📖 Sold to the Alpha
Chapter 57: The Corrupted Land
The air changed as they crossed into Alistair's territory. It wasn't just the heat from the volcano ahead—it was the weight of something wrong. Elena felt it pressing against her skin, a low hum that vibrated in her bones. The locket around her neck grew warm, pulsing like a second heartbeat.
Damon walked beside her, his jaw tight, his eyes scanning the twisted landscape. The trees here weren't just dead—they were blackened, their branches contorted into shapes that looked almost human. The ground was cracked, veins of dark red glowing faintly beneath the surface.
"The corruption's spread faster than we thought," Kael said from behind, his voice low. He had a hand on his weapon, his knuckles white.
Elena clutched the locket. It had been her mother's—the only thing she'd managed to keep when her family sold her. But now it felt different. Alive.
"We need to move," Damon said. "The artifact is in the volcano's heart. If Alistair reaches it first, we lose everything."
They pushed forward, the path narrowing as they climbed. The heat intensified, sweat dripping down Elena's back, but the cold inside her chest only grew. The relic's warmth spread through her, a fragile shield against the corruption that clawed at her mind.
Then she heard it—a howl, but wrong. It was distorted, layered with static, like something that had once been a wolf was now something else. The sound echoed off the rocks, coming from all directions.
"They're here," Damon said.
The corrupted wolves emerged from the shadows. Their fur was matted, patches of skin showing through, their eyes glowing with the same sickly red as the cracks in the earth. There were dozens of them, their movements jerky and unnatural.
Elena's heartbeat kicked hard. She'd faced wolves before, but these were different—they were puppets, controlled by the corruption that seeped from the artifact.
Damon shifted, his body rippling as he took his wolf form. He was massive, his fur dark as night, his eyes blazing with alpha fire. He let out a roar that shook the ground, and the pack behind him followed suit.
The corrupted wolves attacked.
Chaos erupted. Elena stayed close to Damon, the locket glowing brighter as she held it out. The light pushed back the corruption, giving the pack an opening. She saw Kael take down two wolves, his movements precise. Another pack member, a young wolf named Rina, fought beside him.
But then Rina screamed.
A corrupted wolf had bitten her, and the corruption spread instantly—black veins crawling up her arm, her eyes glazing over. She turned on Kael, her fangs bared.
"Rina!" Kael shouted, but she was already lost.
Damon's growl was a command. "Put her down."
Kael's face twisted with grief, but he didn't hesitate. He drove his blade through her heart. She collapsed, her body dissolving into ash.
The remaining corrupted wolves retreated, melting back into the shadows.
Silence fell, heavy and broken. Elena's palms were shaking. She looked at the silver pendant, still warm, still pulsing. It had protected her, but it hadn't been enough for Rina.
"We can't keep going like this," she said, her voice raw. "The corruption will take us all before we reach the artifact."
Damon shifted back, his human form streaked with blood and sweat. "What do you suggest?"
Elena looked at the relic, then at the ground beneath her feet. The dark red veins pulsed, feeding the corruption. An idea formed, dangerous and desperate.
"The locket can purify the corruption," she said slowly. "But it needs a sacrifice."
Damon's eyes narrowed. "What kind of sacrifice?"
"My blood."
He stepped forward, his hand gripping her arm. "No."
"It's the only way," Elena said, pulling free. "We can't fight through an army of corrupted wolves. If I can cleanse a path, we can reach the volcano before Alistair's forces regroup."
"And if it kills you?"
She met his gaze, seeing the fear he tried to hide. "Then you'll have to finish this without me."
Before he could argue, she drew a knife from her belt and sliced her palm. Blood welled up, and she pressed her hand to the ground. The locket blazed, and the blood seeped into the cracks, spreading like water. Where it touched, the dark red veins receded, the ground turning clean and gray.
Elena gasped. The effort drained her, pulling strength from her core. She felt the corruption resist, pushing back, but she held on, forcing the relic's power deeper.
The area around them cleared—a circle of purity in the wasteland. But Elena's vision swam. Her knees buckled.
Damon caught her, his arms strong around her. "Enough."
She sagged against him, barely conscious. The silver pendant's warmth faded, and she felt the cold seep back in.
"It worked," she whispered. "We can move."
He lifted her, cradling her against his chest. "You're insane."
"But you love it." She tried to smile, but her lips felt numb.
A muscle jumped in his cheek. "Don't do that again."
"Can't promise."
The pack gathered, their eyes on the cleansed path ahead. Kael looked at Rina's ashes, then at Elena. "She bought us a chance. We don't waste it."
Damon nodded. "Move out. Stay close to Elena—the locket's light will protect you."
They advanced, the volcano looming closer. Elena's blood still dripped from her hand, staining the ground, but the corruption didn't return. She had bought them time.
But as they climbed, the relic grew cold. And Elena knew the price had only begun.
