📖 Sold to the Alpha
Chapter 42: The Ambush
The knife was cold in Elena's palm, a stolen piece of silver from the penthouse kitchen. She had hidden it in her boot the moment Damon left for the pack meeting. Now, as she crept down the service stairwell, the blade felt like the only thing she could trust.
The letter from Aldric burned in her memory. "Meet me at the ruins of Blackmoor Keep. Come alone." She had memorized every word before she burned it. The ruins were an hour's drive outside the city, a place where the old magic still lingered. Damon would never let her go. But she had to know what Aldric knew about her mother's past.
The stairwell opened into a narrow alley behind the penthouse. Rain slicked the cobblestones, and the streetlights cast long shadows. Elena pulled her hood up and moved fast, her footsteps silent on the wet pavement. She had almost reached the corner when she felt it—a shift in the air, a scent of wolf and wet earth.
They came from both ends of the alley. Three men in masks, their eyes gleaming amber in the dark. No words. Just the click of claws extending from their fingertips.
Elena didn't hesitate. She dropped into a crouch and drew the knife. The first attacker lunged, and she sidestepped, slashing across his arm. He howled and fell back, blood spraying black against the rain. The second came from behind, grabbing her shoulder. She spun and drove the knife into his thigh. He grunted but didn't let go. His grip tightened, and she felt her feet leave the ground as he threw her against the wall.
Pain exploded in her ribs. The knife clattered out of her hand. She gasped, struggling to breathe, as the third attacker approached, a silver chain dangling from his fist. He wrapped it around her throat and pulled tight. The silver burned against her skin, and she choked, her vision going dark at the edges.
"You're coming with us," he growled.
Her hand found a loose brick beside her. She swung it hard against his temple. His grip loosened, and she tore the chain away, gasping for air. She scrambled for the knife, but the first attacker was already on his feet, his wound already healing. He grabbed her ankle and dragged her across the pavement.
A roar split the night. Damon.
He came out of the shadows like a storm, his eyes blazing gold, his claws extended. Behind him, Kael and two other pack warriors fanned out. The masked wolves turned to face them, but it was over in seconds. Damon took down the one holding Elena's ankle with a single blow to the chest. Kael disarmed the second. The third tried to run, but Damon caught him by the throat and slammed him against the wall.
"Who sent you?" Damon's voice was low, dangerous.
The wolf laughed, blood spilling from his lips. "You'll find out soon enough. The Crimson Fang is back. And they want the girl dead."
Damon's grip tightened. "Where is their new alpha?"
"I don't know. I was just hired to retrieve the letter. Someone wants it back."
"What letter?" Damon asked.
Elena's heart stopped. The letter. The one she had burned. But how did they know?
The wolf smiled. "The one she took from the fire. It's more than a message. It's a map. To the old alpha's grave. To what he hid."
Damon's eyes flickered to Elena. She saw the question there, the suspicion. She had kept the letter from him. She had planned to go alone.
"Take him to the cells," Damon ordered. "I'll get answers."
Kael dragged the wolf away. Damon knelt beside Elena, his hand gentle on her jaw as he examined the burn marks on her throat. "You're hurt."
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine. You're bleeding. And you were about to run off alone."
She met his gaze. "I had to know."
"Know what? That you can't trust me?" His voice cracked. "Elena, I almost lost you."
"You don't understand. That letter—"
"Tell me."
She hesitated. The rain dripped down her face, mixing with the blood on her lips. "It's from Aldric. He wants to meet me at Blackmoor Keep. He says he knew my mother. That she wasn't what Marcus said she was."
Damon's expression locked down. "It's a trap."
"Maybe. But I have to go."
"No. You're not going alone."
"Damon—"
"I'm coming with you." He pulled her to her feet, his arm around her waist. "We do this together. That's not negotiable."
She wanted to argue, but the pain in her ribs made her dizzy. She leaned into him, letting him support her weight. "Why? Why do you care?"
He looked at her, his eyes softening. "Because you're mine, Elena. And I protect what's mine."
She didn't have the strength to push him away. Not tonight. Not when the world was crashing down around them. She let him lead her back into the penthouse, where the warmth and the light felt like a lie.
Later, after the wounds were bandaged and the pack had gone, Damon sat beside her on the bed. He took her hand, his thumb tracing circles on her palm. "I meant what I said. I'll protect you. No matter what."
"Even if I'm the one who betrayed your pack?"
"You were forced. I know that now."
"It doesn't change what I did."
"It changes everything." He lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his eyes. "We're past that, Elena. We're past the contracts and the secrets. I see you. And I choose you."
Her breath stopped short. The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. She wanted to believe him. But trust was a fragile thing, and she had learned the hard way that people lied.
Before she could answer, her phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number. She opened it and her ice threaded through her pulse.
"Meet me at the ruins of Blackmoor Keep. Come alone. — Aldric"
She showed Damon. His face hardened. "We go tomorrow. Together."
"What if it's a trap?"
"Then we spring it. And we end this."
She nodded, her heart racing. Tomorrow, she would face the ruins and the secrets buried there. But tonight, she let herself rest against Damon's chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart. For the first time in weeks, she didn't feel alone.
But in the darkness, a shadow moved. A figure watched from the rooftop across the street, a phone pressed to its ear. "She's with the alpha. The letter is compromised. The plan is in motion."
A cold voice replied. "Good. Let them come to the ruins. We'll be waiting."
