📖 Sold to the Alpha
Chapter 5: The Ultimatum
The phone felt heavier than it should, a dead weight in Elena’s palm as she stared at the dark screen. The penthouse was silent, the hum of the city far below the only sound. Damon had been gone for two hours. Long enough for her to make a decision.
She had found the phone three days ago, wedged between the mattress and the box spring, left behind by a previous guest or planted by someone who wanted her to have it. The burner was untraceable, the single contact listed only as “M.” Her mother.
Elena’s thumb hovered over the call button. She had memorized the number, but she hadn’t dialed. Not yet. Because calling meant risking everything. The silence contract binding her throat would tighten, the magical mark on her collarbone would burn, and Damon would know.
But her mother’s life was on the line. Marcus had made that clear before she was sold. “You will do as I say, or Lydia will suffer for your defiance.” Lydia—her sister, her mother’s favorite. The threat was always the same: hurt me, and I hurt them.
A floorboard creaked behind her.
Elena’s blood turned to ice. She shoved the phone under the pillow, spinning around with her heart hammering. Damon stood in the doorway, his broad shoulders filling the frame, his dark eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her want to shrink back.
“What are you hiding?” His voice was low, calm—the kind of calm that preceded a storm.
“Nothing.” The lie tasted bitter on her tongue.
He stepped forward, each footfall deliberate, predatory. “I can smell your fear, Elena. And the metal of a phone. You’ve been using it.”
She backed up until her knees hit the bed. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
He stopped inches from her, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. His hand moved past her, reaching under the pillow. Her lungs stalled. He pulled out the phone, his expression darkening as he turned it over.
“Who is ‘M’?”
“My mother.” The words escaped before she could stop them.
A muscle jumped in his cheek. “You’ve been contacting her. Against my orders.”
“She’s in danger!” Elena’s voice cracked. “My father threatened to kill her if I don’t do what he says. I had to—”
“Had to what?” Damon’s hand shot out, gripping her wrist. “Betray me? The contract binds you to silence, Elena. Every word you speak to her is a violation.”
Pain lanced through her arm as the mark on her collarbone flared. She gasped, trying to pull away, but his grip only tightened.
“I’m not betraying you,” she hissed through gritted teeth. “I’m trying to save my family.”
“Your family sold you.” His voice was cold, but something flickered in his eyes—a crack in the ice. “Why would you risk everything for them?”
“Because she’s my mother.” Tears burned behind her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “You wouldn’t understand.”
He stared at her for a long moment, the tension crackling between them. Then, slowly, he released her wrist. The pain subsided, leaving a dull ache.
“I’ll find out anyway,” he said, his tone softer now, almost resigned. “You’re not as good at hiding as you think.”
“Then maybe you should let me explain.” She rubbed her wrist, watching him warily.
Damon turned away, pacing to the window. The city lights glittered below, indifferent to the drama unfolding in the penthouse. “You have two choices, Elena. Trust me, or face the consequences. If you keep secrets, the contract will punish you. If you tell me everything, I might be able to protect your mother.”
“Why would you do that?”
“Because I’m not your enemy.”
She wanted to believe him. But trust was a luxury she couldn’t afford. Not after everything.
Before she could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the penthouse. They both froze. Damon’s eyes narrowed as he strode to the door, his body tense.
He opened it to reveal a courier, holding a sealed envelope. Damon took it, dismissing the man with a curt nod. He tore it open, scanning the contents. His face hardened.
“What is it?” Elena asked, her stomach knotting.
He handed her the note without a word. Her eyes devoured the words:
*Your mother’s life for Damon’s death. Choose by midnight. If you fail, she dies. —Marcus*
A cold hollow opened beneath Elena's ribs. The paper trembled in her hands. Her father had given her an ultimatum: kill the alpha who had bought her, or lose the only family she had left.
She looked up at Damon, her vision blurring. He was watching her with an unreadable expression, but she caught the flash of vulnerability beneath the mask.
“What are you going to do?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Elena’s throat tightened. The phone was still in his hand. The dagger was still hidden beneath the mattress. And now, a deadline.
She didn’t have an answer. Not one she could say aloud.
If she warned Damon, Marcus might kill the woman Elena had spent her whole life trying to protect. If she obeyed Marcus, she would become exactly what her father had always called her: a weapon with a pretty face and no will of her own. The silence contract pulsed at her collarbone, hungry for the lie it knew she was about to tell.
Damon stepped closer, lowering his voice until it was almost gentle. “Elena. If you are thinking about killing me, look me in the eye and make it count.”
Her fingers twitched toward the mattress.
He saw it. Of course he saw it.
The city lights flashed behind him like a countdown. Midnight was coming. Marcus had made his choice. Now Elena had to make hers: blood, betrayal, or the one impossible truth that might get them both killed.
