coming.
