📖 Sold to the Alpha
Chapter 12: The Secret Passage
The passage smelled of dust and old concrete. Elena pressed her back against the wall, her flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. Behind her, Damon lay unconscious in the penthouse bedroom, his wound bandaged with her torn shirt. She had ten minutes, maybe fifteen, before Kael returned.
The tunnel stretched ahead, narrow and low-ceilinged. She moved quickly, her bare feet silent on the cold floor. The air grew cooler, carrying a metallic tang she couldn't place. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but she forced herself forward.
Twenty feet in, the passage opened into a small room. She swept the light across the space and froze.
Weapons. Rows of them.
Knives lined the walls on magnetic strips—hunting knives, throwing blades, a curved dagger she recognized as silver-tipped. Below, a rack held rifles and handguns, their barrels gleaming. In the corner, a steel cabinet stood ajar, revealing vials of amber liquid and syringes.
Elena swallowed hard. This wasn't a panic room. It was an armory.
She stepped inside, her fingers trailing over a blade. The silver tip caught the light. Werewolf hunters used silver. Why would an alpha keep silver weapons?
A soft hum drew her attention to the far wall. A monitor glowed, showing a split-screen view of the penthouse—the living room, the kitchen, the hallway outside Damon's bedroom. Her air snagged in her lungs. She was being watched. Or rather, Damon had been watching everything.
She moved to the console, her eyes scanning the feeds. One camera showed Kael pacing in the hallway, his phone pressed to his ear. Another showed the front door of the building, where a man in a dark coat stood waiting.
Her fingers found a drawer beneath the monitors. She pulled it open and found files—manila folders, each labeled with a name. She flipped through them, her pulse quickening. Marcus Vance. Her father's file was thick, filled with surveillance photos and financial records. She pulled it out and opened it.
Inside was a map of her father's estate, marked with guard rotations and weak points. A sticky note read: "Access via drainage tunnel, east wing. Two-minute window."
Her heart raced. This was the key. If she could get to her father, she could end this. She could make him pay for selling her, for the years of silence, for her mother's suffering.
She pulled out her phone and photographed every page. The evidence was here—proof of her father's dealings, his connection to the Crimson Fang, his plans to eliminate Damon. She would use it all.
A voice echoed from the hallway. Kael.
"...as soon as he wakes, we move. The deal is done. She's served her purpose."
Elena's blood turned cold. She crept to the doorway, pressing herself against the wall.
"Marcus wants her alive," Kael continued, his voice low. "But I say we bury her with the alpha. She knows too much."
A pause. Then: "No witnesses. Make it look like a rogue attack. I'll handle the body."
Elena's fingers trembled. Kael was planning to kill her. And Damon—would he let it happen? Or was he part of this?
She slipped back into the armory, her mind racing. She couldn't stay. She couldn't leave. The passage was her only escape, but if she ran, she'd lose the evidence. She'd lose her chance at revenge.
A sound—footsteps, approaching the passage entrance.
She grabbed the silver-tipped dagger and shoved it into her waistband. Then she tucked the file under her arm and moved deeper into the tunnel, her flashlight off, her hand tracing the wall.
The passage branched. Left or right? She chose left, praying it led to an exit.
Behind her, the footsteps grew louder. A flashlight beam swept the corridor.
"Elena?" Kael's voice echoed. "I know you're in here. Come out, and I'll make it quick."
She pressed herself into a alcove, holding her breath. The beam passed within inches of her face.
Kael muttered something and moved past. She waited until his footsteps faded, then exhaled.
She had to get back to Damon. She had to warn him. But first, she needed to find the exit.
The tunnel ended at a steel door. She pushed it open and stepped into a stairwell. The air smelled of mold and urine. She climbed, her legs burning, until she reached a door marked "ROOF."
She pushed it open and stepped into the cold night air. The city sprawled below, a grid of lights. She was free. But freedom meant nothing if Damon died.
Her phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number: "Your mother is safe. For now. Come home, and she lives. Stay with him, and she dies."
Elena's stomach dropped. Her father had her mother. Again.
She looked back at the penthouse. Damon was in there, unconscious, vulnerable. Kael was hunting her. And her father had the ultimate leverage.
She had to choose.
Her hand went to the dagger at her waist. She thought of Damon's eyes, the way they softened when he looked at her. She thought of her mother's face.
Then she thought of the file in her hands. The map. The weakness in her father's security.
She turned and walked back inside.
Damon needed her. And she needed him alive to finish this.
She descended the stairs, her mind made up. She would warn him. She would show him the file. And then they would take the fight to her father together.
But when she reached the penthouse, the bedroom door was open. The bed was empty.
Damon was gone.
