Night in Los Angeles had a way of making everything feel cinematic. The city lights stretched endlessly beneath the hills, glowing like fallen stars across the horizon. Music drifted through the open doors of the studio lounge, mixing with laughter, champagne glasses clinking, and the distant roar of Hollywood traffic. Inside the crowded celebration party, Macy Cole stood near the balcony rail, gripping her glass of sparkling water like it was a lifeline. Just two weeks ago, she had been a stunt double barely scraping by. Now she had an actual role in a major production. Director Jack Hunter’s newest film had wrapped its first round of shooting, and tonight’s small celebration party was filled with actors, producers, and people who looked like they belonged on red carpets. Macy still felt like she had accidentally wandered into someone else’s life. “You’re staring again.” A familiar voice broke through her thoughts. Macy turned and found Zoe Miller stepping beside her, holding a martini. “I’m not staring,” Macy said quickly. Zoe smirked. “You’ve been scanning the room every ten seconds.” She leaned closer. “Looking for him?” Macy flushed. “I’m not—” “You are.” Zoe followed her gaze across the room. And there he was. Nicholas Thorne stood near the far wall speaking quietly with Jack Hunter. Even surrounded by Hollywood elites, he commanded attention effortlessly. Tall. Dark suit perfectly tailored. Sharp jawline illuminated by the warm lights. He looked less like an investor and more like a man carved from shadow and power. Macy’s heart fluttered in her chest. She hated how easily he affected her. “He’s staring at you,” Zoe murmured. Macy’s breath caught. Across the room, Nicholas’s dark eyes were fixed directly on her. Not casually. Not politely. Intensely. Like she was the only person in the entire room. Then, as if sensing her attention, he excused himself from Jack and began walking toward her. Macy’s pulse skyrocketed. “Oh my god,” she whispered. Zoe grinned. “Well, I’ll leave you two alone.” Before Macy could protest, Zoe disappeared into the crowd. And suddenly Nicholas stood in front of her. Up close, he seemed even more overwhelming. His presence carried a quiet gravity that made the air feel heavier. “You look better,” he said softly. Macy blinked. “What?” “On set earlier,” he clarified. “You nearly fainted.” Embarrassment burned her cheeks. “Oh. That.” She forced a laugh. “I guess I forgot to eat.” Nicholas studied her carefully. He knew that wasn’t the truth. His senses had detected the faint trace of chemicals in the water bottle she drank earlier. Sleeping agents. Weak ones. But enough to cause dizziness. Someone had tampered with her drink. His gaze flickered briefly across the crowded room. Valentino’s scent lingered somewhere nearby. Danger was moving closer. “You should be more careful,” Nicholas said quietly. Macy tilted her head. “Careful about what?” He hesitated. About trusting the wrong people. About being hunted by creatures she didn’t even know existed. But he couldn’t say any of that. “Hollywood isn’t always kind,” he finally said. Macy smiled faintly. “Trust me, I already figured that out.” For a moment neither of them spoke. Music pulsed softly in the background. Then Nicholas held out his hand. “Dance with me.” Macy blinked. “Here?” “Unless you prefer the parking lot.” She laughed. “Okay. Fair point.” She placed her hand in his. The moment their skin touched, Nicholas felt it again. That strange warmth beneath her pulse. Like sunlight flowing through human veins. Ancient instincts stirred uneasily in his chest. Danger. Temptation. Hope. He led her onto the small dance floor. As the music slowed, Macy found herself standing closer to him than she had ever imagined. His hand rested lightly on her waist. Her heartbeat thundered. “You never answered my question,” she said softly. “Which one?” “Why you’re helping me.” Nicholas looked down at her. Because you remind me what it feels like to be alive. Because your presence burns like sunlight in a world of endless night. Because I think I’m already losing control. But he simply said— “You’re talented.” Macy rolled her eyes. “That’s the polite answer.” “And the honest one.” She studied his expression. “You’re very mysterious, you know that?” “So I’ve been told.” She hesitated. Then asked the question that had been lingering in her mind. “Are you always watching me on set?” Nicholas didn’t deny it. “I like observing potential.” Her lips curved. “So I’m an investment?” His gaze softened. “You’re more than that.” The words lingered between them. Electric. Unspoken. And for one reckless moment, Macy thought he might kiss her. But suddenly— Nicholas froze. His entire body went rigid. His head snapped slightly toward the exit. Macy frowned. “What’s wrong?” Nicholas didn’t answer. Because far beyond the music, far beyond the laughter and glitter of the party— He felt something ancient stirring. A pulse of dark energy echoing through his senses. Cold. Familiar.
