📖 Sold to the Alpha
Chapter 53: The Witch Hunter
The pack house erupted into chaos as a dark sedan screeched to a halt in the circular driveway. Elena pressed herself against the window of Damon's study, watching three men in long black coats step out. The leader—a wiry man with silver-streaked hair and cold eyes—surveyed the property like a predator sizing up prey.
"Silas," Damon growled from behind her. His hand clamped on her shoulder, pulling her away from the glass. "He's early."
"Who is he?" Elena demanded, but Damon was already moving, barking orders into his phone. Kael burst through the door, a shotgun in his hands.
"Alpha, he's got a full strike team. We have five minutes, maybe less."
A muscle jumped in Damon's cheek. He turned to Elena, his eyes blazing with an intensity that made her stomach clench. "The locket. Where is it?"
"In my room," she said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline flooding her veins. "Why?"
"Because that's what he wants. Silas is a witch hunter. He's been tracking magical artifacts for decades. Your mother's coven—he destroyed them."
A cold hollow opened beneath Elena's ribs. "My mother was a witch?"
"A powerful one. The locket is the key to finding the coven's hidden power. Silas will kill everyone in this house to get it."
A deafening crash echoed from downstairs. Wood splintered, and the sound of snarling wolves filled the air. Damon grabbed Elena's palm, pulling her toward a hidden panel in the wall. "Kael, hold them off. Elena, with me."
They slipped through a narrow passage that led to a panic room deep in the basement. The walls were lined with reinforced steel, and a single monitor showed the carnage above. Silas's men moved with brutal efficiency, tearing through Damon's pack members like they were paper.
Her hand went to her pocket, where she had stashed the relic hours ago. She could feel its warmth against her thigh, pulsing like a second heartbeat. Damon noticed her gesture and cursed.
"You have it on you?"
"I wasn't going to leave it behind."
"Give it to me."
"No." Her voice was firm, surprising even herself. "This is all I have left of my mother. I'm not handing it over to some fanatic."
Damon's eyes flashed with anger, but before he could argue, the monitor showed Silas walking calmly through the front door. He held a device that glowed with a sickly green light, scanning the room.
"Elena Vance," Silas called out, his voice amplified by some spell. "I know you're here. Your mother stole that locket from my order. Return it, and I'll let your new pack live. Refuse, and I'll burn this place to the ground with everyone inside."
Elena's heartbeat kicked hard. She looked at Damon, who was already pulling weapons from a hidden cache. "He's lying," Damon said. "He'll kill us all regardless."
"Then we fight."
Damon handed her a small pistol. "Aim for the head. Silver bullets. They won't kill him, but they'll slow him down."
They crept back up the stairs, using the chaos as cover. The pack house was a warzone—bodies littered the floor, and the air reeked of blood and ozone. Silas stood in the center of the living room, his green device now pointing directly at the staircase.
"There you are."
Elena didn't hesitate. She raised the pistol and fired. The bullet struck Silas in the shoulder, spinning him around. He let out a roar of pain, but the wound didn't bleed—it smoked, sealing itself almost instantly.
"Silver? Cute." He laughed, a cold, hollow sound. "Your mother used the same trick. It didn't save her either."
Damon lunged, shifting mid-air into his wolf form. His massive black body slammed into Silas, sending them both crashing through a window. Elena ran to the edge, watching the fight below. Damon was strong, but Silas moved with supernatural speed, his hands crackling with dark energy.
A bolt of green fire struck Damon's flank, and he yelped, staggering. Elena felt a surge of rage—and something else. The locket grew hot against her skin, and a voice whispered in her mind: "Use me."
She pulled the silver pendant from her pocket, its surface glowing with an ethereal light. Without thinking, she pressed it to her chest, and power flooded through her. Her senses sharpened, and she could see the threads of magic weaving through the air—Silas's attack, Damon's wolf form, the protective wards around the house.
She reached out and pulled a thread. Silas's spell unraveled, and he screamed, clutching his hands as the green fire backfired. Damon took advantage, pinning him to the ground.
"Kill me, and you'll never find the coven," Silas spat. "Your mother's power is hidden, and only I know where."
Elena stepped forward, the relic still warm in her hand. "Then tell me."
"Or what? You'll torture me? You don't have the stomach for it."
Damon's claws pressed deeper into Silas's throat. "She might not, but I do."
Silas laughed again, blood trickling from his mouth. "You're too late. I've already placed a bounty on her head. Every mercenary and rogue wolf in the country will be hunting her. You can't protect her forever, Alpha."
Damon snarled, but Elena placed a hand on his fur. "Let him go."
"What?"
"He's baiting us. If we kill him, we'll never know the truth. And I need to know who my mother was."
Damon shifted back, his body tense. "He'll come for you again."
"Then I'll be ready." Elena looked at Silas, her voice cold. "You said the locket is the key to the coven's power. That means it's also the key to destroying it. If I can't find the coven, I'll make sure no one can."
Silas's stare sharpened in fear for the first time. "You wouldn't."
"Try me."
Damon hauled Silas to his feet and shoved him toward Kael, who had appeared with a pair of silver handcuffs. "Lock him in the basement. We'll deal with him later."
As Silas was dragged away, Elena sagged against the wall, the locket's warmth fading. Damon was at her side instantly, his hand cupping her face. "That was reckless."
"But it worked."
"For now. He's not wrong about the bounty. We need to move you somewhere safe."
"No." Elena met his eyes. "I'm done hiding. If Silas wants a war, I'll give him one. But first, I need to find the remnants of my mother's coven. The relic showed me something—a location. We need to go there."
Damon's expression locked down, but he nodded. "We leave at dawn."
"Good." Elena pocketed the silver pendant, her mind racing. She could feel Silas's presence still, a dark thread in the magical fabric. He was already tracking her, even from the basement. And she knew, with a certainty that chilled her to the bone, that this was only the beginning.
