The execution ground was a stretch of cold stone behind the Vance estate, lit by torches that spat black smoke into the night. Elena stood at the center, her wrists bound with silver chains that burned against her skin. The pack elders flanked her father, Marcus, who held a ceremonial blade that gleamed with the same sickly light as his eyes. "For the crime of treason against your bloodline," Marcus intoned, his voice carrying across the gathered wolves, "you are sentenced to death." Elena lifted her chin. The pain from the silver was a familiar friend now, sharp and clean. She had expected this moment, planned for it. The evidence she had gathered over months—recordings, documents, witness accounts—was hidden in a secure location, ready to be released if she didn't check in. But that was a failsafe, not a victory. She wanted more than survival. She wanted him to fall. A howl split the night, deep and primal, and the ground trembled. Damon's pack poured from the surrounding forest, their eyes glowing gold in the darkness. The elders spun, snarling, but the Crimson Fang wolves were faster. Chaos erupted as bodies collided, claws and fangs tearing through the orderly execution. Elena didn't wait. She wrenched her hands apart, the silver chains snapping with a burst of pain that made her gasp. Damon had taught her that trick—how to break a binding by focusing all her strength into a single, explosive motion. She lunged for the blade that had clattered to the ground, scooping it up as Marcus turned to face the attack. "You think this changes anything?" he roared, shifting mid-stride. His wolf form was massive, scarred from years of dominance battles. He charged at her, jaws wide. Elena sidestepped, using his momentum against him. She slashed the blade across his flank, and he howled in fury. But he recovered quickly, circling back with a snarl. "I have everything," she said, her voice steady despite the burning in her lungs. "The recordings of your deals with the Crimson Fang. The contracts you signed to sell pack members. The testimony of the wolves you exiled." He laughed, a guttural sound. "No one will believe you. I am the alpha." "Not anymore." She pulled a small device from her pocket—a recorder she had kept hidden in her boot. Pressing play, his voice filled the clearing: "...deliver Elena to the Crimson Fang alpha. In exchange, they will support my claim over the northern territories..." The fighting around them slowed as pack members turned to listen. The elders exchanged glances, their expressions shifting from fury to doubt. Marcus lunged again, but Elena was ready. She dropped the recorder and met his charge, driving the blade deep into his chest. He staggered, his wolf form flickering, and collapsed to the ground. Blood pooled beneath him, dark and thick. "You..." he gasped, shifting back to human. "You're no daughter of mine." "I know." She knelt beside him, her eyes cold. "I found my mother's letter. The one you hid. I know who my real father was—the alpha you murdered to take this pack." His eyes flashed wide, then glazed over. The last breath rattled from his lungs, and the pack fell silent. Damon appeared at her side, blood streaked across his face. "It's done." She nodded, but her chest felt hollow. The victory she had dreamed of for years tasted like ash. She turned to face the pack, the blade still in her hand. "Marcus Vance is dead," she announced. "His crimes are known. I claim this pack as my birthright." A murmur rippled through the crowd. Then one elder stepped forward, lowering his head. "Alpha." One by one, the others followed. Elena felt the weight of their loyalty settle on her shoulders, a burden she hadn't fully anticipated. She glanced at Damon, who gave a slight nod of approval. Hours later, the estate was quiet. The dead had been taken away, the wounded tended to. Elena sat in her father's—no, her—study, staring at a letter she had found in a hidden compartment of his desk. The handwriting was her mother's, delicate and faded. *My dearest Elena, If you are reading this, then I am gone, and the truth can no longer harm me. The man you call father is not your blood. Your real father was Alexander Thorn, alpha of the Shadowmoon pack, murdered by Marcus in a cowardly ambush. I was forced into this marriage to protect you. If Marcus ever shows you my body, distrust it. Blood can be made to wear a face, and the dead can be forged from what the living are forced to give. The enemy who orchestrated Alexander’s death is still out there—an ancient council that controls the packs from the shadows. They will come for you when they learn you know the truth. Be strong. Be cunning. And never trust the silence.* Elena's fingers trembled. She read the letter again, the words burning into her mind. Damon entered the room, his footsteps soft. "What is it?" he asked. She handed him the letter without speaking. He read it, his jaw tightening. "Shadow council," he murmured. "I thought they were a myth." "They're real," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "And they killed my father. The alpha Marcus tried to erase." Damon's eyes met hers, a storm of emotions flickering in their depths. "Then we have a new enemy." Elena folded the letter and tucked it into her pocket. Damon stood close enough that his shoulder brushed hers, a silent promise rather than a command. After all the chains and contracts, that restraint nearly undid her. She let herself lean into him for one breath before straightening. The victory she had won tonight was only the beginning. The real war was just starting.
