The tunnel stretched ahead, damp and dark, the walls slick with moisture that dripped in a steady rhythm. Elena followed Damon, her breathing shallow, every sense on high alert. The package she'd found—the ledger, the burner phone, the photograph—was tucked inside her jacket, a weight that felt heavier than lead. Kael had been meeting with someone from the Crimson Fang. And her father had known all along. "Stop," Damon whispered, his hand shooting out to press against her chest. She froze, her heart hammering. He tilted his head, listening. The tunnel curved ahead, the faint glow of a streetlight filtering through a grate above. "Something's wrong." Before she could ask, the ground beneath them shifted. A trapdoor gave way, and she plummeted, her scream lost in the rush of air. She hit concrete hard, the impact jarring through her bones. Pain exploded in her ankle as she tried to stand, but Damon was already beside her, hauling her up. "Move!" he growled. They were in a basement—old, musty, lined with crates. The door at the far end burst open, and light flooded in. Figures silhouetted against the glare. Elena's pulse turned cold as she recognized the voice that followed. "I knew you'd come, daughter." Marcus Vance stepped into the light, his smile thin and cruel. Behind him, a dozen armed men fanned out, their eyes glinting with wolfish hunger. And beside her father, Lydia stood, her arms crossed, a triumphant smirk on her face. "Lydia," Elena breathed, the betrayal slicing through her. "Did you really think I'd let you ruin everything?" Lydia's voice was sweet, mocking. "You've always been the reckless one, Elena. Running off with your little secrets. But Father and I have been planning this for months." His fingers found hers, squeezing once. A silent message. Together. "You sold me out," Elena said, her voice steady despite the rage coiling in her chest. "You tipped them off." "Of course I did. You think I'd let you steal my inheritance? My pack?" Lydia laughed, a brittle sound. "You were always the favored one, but not anymore. Not after tonight." Marcus took a step forward, his eyes fixed on Damon. "Alpha Blackwood. I must say, I didn't expect you to fall for such an obvious trap. But then, you always did have a weakness for my daughter." "I have no weakness for traitors," Damon said, his voice low and dangerous. "Then you won't mind if I take her back," Marcus said. "The contract is void if you're dead." The men moved. Elena didn't wait. She lunged for the nearest crate, using it as cover as she pulled a knife from her boot. Damon shifted, his body rippling with the change, fur and fangs tearing through his skin. He met the first attacker with a snarl, claws raking across the man's chest. Elena moved through the chaos, her mind sharp. She couldn't match their strength, but she could outthink them. She grabbed a length of pipe from the floor, swinging it hard against a man's knee. He crumpled, and she kicked him aside. "Lydia!" she shouted, spotting her sister slipping toward the exit. "You don't get to run!" She pursued, ignoring the pain in her ankle. Lydia turned, a blade flashing in her hand. They clashed, steel against steel, the ring of metal echoing off the walls. "You've always been jealous," Elena said, parrying a strike. "But this? Selling me to the Crimson Fang?" "Jealous?" Lydia spat. "You were Father's favorite. He was going to give you everything. I had to take it back." "He sold me, Lydia. He sold me for power. That's not favor." Lydia's eyes flickered, but she pressed the attack. Elena sidestepped, grabbing her sister's wrist and twisting. The knife clattered to the ground. In one fluid motion, Elena swept it up and pressed it against Lydia's throat. "Call them off," Elena said, her voice cold. Lydia's breath hitched. "You wouldn't." "Try me." The fighting stopped. Marcus turned, his face twisting with fury as he saw his youngest daughter held at knifepoint. "Let her go, Elena," he growled. "Order your men to stand down, or I'll slit her throat." For a long moment, the two faced off. Then Marcus laughed, a hollow sound. "You've grown teeth. But you're still a child playing a game." He raised his hand, signaling his men to retreat. They melted into the shadows, disappearing back through the door. Lydia struggled, but Elena held her tight. "This isn't over," Marcus said, his eyes burning with hatred. "You can't hide forever, Elena. And when I find you, I'll make sure you suffer for every moment of defiance." He disappeared into the darkness. Elena released Lydia, shoving her away. "Get out of my sight." Lydia scrambled to her feet, her face pale with fear. She fled. Silence fell. Elena turned, searching for Damon. He was on the ground, his human form barely holding together. A dark stain spread across his chest, and she saw it—a silver bullet lodged in his side. "Damon!" She ran to him, dropping to her knees. His eyes were glazed, his breath shallow. "Get out... leave me..." "No." She tore off her jacket, pressing it against the wound. "You don't get to die. Not now. Not when I just found you." She looked around. The basement was empty, but the tunnel above was blocked. They were trapped. She had to carry him out, but he was too heavy. She gritted her teeth, hooking her arms under his shoulders and dragging him toward the stairs. He groaned, blood soaking through her makeshift bandage. "Stay with me," she whispered, her voice breaking. "Please." The steps seemed endless. Each one a battle. But she kept moving, her muscles screaming, her heart pounding. She would not let him die. She would not lose him. At the top, she pushed open a door and stumbled into an alley. The cold night air hit her face. She looked down at Damon, his face pale, his breathing ragged. "Help!" she screamed into the empty street. "Someone help!" No one came. She was alone. And Damon was dying in her arms.
