The footage flickered to life on the laptop screen, grainy and silent, but clear enough to turn Elena's blood to ice. She had stolen back into her room after the cemetery, her hands still trembling from the cold earth and her father's grip, and now she sat cross-legged on the bed, the stolen drive plugged into the USB port. The file was labeled simply: "VANCE_M_001." Her mother's name. She pressed play. The image was dark at first, then resolved into a view of the Vance estate's basement—the same basement where her father kept his private safe, where the smell of mildew and old blood clung to the walls. Two figures moved into frame. Marcus Vance, in his tailored suit, his face a mask of cold efficiency. And beside him, Kael. Damon's beta. The man who had sworn loyalty to the Blackwood pack. The air caught behind her ribs. Kael's presence here was impossible. He had been at the penthouse this morning, reporting to Damon about pack movements. How could he be in her father's basement, on the same day the thing wearing her mother's face was moved? The footage showed them dragging a large, dark bag across the concrete floor. Elena knew what she was supposed to think before they unzipped it. Her mother's face, pale and slack, emerged into the dim light. Elena's stomach heaved, but she forced herself to watch. The skin looked too smooth. The wrist showed no scar. This was evidence, but not of a clean death. This was proof Marcus had manufactured something obscene. Marcus said something to Kael, his lips moving soundlessly. Kael nodded and pointed to a corner of the basement. The camera angle shifted, and Elena saw a map pinned to the wall behind a stack of boxes. It was a hand-drawn map of the Vance territory, with red circles marking three locations: the old mill, the hunting cabin, and a third place she didn't recognize—a small island in the middle of the lake. The staged body was moved to the corner near the map, and Marcus pulled out a phone, making a call. Kael stood guard, his eyes scanning the room. Then the footage ended. Elena sat back, her mind racing. Her father and Kael were working together. Kael was a traitor inside Damon's pack. And the staged body had been moved, not to a new grave, but to a holding location—probably to prevent anyone from testing what it really was. The map was the key. Those locations were where her father kept his secrets. Maybe even the proof of his deal with the Crimson Fang. She memorized the map: the mill, the cabin, the island. She repeated the coordinates in her head until they were seared into her memory. Then she deleted the file, ejected the drive, and snapped it in half. The pieces went into her pocket. She would dispose of them later. A knock at the door made her jump. "Elena." Her father's voice, smooth and cold. "Dinner tonight. We have a feast to celebrate the alliance with the Crimson Fang. You will attend, and you will pledge your loyalty." Her heart hammered. The feast. She had forgotten. The alliance was being formalized tonight, and she was expected to play the obedient daughter. But now she had information. And she had a plan. She opened the door, her face a mask of compliance. "Of course, Father. I'll be ready." Marcus studied her for the space of a breath, his eyes narrowed. "See that you are. The Crimson Fang's alpha will be there. You will not embarrass me." "I won't." She kept her voice steady, her hands still. He turned and walked away. Elena closed the door and let out a shaky breath. She had hours. Hours to prepare. The feast was held in the grand hall of the Vance estate, a cavernous room with chandeliers and long tables laden with roasted meat and wine. Elena wore a deep blue gown her father had chosen, the fabric heavy and restrictive, but she had hidden a small vial in the folds of her sleeve. A sedative, stolen from the medical cabinet in Damon's penthouse. Enough to knock out a wolf for an hour. She moved through the crowd, smiling, nodding, playing the part of the dutiful daughter. The Crimson Fang's alpha, a man named Viktor, watched her with hungry eyes. She avoided his gaze. She found her father near the head of the table, speaking with Kael. Kael. Traitor. Her fingers itched to expose him, but she needed more proof. She needed the map's secrets. When the toasts began, Elena positioned herself near her father. She watched him lift his glass, his voice booming with promises of power and blood. She waited until he set the glass down, then moved close, her hand brushing the rim as if reaching for a napkin. The vial was open. A single drop of the clear liquid slid into his wine. He didn't notice. Minutes later, his eyes grew heavy. He shook his head, trying to focus, but the sedative was fast-acting. He excused himself, stumbling toward his study. Elena watched him go, her heart pounding. The feast continued. Viktor was distracted by Lydia, who had draped herself over him like a trophy. Elena slipped away, her skirts rustling as she moved through the corridors toward her father's office. She was halfway there when the first explosion shook the estate. The ground trembled. Glass shattered. Screams erupted from the grand hall. Elena grabbed a wall to steady herself. Gunfire. Howls. The unmistakable sound of a pack attack. Damon. He had come for her. The chaos was immediate. Wolves shifted in the hall, furniture overturned, and the Crimson Fang's warriors poured out to meet the attackers. Elena didn't hesitate. She ran toward her father's office, using the distraction to her advantage. The door was locked. She kicked it open, her shoulder screaming in protest. Inside, the room was dark, lit only by the moonlight through the window. She crossed to the safe, her fingers finding the combination from memory—her mother's birthday. The lock clicked. Inside were documents, cash, and a small leather-bound journal. She grabbed the journal and shoved it into her dress. Then she heard footsteps. She spun, ready to fight, but it was Kael, his eyes blazing, his claws extended. "Elena," he snarled. "You shouldn't be here." She backed against the desk, her hand closing around a letter opener. "You're a traitor, Kael. I saw the footage." His face twisted. "You saw nothing. And you won't live to tell anyone." He lunged. She threw the letter opener, but he batted it aside. His hand closed around her throat, slamming her against the wall. She gasped, clawing at his arm, her vision darkening. Then the window exploded inward. Damon landed in the room, his wolf form massive and furious. He ripped Kael away from her, his jaws closing around the beta's shoulder. Kael howled, struggling, but Damon threw him through the broken window. The sound of a body hitting the ground below was final. Damon shifted back, blood on his hands, his chest heaving. He crossed to her, cupping her face. "Are you hurt?" She shook her head, her throat raw. "I have it. A journal. The map. He moved the fake body." Damon's eyes darkened. "We need to go. Now." Outside, the battle raged. But Elena had what she needed. And she wasn't leaving without answers. "Not yet," she said, pulling away. "I need to see what's in this journal."
